It feels like Baker Mayfield was a Cleveland Browns quarterback ages ago.
In reality, it's been just three seasons. Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers for a fifth-round pick on July 6, 2022, almost four months after the Browns acquired Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson.

And the Cleveland Browns have never been the same since.
Watson has played in just 19 total games since arriving in Cleveland, while Mayfield has very quietly become a top-10 quarterback in the NFL. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2023 season, when he posted a career season with 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and a 64.3 completion percentage.
Mayfield bested that in 2024 with another career season, throwing for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, with a 71.4 completion percentage. He's also started all 34 games for the Bucs in two seasons.
An unnamed NFC personnel evaluator spoke with Matt Verderame of SI and seemingly took a shot at the Browns for the handling of Mayfield.

"I think Mayfield is proof of the concept of coaching matters, systems matter, team build matters," that evaluator said. "But more than anything, if you can process quickly and get the ball out on time from the pocket, you don't have to be 6-foot-5 to play (quarterback) in this league.
"He has become a professional quarterback as opposed to a college kid just running plays."
What might be worse for the Browns is that after $230 million, all guaranteed, the Watson era might be over after he suffered two Achilles injuries in October and January.
Or, maybe that's the best part of the Watson era for the Browns.

Aaron Judge puts on defensive clinic in Yankees' rout of Cubs

NEW YORK — It's no secret that Aaron Judge is more than just a hitter at this stage of his career, yet he reminded the Cubs of his defensive prowess in the Yankees' 11-0 win over the Cubs on Friday. Judge dazzled with a pair of plays in the fourth frame, first robbing Pete Crow-Armstrong of a home run for the second out of the inning. Judge, leaping near the corner in right field, had to work around a Yankees fan doing his best Jeffrey Maier impression, but he extended his glove hand over the wall and came away with a run-saving highlight. Advertisement Crow-Armstrong, one of baseball's best outfielders, could only wave off the play in disappointment as he rounded first base and returned to Chicago's bench. Judge then turned a Dansby Swanson line drive into another web gem on the next play. With the Cubs' shortstop smoking a Carlos Rodón heater 98.4 mph, Judge ran in and laid out for an inning-ending catch. That play had Rodón raising his arms in disbelief, as well as appreciation. Judge wasn't done, though, as another sensational catch ended the eighth with runners on the corners. This one required a long run toward the corner, but he managed to make another diving catch, stealing an RBI from Kyle Tucker as he slid into foul territory. Advertisement Once again, a smiling Rodón showed his love for Judge, waiting for the right fielder near the Yankees dugout after recording his last out of the evening. While Judge is known for his bat, he's no stranger to making superb plays in the field. His defensive rep took a bit of a hit last season, as a move to center, done to accommodate Juan Soto, led to negative metrics across the board. Then came Judge's infamous — and uncharacteristic — drop in Game 5 of the World Series. This year, however, Judge is back in right and posting positive numbers once again. He entered Friday's game with three defensive runs saved, two Outs Above Average and a Fielding Run Value of five. Advertisement Judge ranked seventh, seventh and second among 14 qualified right fielders in those respective categories. Of course, Judge's bat has stolen the show this season more than his defense. With an 0-for-2, two-walk, two-strikeout performance on Friday — he drove in the game's first run with a third-inning sac fly — the All-Star is now hitting .354 with a 1.187 OPS, 34 home runs and 79 RBIs this season.

Texas' recruiting struggles could end tonight—will a four-star choose the Longhorns or South Carolina?

Texas' recruiting struggles could end tonight—will a four-star choose the Longhorns or South Carolina? originally appeared on A to Z Sports. Hough (N.C.) cornerback Samari Matthews will decide Friday between Texas, South Carolina, Florida State, and Miami on YouTube. As of this writing, recruiting analysts are predicting the Longhorns to receive good news. But things could potentially shift as the time to commit approaches. Advertisement Matthews is the the No. 70 overall prospect, the No. 9 cornerback, and the No. 6 recruit in the state of North Carolina, per Rivals' Industry Ranking. The 6-foot, 180 pound recruit was rarely tested in his junior season, finishing with 19 tackles and two interceptions. 247Sports' scouting analyst Clint Brewster evaluated Matthew in-person earlier this summer. The takeaways were eye-opening. Matthews qualifies as one of the top-tier cornerbacks in the class as a complete player that's checked boxes in terms of physical ability and testing metrics. Adequate height/weight/speed with ability to shell and mirror in both man coverage of zone situations. Stays lockstep both underneath and over the top with quick-reacting traits and physicality through contested catches. Pattern match skills that translates to the next level. Very technically sound and can read, drive, and finish. The type of cornerback that can matchup against bigger wide outs and hold his own. Doesn't get much action his way to show off ball skills and athleticism when the football is in the air. Projects as a Day-2 draft pick with multi-year starter potential for a an elite college team. - Clint Brewster, 247Sports View the original article to see embedded media. South Carolina is the biggest threat to Texas heading into Samari Matthews' announcement. On3's Wes Mitchell, South Carolina recruiting analyst, gave his thoughts on the head-to-head matchup this week. With the caveat that things can always change in recruiting, my expectation is that Cornelius (N.C.) Hough four-star cornerback Samari Matthews will pick Texas on Friday. It's gone, at least from the info I've gathered, from being something I thought was at least a possibility to being the expectation. While Texas did enter the game later than other schools that were in the mix, cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey was heavily involved with Matthews when he was at Rutgers, so there was a long-standing relationship here that predated the Longhorns officially getting involved. - Wes Mitchell, On3 The Longhorns only have two defensive back commits in the 2026 class so this one is big. Matthews is predicted by most to pick Texas this evening, but this commitment could go a lot further than just a checkmark in the commitment column. The recent struggles on the trail won't seem as bad if the talented prospect says "hook 'em" before the weekend starts.
