ESPN announces "multi-year agreement" with Dan Orlovsky
It was reported a month ago by Andrew Marchand of TheAthletic.com. It was re-reported elsewhere earlier this week. It's now official.
ESPN has announced that NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky has signed a 'multi-year agreement' to remain with the network.
He's a regular on NFL Live and a member of the three-person 'B' team Monday Night Football booth, which will work five games in 2025.
Orlovsky joined ESPN in 2018, after an NFL career that includes 26 regular-season appearances and 12 starts. Seven of them came during the Lions' 0-16 season of 2008, the first in NFL history.
That was the year Orlovsky ran out of the end zone against the Vikings in Minnesota. And, to be fair and accurate, it wasn't that he accidentally stepped on the white stripe. He took eight or nine steps on the back line before realizing he had handed the Vikings the first two points of a game that ended with Minnesota winning, 12-10.
Which means that the game was a safety away from going to overtime, and possibly giving the Lions what would have been their only win of the year.
And, yes, I picked a photo of Orlovsky with Chris 'Mad Dog' Russo in the frame, because I'm trying to imagine what Mad Dog was saying to Orlovsky at the time. I choose to think it went something like this.
Can I ask you a question? Just one question. What were you thinking when you ran out of the end zone? When you looked down and saw it was white under your feet, did you think that stadium Minnesota had lost its roof and it was snowing? Had you gotten into my gummies? And why didn't you do it like six more times? I had Minnesota giving 13 that day. You killed me, Orvolebowski. Killed me!

New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has some extremely high goals for Caleb Williams this season, which would put the second-year quarterback in an elite group if he can pull it off. 'It's a lofty goal, but it's one we're going to strive for.' The Bears went just 5-12 under his watch, missed the playoffs for a fourth straight season and ended up firing head coach Matt Eberflus. That led to the Bears hiring Johnson, who was previously the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator. Advertisement Williams completed just 62.5% of his passes last season, too, so that 70% mark that Johnson set would be a significant increase. In fact, only four true starting quarterbacks who played the entire campaign last season completed 70% of their passes or better. Lions quarterback Jared Goff led the way with 72.4%. It would take a significant jump for Williams to pull that off, though it would undoubtedly both throw himself into the MVP conversation and mean that the Bears are among the best in the NFC if he can get it done. With Johnson now leading the way, and a very solid group around him, the goals in place for Williams aren't unobtainable by any means. He's very likely to make a significant improvement after his rookie season, too. Advertisement Whether he can hit those admittedly lofty goals from Johnson, though, remains to be seen.

Former Colts playmaker returns to NFL after two-year absence
A former fixture of the Colts offense has returned to the NFL after a lengthy injury absence. On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers signed former Colts running back Nyheim Hines to a deal. Hines joins the Chargers four days into their training camp activities and will get a shot to make an immaculate comeback from injury. Advertisement Hines played four full seasons in Indy, mostly operating as a versatile receiving back. In 65 games (12 starts), he hauled in 210 receptions for 1,537 receiving yards (7.3 yards per catch) and seven touchdowns. In addition, he rushed for 1,169 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns. The Colts traded Hines to Buffalo at the 2022 deadline before tearing his ACL the following summer in a jet skiing accident. The 28-year-old was released and signed with the Browns ahead of the 2024 season but never made an appearance. He was released in February. Now, Hines lands with his fourth different AFC team since being drafted in 2018. He faces an uphill battle towards playing time, but still will be in the mix for a roster spot. The Chargers drafted Omarion Hampton in the first round in April and signed Najee Harris to a one-year, $5.25 million deal in free agency. Los Angeles also has Hassan Haskins and second-year back Kimani Vidal on their depth chart. If Hines proves himself healthy and sharp enough to be back on the field, he could carve out a role for himself in the Chargers offense.
