Dodgers recall Alexis Diaz to join bullpen

Reuters08-07-2025
July 8 - The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Alexis Diaz, the former All-Star closer they acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in May, ahead of their road game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.
Manager Dave Roberts confirmed to reporters that Diaz would be active on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, Los Angeles optioned right-hander Julian Fernandez.
Los Angeles traded minor league right-hander Mike Vilani to Cincinnati on May 29 for Diaz, who has since pitched 4 2/3 innings across six appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Diaz allowed five runs, walked seven batters and struck out three.
Diaz, 28, was an All-Star selection in 2023 but lost his closer role in Cincinnati to Emilio Pagan earlier this season. He has appeared in just six big-league games in 2025 and allowed eight runs over six innings for a 12.00 ERA. The Reds optioned Diaz to Triple-A on May 1.
Before his rough patch, Diaz amassed 75 saves and an 18-14 record over his first three major league seasons, all with Cincinnati. He owns a career 3.21 ERA.
Fernandez, 29, was recalled and made his team debut Monday, yielding two runs on two hits in two innings of mop-up work in the Dodgers' 9-1 loss to Milwaukee.
The ailing Dodgers, losers of four straight, could use all the help they can get. They have been outscored 38-7 during their current slide, and their bullpen ranks 24th in the major leagues in ERA (4.46).

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba in question vs. FC Cincinnati

July 25 - Inter Miami will host FC Cincinnati in a matchup of two of the top five teams in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. FC Cincinnati (15-6-3, 48 points) blanked Inter Miami 3-0 on July 16 and surged to the top spot in the conference following a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake last Saturday. Inter Miami (12-4-5, 41 points) rebounded from its loss to Cincinnati with a 5-1 win over the New York Red Bulls last Saturday and sit in fifth place with three more matches to play than each of the East's top four teams. FC Cincinnati held Lionel Messi without a goal in the previous matchup, snapping the superstar's league-record streak of five matches with a brace. But Miami enters Saturday's clash with some uncertainty surrounding two of their biggest stars after Messi and Jordi Alba did not participate in Wednesday's All-Star Game. MLS rules state that any All-Star player who does not participate in the game without either a reported injury or a league-granted exemption faces a one-match suspension. The league has yet to announce such a move. "Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't," MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday. "So we have to manage that as a league. At the same time, we do have rules, and we have to manage through that as well." Cincinnati superstar Evander, who scored two goals in the recent victory over Miami, served as team captain in the MLS All-Stars' 3-1 win over the Liga MX All-Stars. Evander also set a record in the All-Star Game Skills challenge for points scored. He enters Saturday's game with the third-most goal contributions in the league (23). "Just playing (and) just enjoying the moment," Evander said on the Apple TV broadcast. "I was kind of focused on the targets, and I did it." Luca Orellano, who scored the lone goal in the win over Real Salt Lake, also continues to be a force in terms of creating scoring chances. For Cincinnati, Ahoueke Denkey (leg), Obinna Nwobodo (leg) and Yuya Kubo (ankle) remain out. Miami is expected to again be without injured goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and likely will turn to Rocco Rios Novo in net again. Maxi Falcon also is out due to yellow card accumulation. --Field Level Media

Man Utd files: Ruben Amorim considers shock striker transfer as Red Devils hand busy schedule to bankrupt club legend

RUBEN Amorim is convinced his summer captures have already made a difference. Amorim's pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha saw United splash out more than £130m to land the duo. And the Portuguese boss has already noticed the impact on the rest of his squad - who know they have a fight on their hands to get in the team. Amorim is understood to believe that Mbeumo and Cunha have brought a stimulus in terms of both energy and quality which has already rubbed off on their new team-mates. The United boss was particularly pleased with completing Mbeumo's capture from Brentford in time for him to join up with the party that jets to the USA on Tuesday, having been fearful that the Bees might play hardball and delay the move from going through. He put his players through a two and a half hour session as the temperatures rose in Chicago on Wednesday, their first training spell after arriving in Chicago following the eight-hour flight from Manchester. Another intensive effort followed on Thursday morning, with training starting at 8.30am to avoid the full sauna effect of the heat and humidity that was significant by mid-morning. United will train at Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears NFL side, today before they fly to New York ahead of their Summer Series opener against West Ham tomorrow (Sat). FRONT LOADED Despite that expenditure, Amorim has not ruled out signing a new centre-forward. Yet it may be another deadline day trolley dash. While Marcus Rashford's loan move to Barcelona has got £16m off the club's wage bill, with sell-on clauses for previous player sales adding to the pot, PSR concerns are still live. United retain an interest in Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko, although there is little enthusiasm, at this stage, in helping out Chelsea's desire to shift Nicolas Jackson - and certainly not at the Blues' £80m valuation. 'You ain't well man' - Rio Ferdinand screams at Wayne Rooney's driving as Man Utd stars reunite for US road trip But unless United can raise funds - with getting rid of the remaining members of the 'Bomb Squad' of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrrell Malacia - a priority, it seems unlikely that a striker deal will be pushed through any time soon. United believe Juventus' interest in Sancho is serious and feel that Garnacho will have suitors in the Prem, although there is an awareness that as effectively forced sellers they might struggle to get their preferred asking price on any of the quartet. 7 MOUNT EVEREST Mason Mount has promised the United fans they WILL see the best of him this season. Mount has been plagued by injuries since his £55m move from Chelsea in 2023, making just 13 Prem starts in two seasons. But Mount, 26, says a new training module has put him in 'a really good place' ahead of the new campaign. A golf trip to Spain and family break meant he came back 'rested' and ready to go for a season that could end in an England recall and a place in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad. Mount explained: 'I slowly built up some sessions in the off-season, and that was from the staff here. 'They give us a little schedule to work off and just build up on our training. 'The first message was to rest for the first week or so and then build up and be ready because when we come back to pre-season, we know it's going to be kicking on and trying to get to the levels as quick as possible. 'We've looked at what I need to do in more detail. The small things matter massively in this day and age. 'When you've had small setbacks, it's about how you correct that and how you push on, and I think we've done that.' LIFE'S A BEACH Matheus Cunha made himself at home in true Brazilian style at the start of United's stint in Chicago. The £62.5m signing from Wolves grew up in Joao Pessoa, a port city on Brazil's North East coast and 1500 road miles from Rio. And Cunha led the United party spotted chilling out in a cafe bar on the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan, just a few minutes' walk from their city centre hotel. Cunha and Co were not exactly mobbed in a city that is all about the Bears and the Bulls but United fans asking for autographs were not turned away. FALL-EN HEROES One-time Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon promised to 'turn the world blue' when he pitched up at Chelsea under Roman Abramovich. That did not really happen but two decades later United successfully turned one of the globe's most famous water features red. A firework display marked the unlikely event as the Niagara Falls on the US-Canadian border were transformed into a flowing carpet in United colours on Wednesday night. 7 PITCH PERFECT Former United and England right-back Wes Brown is earning his corn out here in the US. Brown, who was declared bankrupt in 2023, is the official 'legend' accompanying Ruben Amorim's squad for the Premier League Summer Series games in New Jersey, Chicago and Atlanta. And it means the five-times Prem winner, who also picked up two Champions League winners' medals in his United career, is being sent out for almost non-stop flag waving. Brown, 45, will be taking part in seven different 'fan engagement' events, including throwing the ceremonial first pitch when the Chicago White Sox baseball side host the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Then again, Brown was always a versatile player for Fergie.

Ohtani aims to break Dodgers' consecutive HR record as team hits the road

LOS ANGELES, July 24 (Reuters) - Shohei Ohtani hit his fifth home run in as many games to help the Los Angeles Dodgers secure a 4-3 walkoff victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, tying a franchise record and moving closer to setting a new mark when the team opens a nine-game road trip Friday in Boston. Ohtani gave the Dodgers an early advantage with a solo shot to left-center field in the first inning on a sun-soaked day at Dodger Stadium for his National League-leading 37th homer of the season. The Japanese slugger became the first MLB player to hit home runs in five consecutive games since Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees achieved the feat last season. He also matched the Dodgers' franchise record for consecutive games with a home run, a milestone reached five times previously, most recently by Max Muncy in 2019. The fear Ohtani puts in the hearts of opposing teams was laid bare when the Twins intentionally walked him with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, moving Mookie Betts into scoring position and Ohtani to first, where he represented the game-winning run. Esteury Ruiz followed with a walk to load the bases, and Freddie Freeman lined a single to left field that got under the glove of the diving Harrison Bader, sealing the win and snapping the Dodgers' recent slump. "How we got here today, showing the fight and willing ourselves to get Freddie an at-bat to win a game like that, I'd like to think that is momentum building," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. Ohtani, who signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with Los Angeles prior to last season, is the frontrunner for a second consecutive NL MVP award and fourth overall. After becoming the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season last year, Ohtani continues to produce at the plate, leading the NL in runs scored, slugging percentage and OPS. He returned to the mound last month for the first time since August 2023 following a second surgery on his right elbow. Roberts has limited Ohtani's workload, with the two-way star pitching six times for a total of 12 innings this season as the NL West-leading Dodgers pursue a second consecutive World Series title. The Dodgers open their road trip against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday.
