Hyundai sets new high-performance benchmark with IONIQ 6 N
Hyundai has officially unveiled the all-electric IONIQ 6 N at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, sending shockwaves through the high-performance EV world.
The new model builds on the success of the wildly impressive Ioniq 5 N, but takes it even further with clever updates to suspension geometry, immersive sound technology, and more precise drift control.
Hyundai Motor Company chief executive José Muñoz says the Ioniq 6 N was built to thrill and promises it will deliver even for the most diehard petrolheads.
'With Ioniq 6 N, Hyundai N aims to elevate its offerings, enticing drivers with electric powertrains that offer high-performance enthusiasts a thrilling new avenue to electrify their passion both on the road and the track,' José Muñoz said.
Under the hood (well, the floor), the Ioniq 6 N produces a substantial 478kW and 770 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds using N Launch Control. Flat out, it'll do 257km/h.
That kind of performance is backed up by some serious tech.
One standout is Hyundai's N e-Shift system, a clever bit of software that simulates the feel of a real motorsport-style gearbox, complete with close gear ratios and sharp, responsive shifts. It's designed to make EV driving feel more visceral and engaging, regardless of the mode you're in.
Drift mode has also been upgraded, now with finer customisation options depending on how confident (or brave) you are behind the wheel. It's all part of Hyundai N's goal to make the car more interactive and fun to drive.
According to Manfred Harrer, Hyundai's Executive Vice President, the 'Ioniq 6 N combines formidable power, sophisticated battery management, aerodynamic mastery and advanced suspension systems to deliver a compelling blend of speed, stability and comfort, setting new benchmarks in modern automotive engineering.'
Its aerodynamic design and advanced suspension work together to deliver a smooth, stable, and comfortable ride, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in modern electric car design.
The suspension has been specially tuned to sit lower and feel more planted than the Ioniq 5 N, giving drivers better control, sharper steering, and a more connected feel behind the wheel.
Hyundai has also added new electronically controlled dampers that adjust as you drive, helping the car stay smooth and stable whether you're cornering hard or just cruising.
There is even a new colour coming with the Ioniq 6 N, being called Performance Blue Pearl. It takes Hyundai N's signature colour and adds a pearlescent finish for extra depth and road presence.
The Ioniq 6 N is also getting its own range of N performance parts, inspired by Hyundai's motorsport programs. That means owners can personalise their car with track-focused upgrades and really lean into the brand's 'Corner Rascal' personality.
There is no word yet on Australian pricing or launch timing — Hyundai says that information will be revealed closer to the local release — but if the Ioniq 5 N is anything to go by, this one has serious potential to dominate.

Volvo Cars swings into loss on electric vehicles, tariffs
Volvo Cars announced on Thursday it had swung into loss in the second quarter, after it took an impairment charge for its electric cars, booked restructuring charges and dealt with a slower, tariff-troubled market. The net loss of 8.1 billion kronor ($830 million) was due to a 11.4-billion-kronor writedown in the value of its EX90 electric SUV and ES90 electric sedan due to production delays, higher development costs than planned and now US tariffs making sales there unprofitable. "Demand remains under pressure from the macroeconomic environment, tariff-related uncertainties and tougher competition," chief executive Hakan Samuelsson said in the quarterly earnings report. The Sweden-based manufacturer owned by China's Geely also took a 1.4-billion-kronor restructuring charge, having announced 3,000 job cuts in May. The group had booked a net profit of 5.7 billion kronor in the same quarter last year. Excluding exceptional items, it estimated its quarterly operating profit at 2.9 billion kronor, down from 8.0 billion last year. Retail sales of cars dropped by 12 percent by volume, while revenue fell by eight percent to 93.5 billion kronor due to lower volumes and the higher value of the Swedish kronor. That beat the analyst consensus of 88.2 billion kronor compiled by Bloomberg. Shares in Volvo Cars shot more than seven percent higher as trading got underway on the Stockholm stock exchange. Volvo Cars announced in April an 18-billion-kronor cost-cutting plan, part of efforts to navigate a car market buffeted by US tariffs and a costly switch to electric vehicles. It said then it would adapt to the increasing regionalisation in trade. And on Wednesday it announced it would begin building its XC60 SUV in the United States next year to avoid the 25-percent US tariffs applied to its vehicles. The company said it would no longer provide financial guidance for 2025 and 2026 due to "external developments and increased uncertainties". ef/rl/gil

Axed F1 boss Christian Horner linked with bombshell move
Christian Horner is jobless for the first time since 2004 after his brutal Red Bull sacking last week. The 51-year-old is now on gardening leave for the rest of the year and will be weighing up his options from January 2026. Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. Rumours have been swirling around over the Brit's potential destinations - including a shock move to Ferrari, The Sun reports. Reports in Italian and German media begun claiming in May that Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur's position is under threat. Vasseur hit out at the reports and said they were 'disrespectful' and 'very harsh'. But German outlet BILD has added fuel to the fire, claiming that Ferrari had made 'informal' contact with Horner. Horner dismissed the report - but speculation will continue to grow as the weeks go by with him sitting on the sidelines. Come the Belgian Grand Prix later this month, Horner will be missing from the F1 paddock for the first time in nearly 21 years. And Horner, who won six constructors' championships and eight drivers' titles with Red Bull, will no doubt be getting itchy feet soon. If Horner did pen an unlikely move at Ferrari it would see him form a wild pairing with his old rival, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton has a Ferrari contract until at least the end of 2026 and is already a huge voice within the Italian team. It is likely he would not be impressed if Horner replaced Vasseur, given he is a big fan of the Frenchman and has thrown his support behind him in public. When Vasseur's future was under speculation, Hamilton said: 'I love working with Fred – Fred's the main reason I'm in this team and got the opportunity to be here, for which I'm forever grateful for, and we're in this together. 'We're working hard in the background, things aren't perfect but, for me, I'm here to work with the team but also with Fred. 'I want Fred here. I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top, so that's that. So it's all nonsense.' Hamilton took a strong take on Horner's alleged 'inappropriate behaviour' with a female colleague last year. The ex-Red Bull boss was twice cleared from it by an independent investigation but Hamilton said it was 'hanging over the sport' and said the outcome was 'important for the future of F1'. He also hit out at Horner in 2023 for 'stirring' when he claimed Hamilton tried to join his team after leaving Mercedes. At the time Horner said that a member of Hamilton's team had been in touch over a possible switch to Red Bull earlier in the year. Hamilton rebuffed it and said Horner had actually been the one to text him and try set up a meeting. Obviously there was bad blood going back between the two during Hamilton and Max Verstappen's fierce and controversial title fight in 2021 which reached its crescendo in the contentious season finale in Abu Dhabi. Recently, with Horner still at Red bull, Hamilton admitted he regretted referring to Red Bull as a 'drinks company' in 2011. His comments suggested that he is previous beef with Horner was water under the bridge. At Silverstone he said: 'Many, many years ago, I remember saying something about Red Bull being only a drinks company. 'I always regretted it because I was just saying that Mercedes at the time were great. 'I was really just trying to gee up my team. But the truth is, Red Bull have been an incredible team. There are so many people there that are exceptional and they've dominated for years.' Horner makes his feelings on Hamilton known It feels like Horner would have no qualms working with the British 40-year-old, who he has praised in public this season. Speaking earlier in the year, Horner said of Hamilton's Ferrari move: 'I've seen some pictures, I think it [Ferrari red] suits him. 'It's great for Formula 1. Lewis Hamilton in a Ferrari – that really is box office. 'I think it's just another dynamic for this year that could be super exciting.' Back in 2023, Horner was asked whether he would sign Hamilton for Red Bull. He replied: 'What Lewis has achieved in F1 is second to none, but we're very happy with the drivers that we have – they're committed as a pair for not only this season but the next season as well. 'I can't see where we would be able to accommodate Lewis, but I'm sure they're (Mercedes) going to sort their issues out and we're certainly not writing him off yet.'

Dua Lipa stuns with custom Porsche at Goodwood
Pop icon Dua Lipa arrived in style for the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed with a custom Porsche 911 GT3 RS worth more than $1 million. The bespoke supercar designed by Dua Lipa was the star of Porsche's display as she cruised up the fabled hill climb alongside racers from the all-female Iron Dames team. The 'one kiss' singer styled a special livery for Porsche's sports car, combining striking turquoise, red, gold and dark green elements. This one-off Porsche will go under the hammer, auctioned off by RM Sotheby's, with proceeds going to the Sunny Hill Foundation, a charity that supports Kosovan causes including giving young women access to STEM education. 'I wanted to create something that fuses the emotion of music, design, and driving,' Dua Lipa said. 'The Sunny Hill Foundation has always been close to my heart, and this project is a celebration of the culture and creativity it supports.' Dua Lipa's design is a wrap applied to a car with much more subtle arctic grey paint, along with pyro red wheels and carbon ceramic brakes gripped by yellow-painted calipers. Under the skin, the special Porsche is equipped with an optional 'Weissach' package featuring a roll cage, roof, and suspension elements made from carbon fibre to save weight. Powered by a 4.0-litre flat six engine, the 911 GT3 RS produces 380kW of power at a soaring 9000rpm. It's not the fastest car in a straight line – 0-100km/h is sorted in 3.2 seconds – but it is one of the quickest cars to lap circuits, thanks to enormous spoilers that generate huge amounts of downforce. Dua Lipa's car could appeal to collectors – as well as folks who missed out on the model, which is no longer available to order as the brand has introduced a newer, '992.2' series Porsche 911, which is not yet available in GT3 RS trim. The model originally went on sale locally in 2023 for $500,200 plus on-road costs. But lightly used examples are listed on websites such as Carsales for around $850,000 drive-away, suggesting Dua Lipa's exclusive example should be worth a seven-figure sum.
