Rihanna reveals how late father Ronald Fenty inspired her to raise sons
The 37-year-old singer - who has sons RZA, three, and Riot, 23 months, with her partner A$AP Rocky, and they have another child on the way - lost her dad, Ronald Fenty, on May 30 aged 70, but she has thanked her late parent for "preparing" her to have two sons.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at The Smurfs premiere in Los Angeles, she said: "I've always dreamed of what type of grandfather he would be to them, because of the favourite parts of my dad.
"It prepared me for having two boys, really.
"The adventurous side of me, the outside side of me, the daredevil - it's how I want to raise them.
"I want them to be outside and in nature. No tablet babies."
Rihanna admitted the best part of her childhood was exploring outdoors "barefoot and free".
She added: "That was the funnest part of my life and my childhood, running around outside barefoot and free.
"You don't get to do that anymore."
It was recently revealed Rihanna's father died of cancer and other serious illnesses.
According to a death certificate obtained by TMZ, Ronald's death certificate listed acute respiratory failure, pancreatic cancer and aspiration pneumonia - a bacterial lung infection - as well as two kidney conditions, acute renal failure and acute tubular necrosis.
Rihanna had endured a rocky relationship with her father when she was growing up, and was at the centre of a public battle with him when he spoke to the press after she was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009.
However, the in the years that followed, she noted that she had "repaired" her relationship with her father and had to learn to "come to terms" with things that had gone in in the past.
She told Oprah Winfrey: "He taught me everything, and as awful as he was to my mom, at times, it didn't compare to how great he was as a father.
"And I had to come to terms with that, and I was able to close that gap with him."

‘American Idol' boss Robyn Kaye, husband executed in their $7 million home in gory double murder
A boss on 'American Idol' and her husband were executed in a suspected double murder inside their $4.5 million ($6.9 million AUD) Los Angeles home, cops said. Robin Kaye, an award-winning music supervisor for the hit competition show, was found slaughtered along with her musician husband, Thomas Deluca, after an apparent break-in at their house in the upscale Encino neighborhood, a Los Angeles Police Department source told TMZ. Both were 70. The couple's bodies were found during a 'welfare check' Monday afternoon after they had not been heard from in four days, the LAPD said. Both victims had what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the head. 'There is no suspect information at this time. LAFD responded and pronounced the victims deceased at scene. The motive is unknown. The investigation is ongoing,' the department told The Post. Kaye was found dead in the pantry, and Deluca in the bathroom, NBC Los Angeles reported. Officers also found blood in the entryway and a broken window, which the killer possibly used to get inside. The home was apparently not ransacked, pointing away from the possibility of a burglary, authorities told TMZ. Aerial footage of the house from ABC 7 showed what looked like a smashed sliding glass door. The cops were called to the house on Thursday after neighbors spotted a suspicious person hopping the fence, but officers found no evidence of foul play. 'We didn't see or hear anything. My renter called 911 on Thursday because she saw somebody hopping the fence,' neighbor Amee Faggen told ABC 7. Kaye had worked on American Idol for 15 seasons, according to her IMDB page, and won several Guild of Music Supervisors Awards. She worked as the music supervisor on 'Idol' for at least 15 seasons, according to her IMDB page, and she won multiple Guild of Music Supervisors Awards for her work on the show. Kaye also worked on 'Lip Sync Battle,' Miss USA and Miss Universe, among other shows. 'We are devastated to hear of Robin and her dear husband, Tom's, passing,' an 'American Idol' spokesperson told Variety. 'Robin has been a cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009 and was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her. Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time.' Kaye and Deluca's house last sold for around $4.5 million in 2023, according to Zillow. It was previously owned by rapper Juice WRLD, who died of an accidental overdose in 2019. While most homes along the block are fairly isolated, the couple's is one of the largest and appears to be the most secure, surrounded by huge walls topped with security spikes. Neighbors in the Encino neighborhood told NBC Los Angeles that they've been plagued by frequent break-ins and burglaries over the years. In late May, 'Black-ish' star Anthony Anderson's home was broken into while he was at a charity event. One week later, a jewelry store was robbed by burglars who used blowtorches to open a safe. Rihanna reveals her sons 'both love music'
Rihanna's sons "love music". The 37-year-old star has Riot, 23 months, and RZA, three, with rapper A$AP Rocky, and Rihanna admits that her sons have already developed a passion for music. The chart-topping singer told E! News: "Both of them love music. Like it's insane because I'm like, 'Is that me or is that you, Rocky?' They love instruments. They love music." Rihanna suggested that Rocky is the biggest musical influence on at least one of her sons, revealing that Riot has already developed a love of freestyling. The Work hitmaker - who is currently pregnant with her third child - shared: "That's definitely a Rocky thing, not me." Rihanna has relished the challenge of raising her sons, but she recently confessed that she's "always wanted" a baby girl. The singer has remained tight-lipped about the sex of her unborn child, although she admitted that she'd love to have a little girl one day. Asked about the sex of her unborn baby, Rihanna told Extra: "You have to wait and see. Oh, my gosh, are you guys going to be so hurt if it's a boy?' Extra's Terri Seymour then replied: "I think we're secretly hoping you have a girl … because you've got your two sweet, sweet boys." Rihanna subsequently admitted that she'd love to have a baby girl. She explained: "I've always wanted a girl. God knows best, right? And I love my boys." Rihanna also confirmed that her unborn baby's name will begin with the letter R, describing it as a family "tradition". She said: "I mean, of course. It's tradition at this point." Rihanna has enjoyed huge success with make-up and lingerie brands, having put her music career on the back-burner in recent years. However, the singer confessed in 2024 that motherhood has changed her entire approach to fashion and style. Speaking to Interview magazine, she explained: "It's more like I spend my time getting the kids dressed to death, and then I'm like, 'What's the most comfortable outfit to wear around them? What's not going to feel uncomfortable on their face or on their body or make me feel like I can't hold them properly?' Moms are lazy dressers in real life."
