Common sweeteners found in foods and drinks may significantly increase the risk of early puberty in children, new research shows.
The findings come from a large-scale study that was presented on today at ENDO 2025, the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in San Francisco.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 1,400 adolescents and found a strong link between sweetener consumption and central precocious puberty, a condition where puberty begins unusually early—typically before age eight in girls and nine in boys.
Central precocious puberty is becoming more common worldwide and can have lasting health consequences, including emotional challenges, shorter adult height and an increased risk of reproductive and metabolic disorders later in life.

"This study is one of the first to connect modern dietary habits—specifically sweetener intake—with both genetic factors and early puberty development in a large, real-world cohort," said Yang-Ching Chen, M.D., Ph.D., of Taipei Municipal Wan Fang Hospital and Taipei Medical University in Taipei, Taiwan.
The study, part of the ongoing Taiwan Pubertal Longitudinal Study (TPLS) launched in 2018, analyzed data on 1,407 adolescents, of whom 481 were diagnosed with central precocious puberty.
Researchers assessed dietary intake using questionnaires and urine testing and measured genetic risk using polygenic risk scores based on 19 genes related to early puberty.
The study revealed gender-specific effects of common sweeteners, which include aspartame, sucralose, glycyrrhizin (a compound found in licorice) and added sugars.
In girls, consumption of glycyrrhizin, sucralose and added sugars was linked to a higher risk of central precocious puberty.
In boys, sucralose stood out as the most significant sweetener associated with early puberty onset.
These sweeteners are commonly found in a wide range of everyday foods and drinks, including diet sodas, flavored yogurts, sugar-free gums, protein bars, cereals and even some children's medications.
Researchers also found a dose-response relationship: the more sweeteners consumed, the higher the risk.
The findings build on Chen's earlier work, which showed that sweeteners can disrupt hormonal regulation and gut microbiota balance.
For instance, acesulfame potassium (AceK), another common artificial sweetener, was previously shown to activate brain cell receptors involved in "sweet taste" pathways, increasing the release of puberty-related hormones and stress molecules.
Glycyrrhizin was also found to alter gut bacteria and suppress key genes that regulate puberty timing.
"This suggests that what children eat and drink, especially products with sweeteners, may have a surprising and powerful impact on their development," Chen said.
The findings could have far-reaching implications for dietary guidelines and pediatric care.
Chen emphasized that monitoring sweetener intake and considering a child's genetic predisposition may be critical in preventing early puberty and its associated long-term health risks.
"These results are directly relevant to families, pediatricians, and public health authorities," Chen said. "They suggest that screening for genetic risk and moderating sweetener intake could help prevent early puberty and its long-term health consequences."

Popular weight loss medications like Ozempic can help reverse low testosterone levels in men with obesity or Type 2 diabetes, according to new research. Building on previous studies that show weight loss surgery or lifestyle changes can increase testosterone levels in the body, researchers at SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital analyzed the electronic health records of 110 men with obesity or Type 2 diabetes to monitor changes in the hormone while taking GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semgalutide and tirzepatide. They measured testosterone levels before taking the medications and for 18 months after starting the treatment. Roughly half of the men had low to low-normal testosterone at the start of the study and most reached normal levels after treatment. The mean age of the participants was 54. 'The increases we observed were more modest than what you would typically see with testosterone replacement therapy,' said lead author Dr. Shellsea Portillo Canales, endocrinologist at SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital, via email. 'However, they occurred naturally, without testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), and likely reflect the body recovering its normal hormone production as weight and insulin resistance improved.' The study highlights the need for men already on testosterone therapies to closely monitor their levels after starting weight loss medications, Portillo said. In some cases, men may need to have their testosterone supplement doses lowered or discontinued, especially if their testosterone normalizes while on weight loss medications. There are limitations to the new study. The findings don't prove the increase in testosterone levels was caused by the drugs semaglutide or tirzepatide. It was a retrospective study, meaning the researchers analyzed existing medical records over time, rather than conducting a randomized clinical trial. And they didn't check testosterone levels after the men stopped the drugs. 'If weight is regained, testosterone levels could potentially drop again,' Portillo said. The study findings were presented this Monday at ENDO 2025, the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in San Francisco. The researchers are planning to submit it to a medical journal for peer review. Dr. Susan Spratt, professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine, said many men are overtreated with testosterone therapy when they have levels on the lower normal side. 'It would be better to treat obesity or diabetes and naturally increase testosterone than to prescribe testosterone — which has known risks,' said Spratt, who was not part of the study. Some risks of testosterone therapy include worsening sleep apnea, acne, enlarging the prostate or breasts, increasing growth of prostate cancer, reducing sperm counts, causing the testicles to shrink and increasing the risk of clots, according to Mayo Clinic. The study shows the dual benefit of weight loss medications in men, said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, obesity medicine physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. 'The findings from this study highlight an important intersection between metabolic health and hormonal balance,' Stanford said. 'This dual benefit underscores the potential of these medications to enhance overall health outcomes, including reproductive health, in this population.' Normal testosterone levels are between 300 to 1,000 nanograms per deciliter. Testosterone tends to decline gradually with age, starting around the late 30s to early 40s. By age 75, the average male testosterone level drops to about 65% of the average level seen in young adults, Portillo said. 'Improving testosterone can enhance quality of life and possibly reduce health risks associated with low levels,' Portillo said. Spratt said it's important to distinguish between normal testosterone levels that increase but remain in the normal range, versus low testosterone levels that increase to normal. Testosterone levels that are truly low are most concerning because low testosterone can lower bone density (which increases the risk of fracture), reduce muscle mass, lower hemoglobin (red blood cells) levels and decrease libido, experts say. 'However, treating low normal testosterone without a known cause is controversial and has increased in the past decade likely due to direct-to-consumer marketing,' Spratt said. The researchers only included men in the study, because they didn't expect weight loss drugs to raise testosterone levels in women. 'In general, we don't routinely measure testosterone in women, unless there are signs of a hormonal imbalance, like excess facial hair (hirsutism), irregular periods, infertility or signs of masculinization,' Portillo said. In those cases, testosterone testing can help diagnose conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, adrenal disorders or rare tumors. Some studies in women with PCOS, a condition which raises testosterone levels, suggest GLP-1 therapies may help slightly lower testosterone by improving metabolism and reducing insulin resistance. Certain conditions are well known to decrease testosterone in men, including excess fat, especially around the abdomen, which interferes with hormone signals from the brain to the testicle, experts say. The scientists working on the study transplanted some of the special brown fat to other mice that were not genetically modified and found that the normal mice responded within days, showing similar benefits. The body has two main types of fat, FYI: white fat (AKA the "bad" kind known to contribute to health issues) and brown fat, or brown adipose tissue (BAT). "Unlike white adipose tissue, which stores energy, BAT burns calories to generate heat—a process driven by its rich mitochondrial content and the presence of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1)," says Ingrid Yang, MD, a board-certified internal medicine physician and longevity science expert. "This thermogenic capability not only helps in temperature regulation but has also been linked to improved metabolic outcomes. Recent research has shown that BAT activation may enhance insulin sensitivity and protect against metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, which are key factors in age-related health decline," she says. While brown fat is not a new discovery, the study brings a new understanding of how brown fat works. "This is an exciting step forward," says Dr. Yang. "It illustrates that brown adipose tissue is more than just an energy-burning organ—it plays a pivotal role in enhancing exercise performance and metabolic resilience. This dual function could have significant implications for healthy aging." Related: Stephen Vatner, MD, who is one of the authors of the study and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at Rutgers University, noted that the study helped researchers show that brown fat could have the potential to increase exercise performance—something not many studies have found before. "There have been a lot of studies showing that exercise can affect brown fat, but fewer studies showing that brown fat can increase exercise performance, the major finding from this research article," he said. Something to note is that the study looked at a potent form of brown fat vs. normal brown fat, and the researchers discussed working to develop a pharmaceutical intervention that may mimic the potent brown fat they discovered. Dr. Yang cautions that there is still a lot to understand before something like this can be offered, so don't expect a "magic bullet" solution to boost brown fat anytime soon. "And while the study authors offer that the prospect of developing pharmaceutical analogs to activate BAT is exciting, we need a careful evaluation of the long-term safety and potential off-target effects. Enhancing BAT function could, for instance, affect overall energy balance in ways that we don't fully understand yet," she says. This study sheds more light on what we know about brown fat and how it could be a powerful for enhancing longevity. It's important to keep in mind that the study was performed on mice and may not directly translate to humans until we have more research to confirm the findings. "I would caution that while the results from this study are promising, it's important to note that findings in RGS14 knockout mice may not directly translate to humans. The rapid improvement in exercise capacity is intriguing, yet we must be cautious about overinterpreting these results until similar outcomes are observed in human studies," says Dr. Yang. Until we know more, you can incorporate some evidence-based methods for activating more brown fat tissue below, while focusing on the foundational tenets that we know are important for longevity and overall health, including: exercise, nutrition and sleep. Related: According to Dr. Yang, there are several evidence-based ways to help "activate" or convert some of the white fat in your body into the more beneficial brown fat. "Cold exposure is well-established in activating BAT and promoting the browning of white adipose tissue (WAT)," says Dr. Yang. You can hop in an ice bath, dip into a cold plunge, try cryotherapy or take a cold shower. "Both resistance and aerobic training have been shown to upregulate markers of browning, such as UCP1, in adipose tissue. Exercise-induced activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in skeletal muscle also plays a role in promoting BAT activity," says Dr Yang. Simply put: you'll want to do cardio and strength training to help activate brown fat. Dr. Yang says that there's some research that specific foods like chili peppers and green tea contain nutrients that support brown fat. "Capsaicin and capsinoids (found in chili peppers) and catechins (found in green tea) have demonstrated efficacy in clinical trials. Other compounds such as curcumin, quercetin, berberine, lipoic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and royal jelly have shown promising results in animal or in vitro studies, but clinical trials are needed to confirm their effects in humans," she explains. "Dietary interventions like calorie restriction and intermittent fasting also favor WAT browning and metabolic efficiency," she adds. But always be sure to consult a doctor before trying calorie-restrictive diets or intermittent fasting, since these diets are not safe for everyone.
