This year, the knockout round won't come until the semifinals. Instead, the opening round of the derby will feature all eight hitters competing, and the top four performers will advance to the semifinals. Players will then be seeded based on their home runs in the first round.
The longest home run will be used as a first-round tiebreaker.
There will also be a new pitch limit this year. Last year, pitchers could essentially throw as many pitches to the batter in their allowed time per round, but each round will end after a maximum number of pitches or when the allowed time runs out.
Other rules include: The first two rounds of the derby will last three minutes, and the final round will last two minutes.
Each batter gets one 45-second timeout, but they can't be used during bonus periods.

USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Tuli Tuipulotu in focus
The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 49 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC All-American defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu. Position: Defensive line Years played at USC: 2020-2022 Career highlights: Tuipulotu emerged as an immediate contributor on USC's defensive line as a true freshman in 2020. That year, he played alongside his older brother, Marlon. With Marlon off to the NFL in 2021, the younger Tuipulotu stepped up to help fill the void, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors. In 2022, however, Tuipulotu took things to an entirely new level. That season, he recorded a remarkable 13.5 sacks, the most of any player in the country. In addition, he had 46 total tackles and two forced fumbles. Tuipulotu was named a Unanimous All-American and won Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, the Morris Trophy (given to the top lineman in the Pac-12 Conference, and the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award. After USC: Following the 2022 season, Tuipulotu declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, where the Los Angeles Chargers selected him in the second round. It has not taken Tuipulotu long to emerge as a star at the professional level. After being named the PFWA All-Rookie team in 2023, he followed it up with an 8.5-sack campaign in 2024. Still just 22 years old, Tuipulotu appears to be one of the league's brightest young stars on the defensive line.

Jeff Kent was one of the more underrated hitters in the last quarter-century of baseball. He even won the NL MVP for the San Francisco Giants in 2000. Now, his son is trying to follow in his footsteps. Kaeden Kent is draft eligible. The shortstop at Texas A&M could be chosen in the draft that gets underway on Sunday. Advertisement The 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior started every game at shortstop for the Aggies this season. He's a legitimate prospect, having batted .279 with 13 doubles, 13 homers and 49 RBI. The only question is whether he signs or goes back to school for one more year. That'll depend likely on the money on the table, the team that takes him and what he feels he'd be going back to in the collegiate ranks. 2025 MLB Home Run Derby participants ranked by most likely to win
Jazz leaves the yard again! 🎷🎷 The 2025 Home Run Derby is set to take place Monday at 8 p.m. ET at Truist Park in Atlanta, and with no past champions in the field of eight, we're guaranteed to have a new winner for the fourth year in a row. In fact, only one of the participants has even been in a past derby, and that's Matt Olson of the home-town Braves, was last participated in 2021. So, there's perhaps even more unpredictability than usual with this field, which should make for an exciting finish. Here's a ranking of the field along with odds on a winner from BetMGM. 8. Jazz Chisholm Jr. (+1400) If Chisholm gets in a groove, he can be dangerous. It's just hard to project a strong finish in a field of superior power hitters. 7. Junior Caminero (+1000) If nothing else, Caminero will be a ton of fun to watch in this competition. I'm just not sure the 22-year-old's swing is ready to go the distance. 6. Matt Olson (+550) There have been other years I would have picked Olson to win the derby. This just doesn't feel like one of those years as Olson steps in as a replacement for injured teammate Ronald Acuña Jr. 5. Byron Buxton (+900) With the second-longest home run hit in 2025, I'm confident saying Buxton will hit a ball to the stars in this competition. But will he get a hold of enough balls to keep up? James Wood (+475) With his opposite-field power, Wood easily has the lowest pull percentage of any player in this field. I have questions about how well that will bode in this kind of competition. 2. Oneil Cruz (+310) Cruz has the best barrel and hard hit percentages of any player in the field, and leads the majors in average exit velocity. Cal Raleigh (+360) Raleigh has five hits this month, and they've all been home runs.
