Oklahoma Sooners among top 3 for 2026 4-star linebacker from Texas
The Oklahoma Sooners have begun to make some headway on the defensive side of the ball in the 2026 recruiting class. Oklahoma earned their first defensive commitment in May in safety Niko Jandreau. And that was quickly followed by commitments from linebacker Jakore Smith and defensive lineman Brian Harris. Now, the Sooners may be closing in on another defensive standout.
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Oklahoma is among the top three for four-star linebacker DaQuives Beck out of Carthage, Texas. Beck is considered a top 10 linebacker in the 2026 cycle by ESPN and 247Sports and is a top 200 player in the 247Sports Composite and the On3 Industry Rankings.
Beck's top three includes Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M, and he holds offers from SEC schools like Texas, Ole Miss, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi State. He also has offers from Oregon, SMU, Baylor, TCU, Houston, and Texas Tech.
He's a versatile linebacker who would be a fantastic fit as the cheetah in Brent Venables' defense. Beck shows the ability to line up along the line of scrimmage and set the edge in the run game. He's physical at the point of attack and has the strength to hold up offensive tackles in the run game. He's got a great first step off the edge that often leaves him getting into the backfield unblocked. Beck displays a great motor, chasing down ball carriers when the play runs the opposite way. He can also line up as an off-ball linebacker and shows the awareness to diagnose the play and track down the ball carrier. Beck plays with good speed and athleticism and shows the ability to drop and play in coverage.
The Sooners will have a significant recruiting battle on their hands to win Beck's services but it appears they're in great shape to add one of the best linebackers in the 2026 recruiting class.

Notre Dame 2027 QB target Teddy Jarrard will commit later this week on July 24th
It was announced last week by 2027 Georgia quarterback Teddy Jarrard that he has narrowed down his list to just five schools with Notre Dame making the cut. The Irish won't have to wait long to find out if they'll add the 6-foot, 3-inch and 200-pounders to their 2027 class, as on Monday he announced that he will be making his commitment just a few days from now, on July 24th. The other four teams Jarrard is considering are Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State, as he is looking to shut down the process early. It worked out well for Notre Dame at their 2026 quarterback commit Noah Grubbs, who also opted to end his recruitment extremely early. There is more than enough positive momentum for the Irish, as there has been a few insiders that believe the Blue and Gold will win out for Jarrard. Jarrard has done extremely well during the camp circuit this spring and summer, and has made a jump in recruiting rankings since then. He's currently the No. 195 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite, and would be a great addition to Notre Dame's 2027 recruiting class. John Mateer builds game by watching OU football greats Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray
ATLANTA — John Mateer didn't grow up rooting much for a specific school. But OU football's new starting quarterback, who grew up in the Dallas area, watched and rooted for specific quarterbacks. Former TCU star Trevone Boykin, who starred for the Horned Frogs from 2012-15, was at the top of that list. There are plenty of others, though. 'Lamar (Jackson), Baker (Mayfield), Kyler (Murray),' Mateer said Wednesday at SEC media days. 'There's a lot. Max Duggan, I liked him a little bit because some people said I was a little like him, just the way he plays — so tough. There's more but there's a lot. I like to take little things from everybody's game.' There are plenty of standout names on that list, but certainly Mayfield and Murray are the two that stand out most to OU fans. So what did Mateer take from each? First up, Mayfield, who threw for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns in 2017. 'I think Baker's toughness is just something that every quarterback needs to have,' Mateer said. 'I feel like if you're not giving everything you have then why should your other teammates when you're supposed to be the leader. So you've got to do it and he's so good. I go back and watch highlights because they're just fun to watch.' And what has Mateer taken from watching Murray, who threw for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns and ran for 1,001 yards and 12 scores in his Heisman season? 'When Kyler played I just felt like he was running,' Mateer said. 'He was outrunning everybody every play and I'd love to do that. I'm not quite that fast, but something like that would be awesome.' Mateer showed plenty of quickness last season, when he ran for 826 yards and 15 scores to go along with 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns through the air. OU football announces details for Meet the Sooners Day
NORMAN — OU football's annual Meet the Sooners Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The event begins at 1 p.m. and last 90 minutes. This year's Meet the Sooners Day is available only to 1Oklahoma members (age 13 and older) or OG&E Sooner Kids Club members (age 12 and younger. Sooner Kids Club members must be accompanied by an adult. Subscriptions to 1Oklahoma can be purchased on the collective's website. Sooner Kids Club memberships are available for $50 annually. The club includes access to other exclusive experiences and admission to several home OU sporting events. Representatives from both groups will be at the even to assist with new subscriptions and memberships. Screenshots will not be valid for entry. Attendees will enter at Gate 5 in the northwest corner of the stadium and regular game day metal-detector and clear-bag policies remain in effect. Schedule posters will be available for free to have autographed and fans may also bring on other item to have signed during the event. Only water will be available for purchase at the event, though fans can bring their own food and bottled water. Cool-zone areas will also be available. Fans can park in the Asp Avenue Parking Facility and Jenkins Avenue Parking Facility (southwest of Lindsey and Jenkins), as well as the Duck Pond lot east of the stadium. The Sooner Shop on the bottom level of the Asp Avenue Parking Facility on the stadium's west side will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the day of the event. Ticketing representatives will be available near Gate 5. OU opens its season Aug. 30 against Illinois State.
