When one talks of CM face, only Eknath Shinde comes to mind: Sena leader Kayande
Addressing a party event here, Kayande said the Mahayuti government returned to power last year only because of two factors – the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, the flagship scheme of the earlier government, and the then CM Shinde. Mahayuti parties battling each other during poaching spree
Mumbai: The three Mahayuti parties, which are on a poaching spree from opposition parties ahead of local body polls across Maharashtra later this year, are in some cases battling with each other for local leaders in various districts. Leaders from the ruling alliance believe that the competition will only increase as the polls near. Mumbai, India – 18, June 2025: Former Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil Granddaughter-in Law, Jayashri Patil join BJP in the presence of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, and BJP Maharashtra State president Chandrakant Bawankule, BJP minister Chandrakant Patil, at BJP office, Nariman point, in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. (Photo by Bhushan Koyande/HT Photo) For instance, Jayashree Patil, the granddaughter-in-law of former chief minister and the late Congress leader Vasantdada Patil, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last week. A day earlier, the Shiv Sena (UBT) Nashik city chief, Sudhakar Badgujar, joined the party in the presence of senior BJP leaders in Mumbai. Both leaders, who are believed to have strongholds in their respective districts, were willing to join Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, but it was the BJP that managed to woo them, according to leaders aware of the developments. These aren't one-off cases. Badgujar's close aide and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader from Nashik, Vilas Shinde, is expected to join Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena soon. Vilas Shinde was willing to switch to the BJP, along with Badgujar, but Eknath Shinde succeeded in convincing him—and at least eight other former corporators—to join his party. Earlier this week, the Shinde-led Sena inducted 22 former corporators from various parties, including the NCP and BJP, apart from the opposition Congress in Kolhapur. The BJP's local leadership in Kolhapur is said to be unhappy over the poaching, said a party insider. In April, four former MLAs, along with former corporators and key office bearers from various parties, joined the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Many of them, including former MLA Vilasrao Jagtap, were in the BJP earlier. Insiders from the Mahayuti parties admitted that this poaching leads to a tussle and uneasiness between local leaders and party workers. 'It will grow further during the local body polls,' said a BJP leader, requesting anonymity. 'This, however, is expected by the workers, as we are used to such turmoil in politics because of the splits in the Shiv Sena and NCP in 2022 and 2023. Local workers and leaders from the BJP and NCP or Shiv Sena and NCP have been fighting against each other for years, but it was not the case between the Shiv Sena and the BJP. Most of these leaders and former corporators are joining parties convenient to them to get the candidature in the local body polls.' A Shiv Sena leader added that the Mahayuti parties are trying to one-up each other while making political offers to leaders they want to poach. 'Like in the case of Jayashree Patil, she is believed to have gotten a better political offer, including nomination to the legislative council and relaxation in legal action against a local bank under her. Though she was ready to join the NCP, the BJP lured her with a better offer,' the leader said. Political analyst Hemant Desai said that the tussle between the Mahayuti parties will only increase further in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as the polls near. 'Shinde has already poached most of the Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators, and could demand more seats on that basis from the BJP. Similarly, the two parties are at loggerheads in Thane for political clout. This will happen between the Mahayuti parties in the districts where they are fighting for political power against each other,' he added. According to Shiv Sena leaders, corruption cases emerging against their leaders like Sanjay Shirsat and Sandipanrao Bhumre are part of the tussle between the two ruling parties. 'The cases could be used by other ruling parties to keep these leaders, who are a strong voice in their respective districts, in check during the local body polls,' said a Shiv Sena leader from Marathwada, requesting anonymity.

Unease in Sena(UBT) over third language
There seems to be growing unease in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) with several party functionaries wondering which way the party is heading. Party secretary Sanjay Lakhe Patil is the latest to quit the party. On Sunday, two former corporators also joined BJP in Mumbai. Several leaders who are still with the party as well as those who have quit are insisting that it is not just the lure for power but also a sort of lethargy in the party that has been a factor behind their decision. A Mumbai MP points out that no major attempt is being made in the Shiv Sena (UBT) to gain the support of the people on the ground. A classic case, he said, was the issue of the state government making Hindi a 'mandatory' third language. The party cadre thinks that the party should tap into the anger of the people over the issue but the leadership has not given any such directives to them, probably for the fear of losing north Indian voters in some areas. Shiv-Sena-chief-Uddhav-Thackeray-interacts-with-media-in-Mumbai-Satish-Bate-HT-photo 'In the recent meeting addressed by Uddhavji, we were waiting for some directives to start an agitation but there was nothing. Our cadre likes action on ground, not just statements on news channels and tweets by top leaders. It won't be surprising if more people line up outside the offices of Shinde-led Sena or BJP as civic polls come closer,' he lamented. Ajit Pawar toils in Baramati Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar's decision to contest election for the post of director of Malegaon cooperative sugar factory in his Baramati assembly constituency after four decades has surprised many. He is trying to retain control over the cooperative factory of sugarcane growers and is locked in a triangular contest with a rival panel led by Chandrarao Tawre, a traditional political rival of Pawar family and a third panel supported by his uncle, Sharad Pawar. His speeches at the campaign meetings in which he said he would be the chairman of the factory and how he can get the work done due to his clout in the government have been widely circulated. His close aides say Ajit is wary of his uncle's moves to defeat his panel to show that Ajit is losing his hold over Baramati. Recently, in Solapur his party's MLA lost control of the local sugar factory to a rival in NCP (SP), leading to the narrative by the latter that the assembly victory of NCP was a fluke and the real mandate of the people was visible in the sugar factory election since they were held without EVMs. Clearly, Ajitdada doesn't want something like this happening in his backyard and hence is sweating it out in the middle of the monsoon. Juicy tales In the 80s, a grand wedding of Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil at Malshiras in Solapur had become a huge talking point. Vijaysinh's father Shankarrao Mohite-Patil was a major name among the bigwigs in cooperative sugar industry and a leading politician from western Maharashtra. Apparently, thousands of people were invited for the wedding feast. What had become a huge talking point was a story that a well was virtually turned into huge pot to make sharbat by putting huge quantities of lemon juice, sugar and ice in it. Decades later, Dhairyasheel Mohite-Patil who is now MP from Madha and belongs to Sharad Pawar led NCP (SP) has clarified about these tales. Dhairyasheel, nephew of Vijaysinh, recently said the lemon-juice-in-well story was just a rumour. 'Was it even practically possible? It was a story made up for sensational news,' he said while speaking to a YouTube channel. He said his grandfather had indeed invited thousands of people since they were supporters and voters who had been supporting them for years. 'It was just his way of expressing gratitude,' he insisted. The aghori way A slanging match between Shiv Sena minister Bharat Gogawale and NCP leaders in Raigad has revealed something that has been talked about in political circles for the past couple of years. Shiv Sena and NCP are locked in a bitter tussle over guardian minister's post in Raigad district. In that connection, NCP leaders released a video reportedly showing Gogawale conducting what they claimed was some rituals with sadhus from the aghori sect, an ascetic sect known for unconventional practices. They alleged that Gogawale conducted these rituals to win elections as well as to get the guardian ministership. Gogawale denied the claims, saying he was conducting a regular puja. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut dragged deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde into the controversy alleging he was also interested in such practices and referred to Shinde's frequent trips to Kamakhya temple in Assam. In any case, the leanings of politicians towards tantrik or other rituals in pursuit of power is a tale as old as time.

Shinde has shown 'real Shiv Sena', says Amit Shah; Raut rubbishes claim
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has shown the "real Shiv Sena" to everybody, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said, drawing a sharp reaction from the Shiv Sena (UBT). Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday claimed Shah's remark had rubbed salt into the wounds of Marathi people. Shah made the remark on Friday while acknowledging the presence of Shinde at an event organised by the lobby grouping Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Agriculture (MACCIA) here. The Bal Thackeray-founded party split in June 2022 after Shinde rebelled and brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government under Uddhav Thackeray. Since then, the two factions have been engaged in an acrimonious battle to lay claim to the founder's legacy and be called the "real Shiv Sena". "Shinde has shown which is the real Shiv Sena to everybody," Shah said. The remarks come a day after both the Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray factions, now called Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT), respectively, celebrated the undivided party's foundation day. Meanwhile, taking a dig at Shah, Raut said calling Shinde's party the "real Shiv Sena" is akin to saying the Republican Party in the US belongs to Ramdas Athawale. "Everyone knows Amit Shah owns Shinde's party. He says Shinde's outfit is the real Shiv Sena. It is like saying the Republican Party in the US belongs to Ramdas Athawale. US President Donald Trump belongs to the Republican Party, and Athawale, who is a minister in the Modi government, heads the Republican Party of India (A)," the Sena (UBT) MP told reporters. He claimed that despite all efforts, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is standing tall, and this is frustrating the ruling alliance. In polls held in November last year for the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena won in 57 constituencies, while the Sena (UBT) could clinch only 20 seats. In 36 seats, the Shiv Sena candidate defeated Sena (UBT) contestants. The battle of the Senas is bound to get more fierce in the upcoming local body polls across the state, especially in Mumbai, the country's richest civic body, which was a bastion of the undivided Shiv Sena for many decades.
