Slain Beed sarpanch's daughter cracks NEET, Ajit Pawar calls her, ‘inspiration for new generation'
Santosh Deshmukh was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered on December 9, 2023, in a case that sparked a political storm across Maharashtra. Despite the trauma, Vaibhavi not only passed her Class XII exams but also cleared the highly competitive National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) entrance test for medical admissions.
Ajit Pawar, who is also the guardian minister of Beed district, shared a post on X, he wrote, 'Her journey is about unwavering determination in the face of adversity and is sure an inspiration for the new generation.'
'Vaibhavi's success cannot be measured by marks alone. Despite enduring personal hardships and battling extremely challenging circumstances, she refused to be discouraged or lose focus. Channelling her grief into grit, she persevered with discipline, dedication, and clarity of purpose to pursue and realize her dream of a career in medicine,' Pawar said in his post.
He also noted that Vaibhavi never gave up even after losing her father under such difficult circumstances.
Santosh Deshmukh, a Maratha, was allegedly killed for opposing an extortion racket linked to an energy firm. Valmik Karad, a close associate of Dhananjay Munde—then a minister and member of Ajit Pawar's NCP—was among those arrested. The accused were charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The incident triggered a political fallout, with Munde stepping down from his post after severe criticism from both the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi and allies within the ruling Mahayuti.
The case also reignited caste tensions, as most of the accused were from the Vanjari community.
The murder turned Beed into a flashpoint in the ongoing debate around law and order in Maharashtra, but Vaibhavi's achievement has now offered a story of hope and resilience emerging from tragedy.

Elderly Couple Killed In Hit-And-Run On Pune Highway, Captured In CCTV: Cops
Pune: An elderly couple was killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident on the Pune-Solapur Highway near Bhigwan in Pune district on Sunday morning, a police official from Pune Rural Police said. According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Malhari Pawar (57) and Pankhabai Pawar (50), both residents of Ahilyanagar district. The couple was reportedly returning from Pandharpur after participating in the Ashadi Ekadashi pilgrimage when the accident occurred. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when the couple was riding their motorcycle on the highway. A speeding oil tanker allegedly rammed into their two-wheeler from behind. Malhari Pawar died on the spot, while pillion rider Pankhabai Pawar succumbed to her injuries during treatment at a private hospital. Police further stated that the tanker driver did not stop after the collision and fled the scene immediately. Local authorities and passersby rushed the injured woman to the hospital, but she could not be saved. The entire incident was also captured on CCTV footage. According to Vinod Mahangade, Assistant Police Inspector posted at Bhigwan Police Station, "A case has been registered at the Bhigwan Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act against the unidentified tanker driver. Police teams are working to trace the vehicle involved in the incident." Further investigation is underway.

FIR against couple for cheating chit fund investors
The Ramamurthy Nagar police on Saturday booked a couple, who were running a chit fund, for allegedly cheating hundreds of their customers. The accused have been identified as Tomy A.V. and Shiny Tomy, owner of the A&A Chit Fund and Finance. The police registered the FIR on July 5, following a complaint by one of the victims, Savio P.T. Savio, 64, who alleged that he and his family lost around ₹70 lakh. 'When I checked on Saturday, the chit fund office was closed, and the couple stopped responding to my calls, and their mobile phones were switched off,' Mr. Savio said in his complaint. The couple had been operating chit fund since 2005, and hundreds of customers invested crores of rupees on the promise that they would get 25% returns against their investment after a certain period of time. The case was registered under various provisions of the Chit Funds Act, 1982; the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Ordinance, 2019; and the section 318(4) (cheating) and 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A police officer said the couple appeared to be absconding, and efforts were on to track them down.

Police book Kerala Govt Nurses Association members for assaulting United Nurses Association state vice-president
Thiruvananthapuram : Cantonment police booked 12 members of Kerala Govt Nurses Association (KGNA) for allegedly attacking United Nurses Association (UNA) state vice-president Mini Boby, 54, over a dispute associated with the nursing council elections. She was attacked allegedly during the counting of votes for the council elections held on Friday night. Mini alleged that the accused disrupted the counting by stating that most of UNA's votes were fake and that the counting centre was locked. When she questioned it, she was attacked. "The accused held me by my dress and pushed me. As I fell down, they kicked me on my leg and thigh. They also verbally abused me. They did this after they realised that UNA candidates would win the elections. The accused alleged that 40,000 votes of UNA were fake when the total votes were 1.5 lakh," said Mini. Police registered the case against the accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 115 (2) for voluntarily causing hurt, 126 (2) for wrongful restraint, 296 (b) for abusing and 351 (2) for criminal intimidation.
