ORLANDO — Al Hilal's dream run at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup came to an end in the quarterfinals on Friday, as the Saudi giants fell 2-1 to Brazil's Fluminense at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
Despite their stunning 4-3 extra-time victory over Manchester City in the Round of 16, hailed as one of the greatest results in the tournament's history, Hilal could not overcome the reigning Copa Libertadores champions.
Goals from Gabriel Martinelli (40') and substitute Hercules Pereira (70') sealed Fluminense's win, while Marcos Leonardo (51') netted the lone goal for Hilal.
The result ends Al Hilal's run as the final Arab representative in the competition, following earlier exits by Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, Espérance de Tunis, and Al Ain in the group stage.
The loss also marked the first defeat under new head coach Simone Inzaghi, who had guided Hilal through four unbeaten matches since taking over in early June.Fluminense will now face the winner of Palmeiras vs Chelsea in the semifinals on July 8 in New York's MetLife Stadium.Al Hilal entered the match unchanged from their triumph over City, with newly signed striker Abderrazak Hamdallah starting on the bench. The team remained without several key players due to injury, including Aleksandar Mitrović and Salem Al-Dawsari.In a first half of few clear chances, Fluminense capitalized on a defensive error by João Cancelo, with Martinelli curling his shot past Yassine Bounou into the far corner in the 40th minute.Al Hilal nearly equalized in stoppage time through Kalidou Koulibaly's header, but their penalty appeal moments later was overturned after VAR review.Leonardo brought Al Hilal level early in the second half, pouncing on a loose ball in the box after a Koulibaly header. The Brazilian striker's fourth goal of the tournament briefly lifted the Saudi side, but Fluminense regained the lead in the 70th minute when Pereira slotted home after a headed pass from Samuel Xavier.Inzaghi responded by bringing on Hamdallah, but the Brazilian side maintained control and nearly extended their lead.Al Hilal, visibly fatigued after their extra-time battle against Manchester City, pushed for a late equalizer but couldn't find the breakthrough.Despite the loss, Al Hilal's performance in the tournament, especially the shock win over the Premier League champions, will be remembered as a historic moment in Saudi and Asian football.

FIFA Cuts Ticket Price to $13.40 for Club World Cup Semifinal Between Chelsea and Fluminense

FIFA cut standard ticket prices for the semifinal between Chelsea and Fluminense at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Tuesday to $13.40 from $473.90 earlier in the past week. FIFA has used dynamic pricing for the 63-game tournament. Standard ticket prices for Wednesday's semifinal between European champion Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in New Jersey start at $199.60. FIFA had dropped ticket prices to $11.15 for a quarterfinal in Orlando, Florida, between Fluminense and Al-Hilal, and in Philadelphia between Chelsea and Palmeiras. The dramatic drop in prices was first reported by The Athletic. Many matches during the tournament have had sparse crowds. Real Madrid has been an exception, drawing at least 60,000 for all five of its matches, including 76,611 for its quarterfinal win Saturday over Borussia Dortmund in New Jersey.

Paris Saint-Germain shut down Bayern Munich, reach CWC semis

ATLANTA: Desire Doué scored in the 78th minute, Ousmane Dembele added a second in stoppage time and Paris Saint-Germain sealed their place in the FIFA Club World Cup semifinals with a 2-0 quarterfinal win over Bayern Munich on Saturday in Atlanta. Pairs Saint-Germain played the closing minutes with just nine players after a pair of red cards and still added a goal to seal the victory. Referee Anthony Taylor dismissed Willian Pacho in the 82nd minute for his dangerous challenge on Bayern's Thomas Muller, and sent off Lucas Hernandez in the second minute of second-half stoppage time for an elbow in the direction of Raphael Guerreiro. But Doue and Dembele's first goals of the tournament were enough to seal a meeting in East Rutherford, N.J., on Wednesday with the winner of Saturday's second semifinal between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Gianluigi Donnarumma made five saves to keep PSG's fourth clean sheet of the tournament. Bayern exits the tournament after being held scoreless for the first time, on a day when they lost Josip Stanisic and Jamal Musiala to first-half injuries. It was still 11-on-11 when Doue took Joao Neves' pass, created some space near the edge of the penalty area, then unleashed a left-footed strike that found the bottom right corner as Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer slipped while trying to change direction. Dembele doubled the advantage on a stunning foray forward despite the numerical disadvantage and some brilliant setup work by Achraf Hakimi, who beat three defenders off the dribble. Hakimi then fed Dembele in stride for a first-time low finish that left Neuer little chance. Bayern thought they had a chance to pull a late goal back when Taylor whistled for a penalty even later in stoppage time, only to reverse his decision following a video review. Musiala departed on a stretcher at halftime after suffering a gruesome ankle injury following a tangle for the ball with Donnarumma that did not show any signs of ill intent. Even Donnaruma was distraught after seeing the extent of Musiala's injury, which came in the final seconds of the first half. Twelve minutes earlier, Stanisic exited with an apparent hamstring injury. Donnaruma made a pair of exceptional first-half saves. In the 27th minute, he sprung to his right to parry Michael Olize's goal-bound effort from just beyond the corner of the 6-yard box. In the 41st, he sprawled the opposite direction to keep Aleksandar Pavlovic's effort — an intended early cross that was inches in front of Musiala near the penalty spot — from bounding inside the right post. Neuer was also called into action during the first half, thwarting Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's effort from close range at the near post with an outstretched arm in the 32nd minute. Four minutes into the second half, he dove left to deny Bradley Barcola on the break.
