China targets India's mfg sector, delays machinery delivery, pulls iPhone engrs

NEW DELHI: In what has the potential to disturb India's strong march in manufacturing, tensions with China have seen the neighbouring country delay delivery of critical machinery while ordering the pullout of some of its citizens from Indian factories, including those engaged in engineering and manufacturing jobs at Foxconn, Apple's contract manufacturer. This comes just as China has also put curbs on export of magnets to India that are used in making of automobile and electronic products. Sources said there has been a "massive pressure" at the operations of Foxconn in India, with the Taiwanese giant employing a "few hundred key Chinese personnel" at its factories in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. iPhone mfg schedule may be hit as China pulls out techies While their strength is less than 1% of employees, they play a key part in managing operations, including production and quality. With Chinese govt asking its citizens to pull out, it may create disturbance in production schedule of iPhones," a source said. Questions sent to officials of Apple and Foxconn in India did not get any response. Govt sources said the problem has been festering for the last few months and the companies, given the large global presence, have tapped some of their other operations for manpower. The situation is equally worrisome at the operations of top Chinese phone companies such as Oppo and Vivo, that have large manufacturing facilities in the country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I Saved R4,500 a Year by Doing This Simple Car Insurance Trick AutoTrends Learn More Undo "While the companies have limited Chinese officials in India, they are worried about 'what more' can follow after this step. Please remember that both Apple and the Chinese makers import a lot of components from China that are used to manufacture final products in India," the source said. It is understood that Indian govt is seized of the matter, and there are also speculations that 'China may be doing a tit-for-tat on India', especially as their corporate personnel have faced a lot of issues in getting business visas. "We intend to send a detailed report on the matter to the govt so that the issue is flagged off before it explodes into another crisis like the matter related to magnet supply," an industry source said. For Apple, India has emerged as a major production hub and the share of the company in India's export basket has grown severalfold in recent years and govt does not want any disruptions. Govt officials said that in the past China has often sought to block machinery to be used in key Indian factories after learning about the facility moving or coming up in India. These steps come at a time when companies are looking to diversify their production bases and are adding capacity in India, often at the expense of expanding in China or doing so at a slower pace. HC upholds maternity leave benefits of contractual staff

Cuttack: Orissa high court has upheld the maternity leave entitlement of a contractual employee while dismissing the state govt's appeal challenging the same, pointing out that discrimination based on employment status violates Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law. "Denying maternity benefits on the basis of nature of employment is abhorrent to the notions of humanity and womanhood," the bench of Justice Dixit Krishna Shripad and Justice M S Sahoo observed, while directing the govt to submit a compliance report to the registrar (judicial) of the court within eight weeks. On May 20, 2014, Anindita Mishra was appointed under the health and family welfare department on contractual basis. Her contract was regularly extended based on satisfactory performance. In Aug 2016, Mishra gave birth to a daughter. She applied for maternity leave from Aug 17, 2016 to Feb 12, 2017 and submitted her leave application along with a doctor's certificate following relevant guidelines of the finance department. However, the health department rejected her application on June 7, 2017, stating that as a contractual employee, she was not entitled to such benefits. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Challenging the decision, Mishra moved the HC the same year. On Aug 30, 2022, a single judge quashed the department's order and directed the govt to extend maternity leave benefits to her in accordance with the law, preferably within three months. The govt filed a writ appeal challenging the ruling. On June 24, the division bench of Justice Shripad and Justice Sahoo dismissed the appeal at the admission stage, stating that it lacked merit. "The single judge has rightly granted relief to the employee, and viewed from any angle, the same cannot be faltered," the bench noted in its order. "The contention that the benefits of maternity leave apply only to civil servants cannot be countenanced. Women employees for the purpose of availing such benefits constitute one homogenous class," the bench further observed.

Govt returns Rs 47.07cr to over 1.27L duped chit fund investors

1 2 Bhubaneswar: The state govt has restituted Rs 47.07 crore to 1,27,137 duped chit fund investors in the last one year, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed on Wednesday. In an indirect attack on the previous Naveen Patnaik govt, Majhi said only 2,79,109 victims had received refunds to the tune of Rs 119 crore during 2014-2024. "After the new govt assumed office in the state, under the direction of chief minister the process for refunding chit fund money has been simplified and decentralised to the district level. This has expedited the refund process, and in the past year, the state govt has returned Rs 47.07 crore to 1,26,137 small depositors," according to a statement from the chief minister's office (CMO). The CMO indicated that an additional 5 lakh small depositors would receive their refunds within 3 to 4 months. "For a decade from 2014 to 2024, only 2,79,109 small depositors had received a total refund of Rs 119 crore," the statement noted. Compensating chit fund victims was a crucial BJP electoral commitment last year. The BJP state president, Manmohan Samal, in Sept last year announced that the govt would reimburse defrauded chit fund victims within 18 months. Knowledge Knower Undo Following a Supreme Court directive in May 2014, the CBI investigated 44 companies, including the Kolkata-based Saradha Group and Odisha-based Seashore and Artha Tatwa groups. These firms allegedly collected roughly Rs 4,600 crore from gullible investors in the state. Prior to the 2014 assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the then-BJD govt set up a judicial commission and created a Rs 300 crore corpus fund to compensate affected small depositors. The commission, led by Justice M M Das, identified a large number of small depositors who lost Rs 10,000 or less. The commission's interim report to the state govt recommended refund for 4,97,844 small investors while identifying over 450 companies responsible for the Ponzi fraud. Last Dec, Majhi revealed at an event here that he too was a victim of chit fund schemes, stating he couldn't recover his money due to the complicated recovery process.
