ATM bombing rocks Ga-Nala in early hours of the morning
Kriel police are urgently appealing to the public for any information that could help trace a group of armed individuals who bombed an ABSA ATM early this morning at the Kwikspar Complex on Mooilaan.
According to Kriel Police Station spokesperson Constable Angel Makubo, the incident occurred at approximately 01:30.
It is believed that eight to 10 heavily armed men used explosives to destroy the ATM and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
Initial reports suggest that a security guard on duty heard gunshots, followed by a massive explosion and more gunfire.
When it became quiet, he discovered that the ATM had been bombed and that the suspects had already fled the scene.
No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.

Authorities have released the final results of the joint law enforcement effort that took place in Norwood on June 19 under Operation Shanela, confirming a series of arrests and confiscations during what has been described as a highly successful crackdown on crime. Further into the operation, officers arrested a suspect found in possession of a toy firearm, a black-handled knife, and a credit card believed to have been stolen during a robbery. In a separate incident, one person was arrested after being found with a stolen identity document. SAPS also confirmed that drugs were confiscated near the M1 on-ramp at Glenhove in Houghton. A second-hand goods business was immediately closed for non-compliance with regulations, and 10 traffic fines were issued for various offences committed during the operation. In total, police searched 417 individuals and nine premises across the Norwood area. The large-scale operation involved collaboration between 21 police stations from Johannesburg's East, North, and Central areas, as well as the SAPS K9 unit, JMPD, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Norwood CPF, Home Affairs, and private security companies. Brigadier Vusimuzi Michael Ngubane served as the overall operational commander, with Brigadier Mitchell Jones leading ground efforts. Warrant Officer Eric Mastosha praised the role of the community, saying that many of the arrests and discoveries were made possible thanks to residents' tip-offs. 'It shows we are in a strong partnership with our community in the fight against crime,' he said. The operation was well-received by the public, with many residents expressing appreciation for the increased visibility of law enforcement in the area. According to Mastosha, the targeted hotspots were all attended to, and while no illegal firearms were recovered, the operation addressed several key concerns raised by the community. Authorities have since confirmed that the Norwood leg of Operation Shanela was a great success. Randpark resident urges the community to look out for scammers
Randpark Ridge resident Mduduzi Nkosi is warning fellow residents to stay vigilant following a troubling encounter with a scammer impersonating a City of Joburg official. Read more: City Power launches imbizo programme Nkosi explained that a man claiming to be a contractor arrived at his property, stating he was conducting an audit of electricity meters in the area. The individual alleged that Nkosi's meter had been tampered with and threatened to disconnect his electricity supply. However, the so-called contractor was driving an unmarked vehicle and failed to present any identification or documentation from the City of Joburg. 'I argued that my meter is not prepaid and that I have never tampered with it. I asked what evidence he had that I breached the meter. He failed to answer my questions. I have never elected to do the readings myself, but I rely on the statements received from the city monthly. I have never received phone calls that the City had issues with my meter,' Nkosi said. Concerned, Nkosi contacted the city directly. After some engagement, officials confirmed that it was indeed a scam—one that appears to be on the rise. 'Following the talk with the city official, an internal person was sent with the correct documentation and vehicle to check the meter. He confirmed that the scammer had tampered with it to create the impression that we breached it, likely to demand a ransom,' he said. The meter was subsequently repaired, and a new bill from the city confirmed that all records were accurate. Nkosi now wants to alert other residents. 'I can confidently confirm that it was a scam and something other residents should know about, as this is becoming a pandemic of lawlessness by criminal syndicates.' City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena confirmed that they are aware of these incidents, stating that criminals are using counterfeit credentials to pose as City Power employees or contractors to gain access to homes and businesses. Mangena urges customers to remain cautious and verify the identities of anyone claiming to represent City Power. 'Our employees and contractors are required to always carry their official City Power ID cards while on duty. These ID cards are colour-coded according to different sections within the entity and display important identifying information.' Residents and business owners are encouraged to check the credentials of City Power personnel by calling the number provided on the back of the ID card. Official City Power ID cards include: A photograph and personal details of the employee or contractor A verification (badge) number and expiry date A firefly hologram for added security Contact details on the back for verification Additionally, authorised Token Identifier (TID) agents can be identified by their yellow-branded bibs or T-shirts and valid ID cards that display their photo, name, surname, and expiry date. Local police members mourn loss of fellow officer
Police in Empangeni and eSikhaleni are mourning the loss of one of their own after Sergeant NK Mbatha was shot dead on Saturday night. The shooting occurred just before midnight in eSikhaleni Reserve 18, while Mbatha, his girlfriend and cousin were walking home from a tavern. According to police reports, they were approached by seven individuals, two of whom grabbed them from behind while three searched them. Mbatha was in possession of his State-issued firearm, which was stolen during the attack. He tried to fight back, but was overpowered and shot twice in the stomach. He was rushed to Phaphamani Clinic in J1 section, but succumbed to his wounds. One bullet head and one empty cartridge were found at the scene. The crime scene was attended by various police officials, including acting district commander Brigadier Mhlongo, acting station commander LT Col Fakazi, branch commander Lt Col Gwala, duty officer Capt Mzimela LCRC, as well as detectives on standby.
