
Cosmic Broken 'Bone' Caused by Pulsar Hit-and-Run, NASA Satellite Reveals

The Milky Way has a broken "bone"—and it was caused by a collision with a pulsar, a rapidly rotating neutron star, speeding through it at some 1–2 million miles per hour.
This is the diagnosis of a U.S.-based team of astronomers, led from Northwestern University, who studied the cosmic fracture in G359.13142-0.20005 (also known as "the Snake"), one of a number of enormous, elongated structures found near the center of our galaxy.
Located in the constellation Sagittarius, some 26,000 light-years from the Earth, the Snake is a 230 light-year-long "Galactic Center Filament."
The team examined the Snake not with a hospital X-ray machine, but NASA's Chandra X-ray observatory (as well as the MeerKAT radio array in South Africa).
"We argue that the major kink is created by a fast-moving object punching into the Snake, distorting its magnetic structure, and producing X-ray emission," the researchers wrote in their paper.

The Snake is one of the largest and brightest of all the Milky Way's Galactic Center Filaments. These bone-like structures, which can be seen in radio wave observations, are threaded by magnetic fields which they run parallel to.
The radio emissions from these galactic bones are caused by energized particles spiraling along the magnetic fields.
In the newly-released image—which includes X-ray data from Chandra in blue and radio data from MeerKAT in gray—the fracture can be clearly seen in the otherwise uninterrupted length of G359.13142-0.20005.
Combining the Chandra and MeerKAT observations with data from the Very Large Array, a radio observatory in the Plains of San Agustin, Mexico, revealed a source of both radio waves and X-rays at the site of the fracture.
In the inset, the pulsar that is likely responsible for these emissions is highlighted. Additional X-rays may be being emitted from the collision site by electrons and positrons that have been accelerated to high energies.
Pulsars—like other neutron stars—are the dense remnants of massive stars that collapsed and went supernova. They can receive a powerful kick from these explosions, sending them careening through space at great speed.
The astronomers believe that when the runaway pulsar smashed into the middle of the Snake, it distorted the filament's magnetic field, causing the resulting radio signal to be deformed as well.
"A secondary kink is argued to be induced by the impact of the high-velocity object producing the major kink," the researchers wrote.

Maglev technology has been developed in Japan since 2002 and testing has also taken place in China where one line achieved speeds of over 620 miles per hour, faster than many commercial aircraft. Maryland Governor Wes Moore was an enthusiastic backer of the project, and in April visited a team working on the technology in Japan where he said: "You have in me, and you have in our team, very excited partners to be able to continue to push forward... We like moving fast, and 315 miles per hour feels about right." Federal figures show nearly $27 million had been spent on the Maglev project in Maryland. Processed Food May Raise Lung Cancer Chances—Scientists

A new large-scale study has found that people who consume higher amounts of ultra-processed foods (UPF) face a significantly increased risk of developing lung cancer. Published in the medical journal Thorax, researchers from Chongqing University in China analyzed the dietary patterns of over 100,000 adults and found that those with the highest intake of UPF had a 41 percent greater chance of being diagnosed with the disease. Newsweek contacted the American Lung Association for comment via email on Sunday. Among participants, those in the highest quartile of UPF intake faced a markedly higher risk of developing lung cancer, even after researchers adjusted for smoking, socioeconomic status, and other lifestyle factors. UPF in the study included packaged snacks, instant noodles, sweetened beverages, processed meats, frozen meals, and industrial baked goods. Notably, the increased risk applied to both major forms of the disease, non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer (NSCLC and SCLC). The researchers found that even after accounting for smoking, which remains the leading cause of lung cancer, diet remained an independent risk factor. The study concluded that higher consumption of UPF is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, NSCLC, and SCLC. Although additional research in other populations and settings is warranted, these findings suggest the health benefits of limiting intake. Public health experts have long warned that UPF, while convenient and inexpensive, carry long-term health risks that are often underestimated. Critics point out that these foods are not only nutrient-poor, but often high in sugar, sodium, and additives that may interfere with normal metabolic and immune functions. BMJ Group, publisher of the British Medical Journal, noted that as this is an observational study, "no firm conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect," with researchers unable to factor in smoking intensity, which may have been influential. "In addition, dietary information was collected only once, so couldn't account for changes over time, and the number of cancer diagnoses was small." Although the study was observational and cannot confirm a direct cause-and-effect relationship, researchers said the strength of the association warrants serious attention. Some experts, however, cautioned against drawing firm conclusions from observational data alone, urging further research to explore underlying mechanisms. "I'm well aware that studies with other kinds of methodology are going on—I just wish that researchers would concentrate more on those other types of research, instead of repeatedly cranking the handle of doing studies like this one." What Happens Next The study may intensify calls for clearer food labeling, public education campaigns, and stronger policy action to reduce the dominance of UPF in the global food supply. Future studies could examine specific ingredients and production processes to determine what aspects of UPF may contribute most to cancer risk. In the meantime, health authorities are likely to renew efforts to promote diets based on minimally processed, whole foods—such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins—as a way to reduce cancer and other chronic disease risks.

NASA, SpaceX punch through weather threat for Crew-11 launch
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX was back one day after a weather-related scrub and threaded the needle amid threatening clouds to send up the Crew-11 mission to the International Space Station. A Falcon 9 rocket topped with the Crew Dragon Endeavour lifted off from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39-A at 11:43 a.m. Eastern time carrying NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Platonov to space. 'I have no emotions but joy right now. That was absolutely transcendent — ride of a lifetime,' said Cardman, making her first trip to space. 'Boy, it's great to be back in orbit again,' Fincke added as he returned for his fourth trip to orbit. 'Thank you to SpaceX and NASA to get us here. What a ride.' The first-stage booster for this mission made its third flight and touched back down for what was SpaceX's final use of Landing Zone 1 at nearby Cape Canaveral Space Force Station sending a sonic boom across the Space Coast. The quartet shot through a break amid darkening clouds and into space. The previous day, they had their launch scrubbed with one minute and seven seconds on the countdown clock when a storm cell opened up right over the pad. They actually had to put on raincoats over their spacesuits as they made their way out of the capsule for what turned out to be just a one-day delay. The quartet, who arrived to KSC on Saturday, were back Friday getting prepped for launch, donning their spacesuits after 7 a.m. at the Neil Armstrong Operations & Checkout Building. They made their walkout after 8 a.m. to ride over to launch pad in black Teslas with license plates that read 'Live,' 'Laugh' and 'Launch.' By 9 a.m. the had made their way up the launch tower to climb back on board their spacecraft. With an hour to go, all were prepped in their seats with the hatch closed awaiting fueling and arming of the launch escape system. When it does launch, NASA Commercial Crew Program manager Steve Stich said it will be groundbreaking for NASA use of a commercial spacecraft. 'We worked very hard with SpaceX to complete all the reuse activities for this vehicle. We had certified the vehicles — the Dragons — for only five flights. Now, we've completed all that work, and we're really ready to go,' he said. It was the same Crew Dragon that flew the first astronauts for SpaceX back in 2020, now part of a stable of five crew-capable Dragons. With Crew-11's launch, SpaceX will have flown 74 humans across 19 missions in just over five years. The mission will relieve the Crew-10 members who have been on board the space station since mid-March, but won't undock until they complete a short handover period during with the space station population will grow from seven to 11. Crew-11 is targeting docking with the station around 3 a.m. Saturday after a 16-hour trip. The crew will be on the station for at least six months, but NASA could stretch the mission to as long as eight months. For its members, Cardman and Platonov are rookies while Yui is making his second trip having flown to the station a decade ago, and Fincke is making his fourth trip to space having last flown to the station as part STS-134, the last flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour, as well as two previous missions on Soyuz spacecraft. Cardman had originally been tapped to command the Crew-9 mission, but was bumped after NASA needed space on board to allow for the return flight to the two Boeing Starliner astronauts that were left behind on the station when their spacecraft was sent home without crew because of safety concerns. Fincke and Yui had both been training to fly future crewed missions of Starliner, but were shifted to this SpaceX mission as Boeing's beleaguered spacecraft continues to face delays. With their arrival to the station, the orbiting laboratory will have welcomed 290 people from 26 nations. The station will mark 25 years of continuous human presence in November having began Expedition 1 in 2020.
