The Star10-06-2025

GEORGE TOWN: The Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang will commence physical construction within the next two months, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
"We have now resolved all issues related to the Penang LRT project.
"This includes discussions between the Transport Ministry and the state government.
"I have personally chaired a meeting with the Penang Chief Minister at the Transport Ministry last month," he said after inspecting the Rapid Penang On-Demand (ROD) service here on Tuesday (June 10).
The 29.5km Mutiara Line LRT project, with its 21 stations, connects the island and mainland of Penang.
Loke stated that the issues resolved included obtaining consent letters from the state government and addressing technical problems.
He said that the main contractor for the project has already assigned preliminary work to the subcontractors involved, in readiness for on-site activities.
"We can expect to see physical works begin in the next one or two months," he said.
Meanwhile, since its introduction in phases from August 2024 to May 2025, the ROD service has been operating with 50 vans, covering 13 zones in Penang: seven zones on the island and six zones in Seberang Perai.
The average number of daily passengers on weekdays has increased since the addition of zones, which began in March 2025, with an average of 492 passengers per day compared to 159 passengers in February.
With an average daily ridership exceeding the target of 1,944 in May, it has contributed approximately 4.1% of the total daily average of 47,000 passengers using Rapid Penang services.

The Gurney-Tanjong Bungah route was the most popular, with 522 passengers daily.

Rapid KL On-Demand service expands to KL CBD and education zones

KUALA LUMPUR: Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd will expand its Rapid KL On-Demand service to four high-demand zones starting Monday, targeting Kuala Lumpur's city centre and major education hubs. The new zones aim to improve urban mobility and ease congestion in key areas. The expanded service covers the Kuala Lumpur Central Business District (CBD), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) MRT-IOI City Mall, Kelana Jaya LRT-Taman SEA/Damansara Jaya, and Gombak LRT-Taman Selaseh/International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Nine vans will operate in the CBD zone, serving high-traffic areas like Jalan Imbi, Jalan Sultan Ismail, and Jalan Raja Chulan. 'With heavy traffic congestion and limited parking in the CBD, this service offers a user-friendly micro-mobility solution and supports efforts to transform Kuala Lumpur into a transit-oriented city,' Rapid Bus said in a statement. Beyond the city centre, the service will cater to students and staff at UPM, IIUM, and nearby schools, providing safer and more flexible transport options. Prasarana Malaysia Berhad group chief operating officer (Operations) Amir Hamdan said the expansion aligns with efforts to create an inclusive and responsive public transport system. 'Our city centre zone tackles first/last-mile issues, while education zones focus on student commuting needs,' he said. The Rapid KL On-Demand service guarantees reserved seats and operates daily from 6 am to 11.30 pm via the Rapid On-Demand app. The promotional fare of RM1 per trip remains, with payment options including Touch 'n Go, MyRapid Concession Cards, and unlimited travel passes. Full deployment of 300 vans is expected by early July 2025. For details, visit

My50 pass goes digital via TNG eWallet from July 1

KUALA LUMPUR: The My50 unlimited travel pass will transition to a digital renewal system via the Touch 'n Go (TNG) eWallet app starting July 1, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today. The new digital process allows users to renew their monthly passes using an NFC-enabled TNG card, removing the need for physical MyKad verification or queuing at Rapid KL counters. Loke highlighted that the current manual renewal system takes approximately three minutes per customer, often leading to long queues at busy stations. 'Users can verify their Malaysian citizenship through the e-KYC feature in the TNG eWallet app and renew their My50 pass seamlessly. No MyKad is required,' he said during the My50 Pass Digitalisation Briefing and Launch at KL Sentral LRT Station. The digitalisation project, developed at a cost of RM2.75 million over six months, aims to streamline the renewal process. While counter renewals with MyKad remain an option, the eWallet method is expected to reduce congestion significantly. 'TNG was selected due to its extensive payment network and existing e-KYC infrastructure, which covers over 24 million Malaysians,' Loke added. By year-end, the TNG eWallet will introduce a feature enabling users to track their My50 usage and monthly savings, aiding financial planning. The initiative will also extend to other travel passes, including MyCity and MyTourist, as part of broader efforts to digitalise public transport services. Loke emphasised that seamless ticketing systems are crucial for delivering efficient public transport, aligning with Kuala Lumpur's 2040 urban mobility goals. He encouraged operators to adopt emerging technologies like AI to enhance user convenience.

My50 unlimited travel pass goes digital starting July 1

By FARAH SOLHI MALAYSIANS can subscribe to Prasarana's My50 unlimited travel pass online now through Touch 'n Go e-wallet starting July 1 using their Touch 'n Go card that is equipped with an NFC chip. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said that this feature will allow users to renew their pass at their convenience, instead of having to queue for two to three minutes at the counter. 'This digitalisation move is part of the government's ongoing efforts, together with Prasarana, to improve the convenience and public transport users' experience in the country. 'It is in line with the aspiration of digitalising the country's public transport services (in pursuit of) cashless consumption,' he said when officiating the features at a press briefing in KL Sentral today. Despite digitalisation, Loke said those who wish to remain renewing the pass using existing methods by queueing and renewing at Prasarana's ticketing counter, can still do so. He further said that this upgrade is equipped with safety features, given that the My50 passes are only limited to Malaysians. 'Those who wish to renew their pass through Touch 'n Go e-wallet still have to go through the e-KYC process when they want to activate and link their card to the application. 'In few more months, Prasarana and Touch 'n Go will also be introducing a feature where users can track their usage, allowing them to see which stations their card has been tapped in. 'This is to allow users to monitor their pass usage and travels, so that they get to grasp how much they are saving by subscribing to this monthly pass,' he said. Loke added that the travel-tracking features data would only be accessible to users individually as it will be recorded in their personal profile feature in the e-wallet. Public transport, he said, is not just about providing an adequate number of trains or busses but also supporting facilities such as ticketing systems is an important element in providing world-class public transport facilities 'All planning and development of new cities must take into account mobility facilities including an integrated public transport system, adequate and comprehensive pedestrian infrastructure and bus stops. '(Apart from this feature) Prasarana is also looking to expand the digitalisation initiative to other products such as MyCity and MyTourist passes. 'This aims to increase ease of access, reduce dependence on cash transactions and provide a convenient and fast travel experience,' he said. The My50 unlimited travel pass was introduced on December 1, 2018, as part of the then government to promote cashless society.
