Dame Helen Mirren has one major rule to keep looking youthful ahead of 80th
The acclaimed actress Dame Helen Mirren says a little bit of adventure is ideal as long as its in moderation
Dame Helen Mirren has revealed her best tip for youngsters to stay looking young - don't smoke and try everything.
The acclaimed actress will turn 80 next month but looks much younger than her advancing years. Asked for advice she said: 'Don't smoke, that's rule number one and do everything but don't do too much of anything. That's a great way of looking at things, because it's important to take care of your health, but you also don't want to live like a nun.'
Dame Helen, who won an Oscar for Elizabeth II one of a number of royals she has played, says she will never get used to being a star and has a lack of ego. She explained: 'It always surprises me when someone comes up to me in a supermarket or an airport and says that they think I'm great, but it's lovely. This sort of thing is fun. It's fabulous. It's fantastic. It doesn't feel right to say that I'm proud of being a role model to people, but it's a great feeling.'
Dame Helen also says she has always been a make up fan and still enjoys spending hours putting it on as one of life's pleasures.
Speaking to Grazia magazine, as part of of her role as a L'Oreal ambassador, she said: 'My idea of a treat is going into a drug store and buying myself another lip liner. I sit at my little desk at home and can spend hours putting my makeup on. It's something I've always loved to do.
'It's not that I don't like trying new products. The innovation is amazing, but it's heartbreaking when you hit on a foundational mascara that you love, the golden chalice, only to find that a few years later that has been discontinued.'
She takes her role so seriously as an ambassador that she even took a box of their hair dye home with her to try out herself before promoting it.
Confirming the rumour she said: 'That's the point of the whole thing, isn't it? I wanted to do it myself, to genuinely be Able to tell people it's a great product, which it is."
Dame Helen also praised a new L'Oreal initiative promoting women in the film industry.
Looking back over her career, which began on stage at The Old Vic playing Cleopatra aged 20, she said: 'When I arrived on the scene as an actress, I'd step onto set and there would be 150 men and three women, almost exclusively, working in the costume and hair and makeup departments.
"Now, when I walk onto a film set, maybe a quarter of the people there are women, and I'm talking about women directors, cinematographers, women in the sound department, in the electrical department. It's moving.
We will next see Dame Helen on screen in Netflix 's film version of the Richard Osman book The Thursday Murder Club, where she is playing retirement village sleuth Elizabeth Best. It is released on August 28.

Disney holds ‘crisis talks' after Jared Leto sexual misconduct report threatens to derail release of movie Tron: Ares
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DISNEY has found itself scrambling to organize the promotion of Jared Leto's new movie amid historic claims of sexual impropriety, an insider has exclusively told The U.S. Sun. Leto, 53, has been accused by nine women, including some who were teenagers at the time. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 4 Jared Leto speaks on stage about Disney's Tron: Ares during CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas on April 3, 2025 Credit: AFP 4 The Oscar-winning actor is the lead in the movie, scheduled for an October release, and is also one of the producers Credit: YouTube/ONE Media Model Laura La Rue was among the accusers who said she was just 16 when the star, then 36, began flirting through messages and once emerged from a room at his house naked, according to a damming Air Mail report in early June. Recalling the alleged experience at his house, she said, "I thought maybe this was just what adult men do." Leto's reps denied any wrongdoing, saying, "Their communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms La Rue later applied to work as his personal assistant." La Rue denied she ever applied for the job, according to AirMail. He is not being sued or charged with any crime, but the report has thrown a wrench in the works when it comes to promoting his latest films. The Oscar-winning actor has two big-budget films being released in the coming months at Disney and Amazon MGM, Tron: Ares and Masters of the Universe. Ahead of Tron's release in October, Disney is scheduled to host a panel at San Diego ComicCon at the end of July, The Wrap reported, although it's not known whether or not Leto will appear on it. "Jared wants it to be business as usual ahead of the release of his new movie, but Disney is nervous about the promotion of Tron," an insider exclusively told The U.S. Sun. "The accusations of sexual misconduct couldn't have come at a worse time. "The marketing team has been having crisis meetings ahead of its theatrical release in October. Jared Leto shows off bold change to his appearance at MTV VMAs - as fans think he looks just like Kanye West's ex "Disney is planning to host a panel at San Diego ComicCon to push Tron: Ares and Jared has made it known that he's happy to be on it. "He doesn't want to hide away having denied the allegations and not only is he the lead, he's one of the producers. "Talks are still ongoing about how to handle the situation, but he will likely take part in some capacity and hold his head high. "He is not being sued civilly and he isn't being charged with a crime, if he were I think things would be a lot different." Disney may still have to cut its losses on this one." An insider told The U.S. Sun Leto took to the stage to speak about Tron: Ares during CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas on April 3, 2025, just two months before the report was published by AirMail. One woman speaking to the outlet claimed his behavior "has been an open secret for a long time." The U.S. Sun's source added, "Disney may still have to cut its losses on this one but will still do what it can to promote the movie and create a buzz." Neither Disney nor a representative for Leto responded to a request for comment. San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 24 to 27. Tron is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 10. The movie also Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, and Jeff Bridges. And although a big-budget movie usually comes with TV and print interview slots for its lead star and a social media push, there has been no marketing since the initial trailer was released in April. Leto is also set to appear in Masters of the Universe, which is scheduled for release in June 2026, although he is not the lead character in the live-action feature film. The actor has been cast as Skeletor, the primary antagonist to Nicholas Galitzine's He-Man, according to reports. Leto is also the frontman of the rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars, which is on tour until the end of the summer. He has played major roles in several movies, including The Joker in Suicide Squad, and won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Dallas Buyers Club. 4 Fans got to see the trailer for Tron: Ares, which was screened at The Walt Disney Studios presentation during CinemaCon in Las Vegas Credit: Getty

"After all, he had put £1million into the club which no one knew about at the time or even since. "I was raising £50million in 2004 and Sean asked if he could invest. "I told him that it was football, that there were no guarantees and he should get professional advice but he was adamant - he wanted in."

Powerful and moving Oscar-nominated war film 'best ever' fans have seen
Tangerines, the Estonian-Georgian film has been lauded for its powerful portrayal of anti-war sentiment, which has resonated with audiences and critics alike The critically acclaimed Tangerines has been praised for delivering a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on the subject of war, earning commendation for its staunch anti-war message on the silver screen. The film is a product of Zaza Urushadze's cinematic vision, serving as the producer, scribe, and director of this 2013 Estonian-Georgian collaborative effort, which skilfully tackles the challenging topics of conflict, reconciliation, and the aspiration for peace. Set against the backdrop of the 1992–1993 Abkhazian conflict, Tangerines unfolds in the year 1992 within the war-torn landscapes of Abkhazia—a separatist region of Georgia—engulfed by the aftermath of hostilities. It chronicles the tale of Ivo, an Estonian tangerine farmer, who boldly chooses to remain amidst the chaos to tend to his orchard. Faced with the brutal realities of the surrounding violence, Ivo gives shelter to a stricken soldier left to fend for himself. Garnering international acclaim, Tangerines received an Oscar nomination at the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film — the first-ever Estonian production to achieve such prestigious acknowledgment. The film was further recognised with a nomination in the same category at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, reports the Mirror US. Shot amidst the striking scenery of Guria in Georgia, the cast features Lembit Ulfsak, Giorgi Nakashidze, Elmo Nüganen, and Mikheil (Misha) Meskhi in pivotal roles. Winning the hearts of moviegoers and critics alike with an impressive 88 per cent endorsement rate on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has garnered universally positive feedback from critics; one such praise reads: "It is tremendous storytelling: engaging, intelligent, and with some lovely touches." Another reviewer heaped accolades on the film, stating: "You'd find that in investing 87 minutes of your time for Tangerines, you had viewed not just a poignant anti-war film, but a beautifully realised cinematic parable." Meanwhile, a critic hailed Urushadze's work with high commendation: "Pitch-perfect performances and Urushadze's careful unwinding of the story ensure Tangerines is never less than riveting." On the topic of its profound resonance, a commentator remarked about Tangerines: "Although the subject of civil war within the former Soviet countries has been tackled in other movies, this retelling is one of the most concise and affecting." Likewise, feedback from audience members echoed the sentiment, as one described the anti-war piece as: "A gentle and delicate warning about death and life, wars and humanity! Beautiful filming and acting." Concurrently, an enthusiastic spectator expressed it was "outstanding", elaborating: "What a powerful film. This was one of the best films I've seen in a while. The message was outstanding. Deserves an applaud." Another individual insisted that the film rightly earned its Oscar nod, sharing: "Wonderfully acted and the cinematography is memorable. Compare the warmth and colour of the tangerine orchard with the bleakness of the land surrounding it. Oscar nominated, superbly acted. It is a striking anti-war film." One viewer expressed unexpected admiration for the film, saying: "Not just another war movie. The story feels real and human and far from the front lines yet deeply entrenched in the struggles. It surprised me to like this film so much."
