Model Ameera Khan faces backlash for reaping Bumi privileges after admitting her non-Malay ancestry

Focus Malaysia11-06-2025
ONLY in Malaysia does a person's ethnicity receive such close scrutiny.
It is not enough to proclaim loyalty and patriotism to one's motherland; it must also be accompanied by declarations identifying with a certain race.
The most recent example of this had to do with model and influencer Ameera Khan who had the temerity to insist that she isn't Malay.
She was merely clarifying that her mother is of Arab ancestry while her father is of Pakistani descent with the family settling in Kelantan.
Ameera went on t9 disclose that – as a matter of convenience – she usually replies that she is Malay when queried about her ethnicity during casual encounters.
However, she took the opportunity to clarify the matter in a live Instagram session recently by pointing out that both her parents are NOT Malay.
She is proud of her roots and can even speak Kelantanese dialect but some had taken great umbrage at her denial of Malay ancestry.
#kualalumpur #rap 'Saya bukan tak nak mengaku berbangsa Melayu, memang ibu dan ayah saya tidak mempunyai darah Melayu. Jadi nak mengaku Melayu buat apa?' – Ameera Khanhttps://t.co/u22BCilEPj
— Harian Metro (@hmetromy) June 9, 2025
As reported by Harian Metro, the 25-year-old celebrity asked why must she claim to be Malay when her ancestry clearly is not.
There has been mixed reaction online as netizens proffer their two sen's on the young model's declaration of identity.
There were netizens who just plainly did not like her rejection of being labelled 'Malay'. One even went as far as equating Ameera to PATI (illegal foreigner) just because she did not identify herself as a Malay.
Quite a few pointed out that there should be clear guidelines by the National Registration Department (NRD) to ensure that people like Ameera do NOT qualify for Bumiputera status/privileges.
One extended the question to Ameera's elder sibling – Neelofa – who is in currently enrolled in MRSM (MARA Junior Science College) which is supposedly reserved for Bumiputera.
It must be noted that Under Article 160 of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia, a person is considered Malay if they profess the religion of Islam, habitually speak the Malay language and conform to Malay customs.
Additionally, they must either be born, born of parents (one of whom was born or domiciled in Malaysia) or be the child of those parents.
However, more than few queried why a person need to lie about their heritage or ancestry? Why claim to be something they are clearly not?
One netizen sided Ameera by asserting that the forceful claiming of a person's ancestry and heritage as Malay when it isn't is shameful.
As one commenter observed, this is what it has boiled down to – citizens who feel they are 'ori' and 'pure' Malays have become disgruntled simply because there are Malaysian Muslims who identify as non-Malays.
Few things to note about this storm-in-a-teacup.
Firstly, this is not a 'rejection' or 'denial' of Malay ancestry. It is a mere statement of fact that Ameera Khan does not have Malay blood and her surname is a major clue on this issue.
Secondly, though Ameera may claim she does not, in fact, have Malay blood running through her veins, she is actually entitled to call herself that as defined by Article 160 of the Federal Constitution.
Thirdly, isn't there more important news to occupy Harian Metro's column inches, wondered on commenter' – June 11, 2025

K-pop superstar G-Dragon declares Malaysia 'mantap (superb)' at his two-day sold-out concerts in Bukit Jalil

For G-Dragon fans at Bukit Jalil last weekend, the party started even before the concerts at Axiata Arena. Almost 50,000 loyal fans of the superstar singer flooded the area during the weekend, and it was party from the word go. In fact, fans were already at the stadium from as early as 1pm and many even came to the venue wearing fashion ware that G-Dragon is famous for. Fans were not disappointed as G-Dragon made a triumphant return to Kuala Lumpur with a two-day performance that bedazzled his fans and many were left chanting for more. There were more cheers as G-Dragon even tried to speak Malay with the fans and even said " Saya gembira jumpa korang (I'm delighted to meet you guys)" and then of course Malaysia " mantap (superb)". He also added that he is " Syok gila (immensely happy)" and " you all enjoy tak (everyone enjoying yourself right)". It was an F1 speed show with a lot of thrills and spills as fans were immensely enjoying themselves during the two-plus-hour show. In short, the show presented by Hong Leong, the 2025 World Tour [Übermensch] simply dazzled Malaysian fans with a visually stunning and incredibly powerful vocal performance that proved the K-pop icon's continued global influence. Promoted by AEG Presents, TME Live, Star Planet, and Top Top Production, the tour attracted fans from across Malaysia and neighbouring countries. Over 20,000 attendees packed the arena across the two days, thoroughly enjoying themselves. Among the songs that were performed at the shows were fan favourites "POWER, HOME SWEET HOME, BONAMANA, TAKE ME, DRAMA, GYRO-DROP" which had almost all the attendees singing along to his tunes. Fans even turned up with the singer's most popular items at his concert - the Day-G (GD official daisy-shaped light stick), waving it away for almost all his songs. On top of that, fans were also roaring in approval as even former Olympic and Malaysian badminton star Lee Chong Wei and his family were in attendance for the concert. During the concert, fans even went wilder when G-Dragon made a special announcement when he said his super group Big Bang is also getting back together next year. "You know what, guys, next year, is Big Bang's 20th anniversary celebration. And we will be back together," said G-Dragon as the fans were celebrating wildly at the venue. Like G-Dragon, the group Big Bang is also among the super icons in the K-pop industry and has many international super hits during their long music career. "It has been an incredible journey, thus far. And I hope it keeps getting better in the time to come. It is a very special year for Big Bang next year and it is going to be even a bigger party the coming year," said G-Dragon. Fans at the concert were just immensely happy with the concert experience. One fan, Ameera Filzah, said: "He's called the King of K-pop for a reason. The stage design was mind-blowing, with insane visuals, special effects that felt like something out of a dream. It wasn't just a concert; it was a journey through every chapter of his solo career. From the iconic hits to the deeper, emotional tracks. It was nostalgic, electric, and honestly, one of the most fun and unforgettable nights of my life.' Another fan, Sindhu Vijayan, said the whole concert was a special moment as many fans managed to witness his comeback live. "You could see how happy and full of energy he was. His stage presence had us all under a spell. You could feel how much he truly appreciates his fans. I still can't get over it," said Sindhu. I loved the visual and emotional journey he took us on. "He even opened up about his past struggles, and you could sense how deeply personal this return is for him, like he's finally reconnecting with his purpose and passion as an artist. It felt like he was free to be his most authentic self, and the fans are so ready to stand by him every step of the way. The entire show was stunning from start to finish — powerful, emotional, inspiring.' From Alleged Empty Seats To Crying Fans Outside The Venue: Things That Went Down At G-Dragon's KL Concert

Over the weekend, K-pop icon G-Dragon (권지용) held his highly anticipated 2-day 'Übermensch' concert in Kuala Lumpur. Ever since ticket sales went live, the show has been a hot topic among Malaysian fans due to issues surrounding scalping and foreign buyers. Concert organiser Star Planet attempted to address the scalping problem by re-releasing a few hundred tickets; however, they were soon met with fresh accusations. Although the concert itself was amazing, on the first day, Malaysian fans, including influencers, highlighted several concerns about the event, alleging unfair treatment by the organiser. This appeared to confirm some of their suspicions about what had been going on behind the scenes. Here's a breakdown of what happened during the performance that left many Malaysian fans upset. Empty Seats After the venue gates were opened, fans claimed that many seats remained empty despite the concert being sold out, suspecting that scalpers had been unable to resell their tickets in time. Those waiting outside also alleged that a significant number of VIP pass lanyards were left unclaimed at the registration counter, even after the concert had started. Thankfully, the seats were eventually filled, as observed by several fans, including TV presenter Hani Fadzil. However, this did not entirely dispel allegations that many of the seats had been secured by foreign fans. Reactions to G-Dragon Speaking Malay As Malaysians, we love hearing our favourite idols attempt to speak our national language during their appearances, and we often cheer in appreciation of their efforts to interact with us. However, local fans who attended the weekend shows claimed that there was hardly any reaction from the crowd when G-Dragon spoke in Malay, despite his attempts to engage with the audience. This fuelled suspicions that a significant portion of the audience were not locals and therefore could not understand what the idol was saying. Influencer Alex HKF also noted that the rapper spoke very little Malay on Day 2 of the concert, although this may have been due to health reasons, as he appeared to be conserving his energy. Crowd Comparison to Other BIGBANG Members Proof that the crowds are not Malaysian. They only know to sing in their own language and even GD LOOKS SHOCKED as they only sing that part. I dont blame them, i blame STARPLANET for ripped the opportunities from Malaysian fans. #GDinKL #GDRAGONINKL #GDRAGON — Meowwww~~~~💙 (@nody_meow) July 20, 2025 As many may know, two other BIGBANG members had performed in Malaysia prior to G-Dragon's concert. A video circulated on TikTok highlighting the contrast in local fans' excitement during those shows compared to G-Dragon's. The clips showed an electric atmosphere at the previous concerts, with fans singing and dancing along to the songs. In contrast, at G-Dragon's show, particularly among those in the front row, the crowd appeared less enthusiastic, with little crowd participation or singing. This led to speculation that many of those in prime spots were foreign attendees. Local Fans Enjoying the Concert From Outside the Venue It's not uncommon to see fans enjoying a concert from outside the venue, either because they couldn't afford tickets or were unable to secure seats. However, this scene at G-Dragon's show sparked widespread backlash online, with many accusing the organiser of prioritising foreign buyers. Videos circulated showing fans booing the staff and chanting for the doors to be opened to let them in to enjoy the concert. Prior to showtime, it was reported that members of the BIGBANG star's team approached fans outside the venue, inviting them to leave warm messages for the idol. Many were seen in tears after expressing their emotions and disappointment at not being able to see him perform live on stage. The viral clips drew sympathy from other fans who had also been unable to secure tickets. GD's Übermench crew came outside of the stadium and asked to leave a message to GD. When it ended me and other Fams all started crying. We are all victims of EO's unfairness. #GDRAGONinKL #GDinKL — farah (@t_o_p_class) July 20, 2025 At the time of writing, Star Planet Malaysia has yet to publicly address the allegations made against them. It's unfortunate that many fans had such an experience, and we hope that the next time G-Dragon—or BIGBANG as a group—returns to Malaysia, it will be an even bigger and better occasion for everyone.

Tony Lim's viral fight sparks debate on self-defence, anger management

IT wasn't just a fight on the streets that threw viral MMA fighter Tony Lim Zhe Hong into the limelight. It was his defense for an elderly man that made his action worthy of a Hollywood movie. The instant fame has since befuddled Lim, who wondered about the popularity of the video. But apparently, there is a different side of him too, as seen in a recent video on X. 'A life lesson that I learned is that self defense is very important. If I don't know how to defend myself, in this situation maybe I am the one who fell to the ground,' said the 22-year old Lim in the video interview. At one time in his life, Lim wanted to play badminton but was provoked by his friend, claiming that the sport was for transvestites. Sorry to all the badminton fans out there. The ending is chef kiss — @ (@anthraxxxx) July 18, 2025 Contrary to the brawn displayed in the video, Lim studies psychology and is a part time tuition teacher. However, it appears his action has also attracted some haters on the cyberspace. Netizen @Alhaqim01 said they needed the story from the point of view of the Malay man who got beaten up by Lim. Some even threatened to beat him up. According to @taro_liam, Lim was safe because the Malay man did not die on the scene. Safe to say, the viral fight would not have occurred if the combatants were able to control their anger. Fascinatingly, martial arts, while playing a huge role in ending the fight, would have played an even bigger role in ensuring that it did not start in the first place. According to the website Evolve Daily, martial arts is a well-rounded practice that can effectively support anger management and guide individuals toward greater emotional balance and happiness. While each martial arts discipline involves different movements and techniques, all styles share a physically active foundation. Participants are required to move, sweat, and engage their bodies—activities known to help diffuse anger. Physical exercise releases endorphins, the body's natural mood enhancers, which can improve overall emotional outlook and promote a more positive mindset. Beyond the physical benefits, martial arts offers a unique mental focus. When individuals experience rising anger, training can help redirect their attention. Whether sparring with a partner, executing striking combinations in a Muay Thai session, or drilling positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, practitioners must concentrate on their movements, their training partners, and the objectives of the session. This mindfulness helps calm the mind and fosters mental clarity. In essence, martial arts provides both a physical and psychological outlet, helping practitioners process emotions constructively while building discipline, awareness, and resilience. —July 20, 2025 Main image: @anthraxxxx (X)
