HL: ‘Don't fall into BJP's trap': SP starts Pasmanda outreach for 2027 polls
Comprising the socially, educationally and economically backward groups among the Muslims, the Pasmandas constitute a large majority of the community.
An SP leader estimated that around 85% of Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, across 48 castes, are from Pasmanda groups. The remaining 15% are upper-caste Muslims from the Sheikh, Syed, Mughal and Pathan communities. The SP counts Muslims as among its big vote banks in UP.
The design and the structure of SP's drive was formulated at a meeting of party president Akhilesh Yadav and Pasmanda Samaj leaders earlier this month, a day after the Samjawadi Alpsankhyak Sabha, the minority wing of the party, held a meeting.
As part of the drive, SP sources said, the party will first hold meetings with members of the Pasmanda Muslim community in all 403 Assembly constituencies of the state. This will be followed by district-level conventions, culminating in a state-level public meeting in the run-up to the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
SP national secretary Anis Mansoori, who is also the president of the Pasmanda Muslim Samaj, an umbrella organisation of the community, told The Indian Express that the SP would truly 'empower' the group.
'In these meetings and conventions (as part of the drive), we will convince the Pasmanda community that they should not fall into the BJP's trap. The BJP shows concern for the community only for votes… It (the BJP) does nothing for their empowerment. The Pasmanda community will be part of the SP's organisation and government when the party comes to power in the state,' Mansoori said.
Mansoori added that the BJP's Pasmanda outreach efforts were meant to divide the Muslim vote, hence hurting the SP. 'Our apprehension is that if Pasmandas vote for the BJP, it will cut off a major chunk of Muslims. Muslims and Yadavs are the SP's core voters… Akhilesh ji has assured us that all the problems of the Pasmanda community will be addressed if the SP comes to power,' he said.
The SP is framing the outreach as part of its PDA (Pichchda, Dalit and alpsankhyak) formula. A press release after the meeting with Pasmanda leaders said the SP would give the community 'political honour'.
The BJP has been trying to make inroads into the Pasmanda community since 2022. At his speech at a BJP national executive conclave held in Hyderabad in July that year, Modi asked the party to reach out to 'deprived and downtrodden' sections in all communities. According to UP BJP insiders, its calculations showed that an estimated 8% of voters from the community favoured the party in the Assembly polls that year, even though the SP had a strong alliance with other OBC-based regional parties.
Since then, Pasmanda Muslims have been the subject of several BJP outreach initiatives, from sammelans and sneh yatras to meetings with intellectuals.
Reacting on the SP's campaign, UP BJP's minority wing state president Kunvar Basit Ali said: 'The SP is afraid of the BJP's efforts to get Muslim votes. Muslims are supporting the BJP now for their development and growth.'

Tripura Chief Minister To Expand Cabinet Tomorrow: Report
Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha would expand his council of ministers on July 3, sources said on Wednesday. Sources said that on the advice of the Chief Minister, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu would administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new minister at the Raj Bhavan. One probable name -- Kishore Barman -- is doing the rounds about the possible minister. BJP MLA Barman was elected in the 2023 Assembly polls from Nalchar constituency in Sepahijala district. As per the constitutional mandate, the size of the council of ministers is 12, including the Chief Minister. One ministerial berth has been lying vacant. The sources said that at least five BJP MLAs are the contenders for the ministerial berths. On March 8, 2023, the BJP and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) coalition government led by Saha came to power for the second consecutive term. The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), headed by former royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, contested the 2023 Assembly polls separately but in March last year, after signing a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government, joined the BJP-IPFT coalition government, adding a new twist to Tripura politics. Accordingly, two TMP MLAs -- Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma -- were inducted into the ministry. The IPFT currently has one minister -- Sukla Charan Noatia -- in the 11-member council of the ministry. The BJP-IPFT alliance had retained power in Tripura by winning 33 seats in the 60-member Assembly. The TMP, which contested the Assembly elections in 2023 for the first time, won 13 seats of the 42 seats it contested, emerging as the second largest party after the BJP. The CPI-M won 11 seats in the elections while the Congress bagged three. The CPI-M-led Left Front and the Congress had a seat-sharing arrangement for the elections. The TMP became a political force in April 2021 after it wrested power in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. The politically important TTAADC has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura's 10,491 sq km area, and is home to over 1,21,6000 people, of which around 84 per cent are tribals.

Speeding SUV crashes into house injuring residents
Lucknow: A speeding SUV, allegedly with a BJP block chief sticker and an Uttarakhand number plate, rammed into a house in Santguru Ravidas Nagar late Tuesday leaving two residents injured and triggering a political row. The vehicle ploughed through a shop front and boundary wall around 1:50 am, crashing into the living quarters of Vijay and his wife, Gyanmati. The couple's shop and household items were severely damaged while Vijay and their son, Deepak, suffered minor injuries. The vehicle also hit and injured one of its passengers, but the remaining three occupants, including a woman, fled the scene, said police. The incident took place under the Hazratganj police station limits. SHO Vikram Singh said an FIR was registered based on a written complaint from Gyanmati. The vehicle was seized, and legal action is underway under BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 125(b) (causing damage), and 324(5) (causing hurt by dangerous means). "Four people, including the driver, have been booked," he added. Police also recovered liquor bottles and other intoxicants from the SUV. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was being driven recklessly at high speed. "There were three men and a woman inside the vehicle. All appeared intoxicated. One remained inside the vehicle with injuries while others managed to escape," a senior officer at the scene said. The Congress party accused the BJP of promoting a culture of impunity. "Beer bottles on the dashboard, drunk BJP men fleeing after wrecking a house—this is the true face of the ruling party," the UP Congress posted on X.
