Mahayuti parties battling each other during poaching spree
Mumbai: The three Mahayuti parties, which are on a poaching spree from opposition parties ahead of local body polls across Maharashtra later this year, are in some cases battling with each other for local leaders in various districts. Leaders from the ruling alliance believe that the competition will only increase as the polls near. Mumbai, India – 18, June 2025: Former Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil Granddaughter-in Law, Jayashri Patil join BJP in the presence of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, and BJP Maharashtra State president Chandrakant Bawankule, BJP minister Chandrakant Patil, at BJP office, Nariman point, in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. For instance, Jayashree Patil, the granddaughter-in-law of former chief minister and the late Congress leader Vasantdada Patil, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last week. A day earlier, the Shiv Sena (UBT) Nashik city chief, Sudhakar Badgujar, joined the party in the presence of senior BJP leaders in Mumbai. Both leaders, who are believed to have strongholds in their respective districts, were willing to join Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, but it was the BJP that managed to woo them, according to leaders aware of the developments.
These aren't one-off cases. Badgujar's close aide and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader from Nashik, Vilas Shinde, is expected to join Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena soon. Vilas Shinde was willing to switch to the BJP, along with Badgujar, but Eknath Shinde succeeded in convincing him—and at least eight other former corporators—to join his party.
Earlier this week, the Shinde-led Sena inducted 22 former corporators from various parties, including the NCP and BJP, apart from the opposition Congress in Kolhapur. The BJP's local leadership in Kolhapur is said to be unhappy over the poaching, said a party insider.
In April, four former MLAs, along with former corporators and key office bearers from various parties, joined the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Many of them, including former MLA Vilasrao Jagtap, were in the BJP earlier.
Insiders from the Mahayuti parties admitted that this poaching leads to a tussle and uneasiness between local leaders and party workers. 'It will grow further during the local body polls,' said a BJP leader, requesting anonymity. 'This, however, is expected by the workers, as we are used to such turmoil in politics because of the splits in the Shiv Sena and NCP in 2022 and 2023. Local workers and leaders from the BJP and NCP or Shiv Sena and NCP have been fighting against each other for years, but it was not the case between the Shiv Sena and the BJP. Most of these leaders and former corporators are joining parties convenient to them to get the candidature in the local body polls.'
A Shiv Sena leader added that the Mahayuti parties are trying to one-up each other while making political offers to leaders they want to poach. 'Like in the case of Jayashree Patil, she is believed to have gotten a better political offer, including nomination to the legislative council and relaxation in legal action against a local bank under her. Though she was ready to join the NCP, the BJP lured her with a better offer,' the leader said.
Political analyst Hemant Desai said that the tussle between the Mahayuti parties will only increase further in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as the polls near. 'Shinde has already poached most of the Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators, and could demand more seats on that basis from the BJP. Similarly, the two parties are at loggerheads in Thane for political clout. This will happen between the Mahayuti parties in the districts where they are fighting for political power against each other,' he added.
According to Shiv Sena leaders, corruption cases emerging against their leaders like Sanjay Shirsat and Sandipanrao Bhumre are part of the tussle between the two ruling parties. 'The cases could be used by other ruling parties to keep these leaders, who are a strong voice in their respective districts, in check during the local body polls,' said a Shiv Sena leader from Marathwada, requesting anonymity.

Bangladesh pays $384 million to Adani Power to clear majority of dues
Bangladesh paid $384 million to Adani Power in June, significantly reducing its outstanding dues under a power supply agreement with the Indian firm, according to sources. In June (till June 27), Bangladesh has paid $384 million of the committed $437 million to be paid during the month, two sources aware of the matter said. This would clear Bangladesh's "admitted" claims till March 31. With this, Adani's "claimed" dues, while still substantial, will come down to around $500 million (assuming Bangladesh meets its month-end commitment), they said. Bangladesh has struggled to meet its payment obligations under the 2017 deal, as rising import costs following the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022 and domestic political turmoil - which led to the ouster of prime minister Sheikh Hasina — strained the country's finances. As a result, Adani had halved supply last year and full supplies were resumed in March 2025 after the country's monthly payments started covering some of the dues. Nearly $1.5 billion paid With the latest payments, Bangladesh has paid nearly $1.5 billion of the roughly $2 billion total billed amount. Adani has reportedly agreed to waive late payment surcharge (LPS) for January-June period, amounting to about $20 million, if Bangladesh keeps its payment commitment. Sources said both parties are engaged in discussion to resolve some issues related to coal cost and plant capacity calculations. These are the key reasons behind the difference between "claimed" and "admitted" dues. When contacted, an Adani Power spokesperson confirmed the payments but didn't share details on "claimed" and "agreed" dues stating these discussions are private. The 2017 power supply deal between Adani Power and Bangladesh had come in for scrutiny after the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government last year. Interim government, led by Nobel Peace prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, called for the formation of a high-level committee, comprising energy and legal experts, to re-examine the power purchase agreement (PPA). Under the 2017 deal, Adani Power's Godda power plant in Jharkhand was to supply 100 per cent of the electricity generated from burning coal, to Bangladesh for a period of 25 years. After payment defaults, Adani had cut supplies by half in November 2024. It restored full electricity supply, which is around 1,600 MW, in March after the country reduced liabilities. Bangladesh stepped up repayments from July last year, clearing monthly dues. This came after the country suffered from increased power shortages in rural areas. Struggling economy Bangladesh has been struggling to generate sufficient dollar revenues to cover the cost of essential imports such as electricity, coal, and oil. Its foreign currency reserves declined amid months of student-led protests and political unrest, which culminated in the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. The interim government that succeeded her sought an additional $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on top of the existing $4.7 billion bailout package. Adani's power deal with Bangladesh was one of the many under Sheikh Hasina, which the current interim government has called opaque. Besides Adani Power, other Indian state-owned firms also sell power to Bangladesh, including NTPC and PTC India Ltd.

MP Congress Chief Jitendra Patwari Booked For 'Bribing' Man To Claim He Was Fed Faeces
Last Updated: According to Madhya Pradesh Police, the claim of being fed human excreta turned out to be fake as they were made on "Jitu Patwari's demand." Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitendra Patwari is facing legal trouble after being accused of bribing a villager to falsely claim he was forced to eat human excreta. State police have filed a case based on an affidavit in which the villager alleged that some Congress leaders took him to Patwari, who then, offering a bribe, persuaded him to make the claim against the sarpanch of Mungaoli village. Earlier on June 25, Patwari posted a video on social media platform X showing him sitting with two brothers who alleged one of them was fed human excreta. Along with the video, the Congress leader posted a caption, blaming the BJP-led state government. — Jitendra (Jitu) Patwari (@jitupatwari) June 25, 2025 In the over 8-minute clip, he claimed a youth from the Lodhi community was targeted simply for asking for a ration slip. 'Prime Minister Ji, @BJP4MP The jungle rule of power is crossing the limits of anarchy! A youth from the Lodhi community had 'human excrement" stuffed in his mouth just because he asked for a 'ration slip"! ," Patwari tweeted in Hindi. In response to the FIR, Patwari 'welcomed" the move, remaining firm at the villager's claim and his criticism of the ruling government's handling of the incident. The Congress leader alleged that the accused are supporters of BJP MLA Brijendra Yadav which is why the DGP and the Chief Minister Mohan Yadav are not taking any action in the matter. 'It is alleged that since the accused are supporters of @BJP4India MLA Brijendra Yadav, that's why @DGP_MP and @CMMadhyaPradesh are not allowing any action to be taken?," Patwari further wrote on X. Recalling the incident in which a tribal youth was urinated upon in the state, he questioned, 'Why does #BJP consider Dalits, backward classes, and tribals as its enemies in Madhya Pradesh?." 'In this same Madhya Pradesh, a shameful incident of urinating on the head of a tribal youth has already taken place! Why does #BJP consider Dalits, backward classes, and tribals as its enemies in Madhya Pradesh?," he added. Slamming the BJP-led government, Patwari alleged that the law and order situation in the state has 'completely collapsed" and the people 'want freedom from this jungle rule! " 'The law and order in Madhya Pradesh have completely collapsed, yet @DrMohanYadav51 remains the Home Minister with arrogance! Meanwhile, the people of Madhya Pradesh now want freedom from this jungle rule! ," he wrote while concluding his post. According to Madhya Pradesh Police, the claim of being fed human excreta turned out to be fake as they were made on 'Jitu Patwari's demand." 'Later, he (the villager) said that the allegations about this were false, and he made this allegation on Jitu Patwari's demand… Based on this, a case has been filed against Jitu Patwari and his aides under various sections of BNS," news agency ANI quoted SP Vineet Kumar Jain as saying. News agency PTI reported that Mungavali police station in-charge Joginder Singh alleged that Patwari tried to mislead by sharing a video on social media to spread animosity in the society, instigate fighting among caste communities and disrupt peace. Singh said the complainant stated that he had been beaten up but denied that he was fed faeces. The complainant, in the FIR, has claimed Patwari promised him a motorcycle and said he would take care of his family, PTI reported. Reacting to the case filed against him, Jitendra Patwari said he would continue to raise his voice for the oppressed. 'The opposition should fulfil its responsibility when there are atrocities on the farmers, Dalits and the government should take it positively and take action. The government, on the contrary, commits a sin which is not its duty," news agency ANI quoted Patwari as saying. The Congress leader further said the FIR against him has once again exposed the 'dictatorship" of the ruling forces and their efforts to suppress the voice of the victims, PTI reported. 'This matter is not limited to just one FIR but is part of a deep conspiracy of pressure and manipulation by the ruling party, which is being hatched to defame the opposition leaders and bury the truth," PTI quoted him as saying. Patwari further pointed out that two days after the matter made headlines, the youth retracted his statement and claimed in an affidavit to the collector that he had made false allegations at his behest. Patwari alleged that the pressure of CM Mohan Yadav's government is visible behind the youth's affidavit and FIR. 'The way this whole matter turned around overnight shows the misuse of power and influence by the ruling party," he added. About the Author First Published:
