Indonesia confirms US warship's passage through Straits of Melaka
JAKARTA: Indonesia's military said Saturday that the United States (US) aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was transiting the Straits of Melaka in line with international maritime law when it was last detected last week.
The vessel was travelling from the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Singapore Strait and the Straits of Melaka, the Indonesian Armed Forces Information Centre (Puspen TNI) said.
"The ship was exercising its right of transit passage under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)," the centre's head, Major General Kristomei Sianturi, stated in a statement.
He noted that the convention allows foreign warships to pass through international straits without prior notification, provided they do not pose a threat to the security of coastal states.
The statement came in response to public concern after a video showing the vessel near Aceh province on June 17 circulated widely on local social media, amid rising tensions in the Middle East involving Israel and Iran.
According to the Indonesian navy, the USS Nimitz was last detected with its automatic identification system (AIS) active in waters north of Belawan, near Medan in North Sumatra, on Tuesday.

Sandakan jamboree draws 355 scouts, Indonesian Community Learning Centres

SANDAKAN: 355 scouts, including 114 scout leaders from 17 schools around Sandakan, took part in the Sandakan District Scouts Jamboree at Gilwell Scouts Nature Park Training Centre here recently. Several scouts from Kinabatangan and Tungku, Lahad Datu also joined the camp, which was organised by the Sandakan Malaysian Scouts Association. The participation of Indonesian Pramuka members from six Community Learning Centres (CLCs) in Sandakan added a unique element to this year's jamboree. Throughout the event, the Sandakan Rover Scouts team conducted various hands-on activities, including building water filters, baking twisted bread (roti lilit), bandaging techniques, setting up temporary tents, building campfires, compass navigation and archery. A participant from SJKC Chi Hwa, Aldrich Lam Zhen Jet, said the jamboree was an excellent experience where he gained new knowledge and made new friends. A cultural night competition was also held, showcasing various traditional dances performed by participants in colourful traditional attire. The Indonesian folk dance performed by CLC Prolific won the secondary school category, while SJKC Chi Hwa emerged champion in the primary school category with their fan dance performance. The third day of the jamboree carried the theme Wildlife Wellbeing, featuring exhibitions by the Sabah Wildlife Department and the Wildlife Junior Rangers, as well as a talk on human-wildlife conflict. The wildlife poster drawing competition saw Nur Aniesyah Danieyah Herman from SM St. Michael Sandakan winning top honours. 'This theme is very relevant to the current situation, which shows a growing trend of human-wildlife conflict,' said Jamboree Camp Commander Mohd Razali Kamlon. The three-day jamboree concluded with a closing ceremony officiated by Sandakan Zone 1 Area Commissioner, Ts. Mohd Sofiee Basrih. Navy rescues Indonesian fishermen adrift at sea
IPOH: The Royal Malaysian Navy has rescued two Indonesian fishermen who were adrift at sea for three days. A spokesman from the Navy's western fleet command in Lumut said that the fishermen are aged 23 and 25 and added that both were rescued on Monday (June 23) night. Their boat suffered an engine failure, leaving them adrift in rough seas since June 21. They had been at sea since June 19 to catch fish, according to the spokesman on Tuesday (June 24). The fishermen attempted to manually move their boat, reaching Pulau Jarak, about 72km from Kuala Perak, at midnight on Tuesday (June 24). Navy personnel stationed on the island assisted the fishermen, offering temporary shelter, food, basic help, and repairing their boat engine. "We've informed the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency about the incident for further action," the spokesman says. A Navy vessel, KM Malawali, escorted the fishermen out to sea. "We advise the maritime community to ensure their vessels are in good condition to prevent incidents," the spokesman added

Indonesia Probes Second Bomb Threat On Saudia Hajj Flight

The threat, made on Saturday via voice communication routed through a Virtual Private Network (VPN)-based radio system, prompted an emergency landing in North Sumatra. bootstrap slideshow The affected flight, Saudia flight SVA 5688, operating the Jeddah-Muscat-Surabaya route, was carrying 376 Hajj pilgrims from East Java and 11 crew members. A joint inspection involving the military, police, and other agencies found no explosives or suspicious items on board, according to the Armed Forces Information Centre (Puspen TNI). 'By 7.15 pm, the screening process was completed with no threats detected,' said the centre's head, Major General Kristomei Sianturi, in a statement. The flight resumed at 3 am local time on Sunday after the aircraft was declared safe.
