Improvement works launched at Silver Beach in Cuddalore in an effort to get Blue Flag certification
Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare M.R.K. Panneerselvam laid the foundation stone for the improvement works on Sunday to be executed at a cost of ₹4 crore. The works will be executed by the Department of Environment and Forests and is expected to be completed in eight months.
Official sources said Silver Beach in Cuddalore is among the six beaches selected by the State Government for development as Blue Flag beaches for promotion of sustainable tourism. The other beaches are Thiruvanmiyur, Palavakkam and Uthandi in Chennai, Kulasekarapattinam (Tuticorin) and Keezhputhupattu (Villupuram).
According to an official, 'The objective is to reduce pollutants, responsibly manage solid waste and marine litter and promote sustainable development of the coastal regions. The certification is awarded based on 33 stringent criterial including environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environment management and conservation and safety and services in the beaches.'
The Blue Flag certification will lead to construction of environment-friendly temporary structures to promote tourism on Silver beach.. The moment a Blue Flag is hoisted on the beach it will be noticed by the Foundation for Environment Education in Copenhagen, Denmark, and propagated across the world for tourists to take note.
The beautification works include a jogging track, watch tower, LED streetlights, CCTV, improved parking facilities, comfort station complex and cafetaria. There will also be improved waste management systems, security arrangements for tourists, off-grid solar power plant, tourism information centre, and staff to explain the significance of the beach to tourists.
The work also includes a small-scale reverse osmosis plant, grey water treatment plant, modular toilets and changing rooms for tourists..
The official added, 'The Silver Beach is one of the major tourist destination in the district. Winning the certification will attract more tourists, leading to development and new jobs. Further, the local communities will be sensitised to the concept and its importance.'

Visakhapatnam: Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh revealed that apart from maintaining the Blue Flag Certification standards at Rushikonda beach, steps will be taken for the beautification of beach stretches. Visiting Rushikonda in Visakhapatnam on Thursday along with Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Visakhapatnam District Collector Harindhira Prasad and GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, the minister informed that few more Blue Flag beaches would be developed in Andhra Pradesh. He said that Blue Flag Beach Certification is an international level recognition given based on meeting several parameters. This will increase the revenue sources for the government and create employment opportunities to the locals. Further, the minister stated that they are focusing on facilities to be provided to the visitors at the beach stretches, including play zones for children and increased greenery, he informed. The Tourism Minister stressed that priority will be given to watersports, wellness centres, eco and adventure tourism. He said that the Visakhapatnam Port Authority built the international cruise terminal with all amenities and it has been decided to operate it for four times till September. Later, steps will be taken to operate the cruise 365 days, he added. Later, the minister interacted with students on how the tourism sector aids in providing employment opportunities. The session was organised in the presence of Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinviasa Rao, Sun International Institute Tourism and Management chairman and managing director Srikanth Jasti, and executive director Asha Jasti. The minister lauded the efforts of the institution's management and added that it stands as the top institution in Andhra Pradesh in the hospitality sector. In the days to come, he assured that efforts will be taken to set up a tourism university in Visakhapatnam. Speaking on the occasion, Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinviasa Rao remarked that students are now showing keen interest in pursuing tourism and hospitality course and appreciated the Sun International management for its commitment and dedication in steering the students towards achieving their goals.

Uttarakhand Government halts Char Dham Yatra owing to bad weather
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Thursday (July 3, 2025) that the State Government has decided to temporarily suspend the Char Dham Yatra owing to the bad weather conditions, noting that the safety of the pilgrims is the government's priority. "Considering the weather, the Char Dham yatra has been temporarily halted. In the future, we will proceed with the yatra in accordance with the weather. When the yatra is safe, it will continue... Our priority during the yatra is the safety of all pilgrims... Coastal road near Kappad damaged in sea erosion
The recent episodes of sea erosion, intensified with the onset of the monsoon, have swept away a major stretch of the scenic Kappad-Koyilandy road in Kozhikode district. Disrupting vehicular movement, nearly a one-kilometre stretch of the road leading to the Blue Flag-certified Kappad beach now remains damaged due to the ongoing sea surge. Families of fishermen along the coastal area complain that they are living in fear now with the worsening weather conditions and failed protective measures. Many who regularly used the coastal road for their daily commute between Kappad and Koyilandy harbour are now forced to rely on longer alternative routes, they say. A section of the local tourism facility operators along the coastal area has also been dragged into a crisis with the disrupted road connectivity. They say many are in a situation to leave the business or relocate to other places following safety concerns. 'It is impossible to protect this coastal road without a stronger seawall, built after scientifically assessing the nature of the surge and the character of the coastline. The Tourism department has a greater responsibility to push for further action,' says P. Mohammed, a local tourism entrepreneur. He points out that further delay will negatively impact the tourism prospects of the entire destination. Though the State government has recently sanctioned ₹12 crore for the seawall construction in the worst-affected area, the work is likely to be delayed further due to the destroyed road connectivity. Local administrators also feel that the sanctioned amount may not be sufficient to cover the actual requirements, including road renovation. 'Constructing a long seawall to cover all affected areas between Kappad and Koyilandy harbour is hardly a viable solution, considering the risky terrain. We believe that the speedy completion of the proposed coastal highway is the most practical solution,' says Chemanchery grama panchayat president Sathi Kizhakkayil. She adds that the dangerous sea surges every year make it difficult to propose any expensive road renovation projects.
