UFC in Abu Dhabi: Reinier de Ridder edges Robert Whittaker in five-round thriller

The Dutch Knight, Reinier de Ridder, pulled off the biggest victory of his UFC career on Saturday night, narrowly edging out former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker via split decision in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi at Etihad Arena. In a closely contested five-round battle fought, de Ridder (now, 21-2) outlasted the Australian veteran despite suffering a knockdown in round three. Two of the three judges scored the bout 48-47 in favor of the Dutchman, with the third siding 48-47 with Whittaker (now, 27-9). 'I don't want to fight like this [again], man, this guy was too tough,' de Ridder said in his post-fight interview from the Octabon. 'I expected to take him down. He was so tough, so durable. Heavy *expletive* hands.' De Ridder, who came into the fight ranked 13th in the UFC middleweight division, had to survive a dangerous moment early in the third round when Whittaker dropped him with a clean right hand to the chin. Despite the scare, de Ridder recovered, scoring in the championship rounds with control. For Whittaker, it marks a second consecutive loss and his third defeat in his last five fights, putting the former champion at a critical juncture in his career. At 34, the Australian remains a top-tier talent but has struggled to re-establish himself as the division's elite since losing his belt to Israel Adesanya in 2019. Other Highlights from UFC Abu Dhabi Petr Yan dominates co-main event Former bantamweight champion Petr Yan returned to winning ways with a unanimous decision victory over Marcus McGhee. Yan controlled the bout from start to finish, outlanding McGhee in total strikes, significant strikes, and takedowns, and reaffirming his status as a contender in the stacked 135-pound division. Shara Magomedov gets back on track In another middleweight bout, Shara 'Bullet' Magomedov bounced back from his first professional defeat, suffered at the hands of Michael Page earlier this year in February, with a unanimous decision win over Marc-Andre Barriault. The two fighters went the distance, throwing significant strikes at each other, earning the fight of the night bonus. Steven Nguyen makes history as Emirati fighter leaves critically injured Earlier on the UFC Abu Dhabi prelims, Steven Nguyen delivered a record-setting performance – and a tough homecoming for UAE's own Mohammad Yahya. Nguyen (10-2) dropped Yahya (12-5) a staggering six times across two rounds, setting a new UFC record before the fight was stopped due to a grotesquely swollen eye at the end of Round 2. Fighting out of Fortis MMA, Nguyen earned his first UFC win in emphatic fashion. The doctor waved off the bout before Round 3, as the arena gasped at the sight of Yahya's badly distorted face on the big screen. It was a gritty showing from Yahya, but after back-to-back losses in the UFC, his future with the promotion now hangs in the balance. UFC to return to Abu Dhabi in October It was a packed night at Etihad Arena as thousands tuned in to watch the popular promotion which also had the likes of Islam Makhachev and Shavkat Rakhmanov in attendance. UFC is slated to return to the UAE capital on October 26 for UFC 321: Aspinall vs Gane, another exciting bout for the Heavyweight title.

Asia Cup cricket tournament to be held in UAE from Sept.9-28

The men's Asia Cup cricket tournament will be played in the UAE from Sept.9-28, a top official of the Asian Cricket Council said on Saturday. "I am delighted to confirm the dates for the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 in UAE,' ACC president Mohsin Naqvi wrote on X. "We look forward to a spectacular display of cricket! Detailed Schedule will be out soon.' Five full members of the ACC — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, official host India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka — along with UAE, Oman and Hong Kong will participate in the Twenty20 event. India is the official host but the tournament is being held at a neutral venue for rivals India and Pakistan. Naqvi, who is also chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, led an ACC annual general meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Thursday, but didn't confirm the dates after the meeting. According to reports, eight teams will compete: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, UAE, and Oman. A total of 19 matches will be played, with the final scheduled for 28 September. The tournament will follow the T20 format. Pakistan and India are expected to be in the same group, which could lead to three possible encounters—one in the group stage, one in the Super Four, and potentially a third in the final. Agencies

Reinier de Ridder's stocks continue to rise after UFC Fight Night win over Robert Whittaker

Reinier de Ridder rounded off a tough but amazing year with a hard-fought victory over Robert Whittaker to stay on course for a shot at the UFC middleweight title. The Dutchman clinched a split decision over the fifth-ranked Australian and former middleweight champion in the headline contest in the UFC Fight Night at the Etihad Arena on Saturday. The result took De Ridder's record for the year to a perfect five, following his departure from One Championship. For Whittaker, it was his second successive defeat after a first-round submission by Khamzat Chimaev in Abu Dhabi last October. 'Give me a chance to fight for that strap,' De Ridder screamed from the octagon when he was declared the winner. Later appearing at the post-fight conference, De Ridder said he went for the finish as always but Whittaker 'was amazing, tough, durable and had heavy hands,' denying him a finish for the first time in five fights. Whittaker was on top of his game from the outset. He landed some clean combinations and moved faster to avoid De Ridder with a couple take down attempts to take the opening round. The Australian continued to use his speed and precision in the next but De Ridder hit back with a few strikes and high knees, eventually finishing the round with a successful takedown. 'I don't really remember too much of those moments but I think I was in trouble a little bit at the start,' De Ridder acknowledged. 'I got to watch this (video replay) back. I think I got on top at least in the last two rounds, and maybe, the second as well. I hurt him a couple times with the knee, but this guy, he was hard to put away. 'Think I said it a couple times already, but one of the best Robs I've seen in years. He was so calm, collected, very explosive.' De Ridder said he settled down well as the fight progressed and was able to see where Whittaker's punches were coming from. 'I rushed a little bit in the beginning and he's just very quick, very fast,' he said. 'Then I found at a certain point that he had a very hard time hitting me if I was just in control. 'If I could see what he was throwing it was hard for him to get me. If I was just aware where my hands were and then I could hit him with the jab a little bit.' De Ridder secured a 48-47 decision from two judges, while the third gave the contest to Whittaker 48-47. De Ridder can now legitimately aim higher. The middleweight division in the UFC is packed with potential challengers to South African Dricus du Plessis's belt. De Ridder feels there is a lot going on over the next few months, making it difficult to think of his next opponent. 'I want to prove that I'm the best. I want to get back into gym and on all that happened in this fight. But first I need some relaxation for a couple weeks.' Having appeared in five fights in exactly a year, De Ridder will take a well-earned break. 'I see myself laying on the beach eating biscuits and beef ribs, playing with my kids,' he said of his recovery plans. 'Relaxing for a couple weeks and then we'll see. But see what happens. There's a lot going on in the middleweight division in the next couple of weeks.' De Ridder, 34, has emerged as one of the rising stars in UFC after recording wins over Gerald Meerschaert, Kevin Holland and Bo Nickal, all without going the distance following his sole appearance in the UAE Warriors exactly a year ago. He stopped Russian Magomedmurad Khasaev with a first-round TKO in the Abu Dhabi promotion after a highly publicised falling out with One Championship, an organisation where he was a double world champion. De Ridder is ever grateful for Abu Dhabi's role in clearing him from the legal battle with his former promotion. He has now completed the journey with the win over Whittaker in the capital city. 'Habibi. Abu Dhabi. Shukran. I love you guys,' he said of the platform provided by the UAE Warriors that eventually paved the way for his rise in the UFC. 'I'm a top five fighter in the world, I guess. That's crazy. Who can believe it? And in one year, by the way. I think I have a good chance fighting for the title someday soon,' he said. 'The winning formula is hard work, and I've been in so much work. Sometimes, some weeks, I'm surprised my body still keeps up, but I'm still here. I'm still standing. 'Give me a little bit of time to recover and I'm back in the gym and trying to get even better.' Petr Yan, the former bantam weight champion, also stayed on course to regain his belt after a unanimous decision over Marcus McGhee. Shara Magomedov gave the audience their money's worth when he outclassed Canadian Marc-Andre Barriault by unanimous decision in a middleweight bout.
