India are uncertain about playing Jasprit Bumrah in the second Test against England at Edgbaston due to his back injury, aiming to level the series after a defeat. England, leading 1-0, have retained their winning team, while Chris Woakes leads their bowling attack in the absence of Anderson and Broad.
India are contemplating a last-minute decision on whether to play world's top-ranked Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the second Test against England at Edgbaston starting Wednesday, as they aim to level the five-match series after losing the opener at Headingley by five wickets.
Bumrah, who is returning from a back injury, had earlier indicated he would only play three of the five Tests against England.

The fast bowler took 5-83 in the first innings at Headingley but went wicketless in the second as England successfully chased down 371, highlighted by Ben Duckett's 149.

"Bumrah is ready to play. It's how we manage these four Tests. So if we feel like there's value in playing him in this Test, we'll make that call at the very last minute," India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said on Monday.
India, who have lost seven of their 11 Tests under coach Gautam Gambhi, are considering bringing in left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who has taken 56 wickets at 22.16 in 13 Tests.
The visitors suffered batting collapses of 7-41 and 6-31 at Headingley, becoming the first team in over 60,000 first-class matches to score five individual hundreds and still lose.
Their fielding woes were evident as they dropped multiple catches, including two off Harry Brook who went on to score 99 in England's first innings after being dropped on 0, 46, and 82.

"At one point I felt there were too many captains. I just couldn't understand that. KL Rahul was making hand movements, Rishabh Pant was also doing it... There is only one captain," former India spinner Murali Karthik told Cricbuzz.
England has named an unchanged team after achieving the tenth-highest fourth-innings chase in Test history.
"I think the really important thing is for the team to be quite ruthless and once you're on top, try to put them to bed," said England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who finished the first Test with an unbeaten 44.
Despite including Jofra Archer in their squad, England opted not to end the express fast bowler's four-year Test absence due to injuries.
England summon former cricketer for help
Chris Woakes, 36, will lead the bowling attack on his home ground at Warwickshire in the absence of retired pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
"I played a lot of my England games with Jimmy and Broady so it is different not having them around but also it's a great opportunity for myself. I've enjoyed that role so far and it's good to pass on some knowledge to the younger guys that haven't played as much Test cricket," Woakes said.
The match begins on Wednesday with England leading the five-match series 1-0.

'Kuldeep Yadav is India's next best attacking option after Jasprit Bumrah': Ex-Australia captain slams shock Edgbaston selections

Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has questioned India's team selection for the second Test at Edgbaston, expressing surprise over the exclusion of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav . India made three changes to their playing XI, bringing in Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep in place of Shardul Thakur, Sai Sudharsan, and Jasprit Bumrah. England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl. Reacting on social media, Finch wrote: 'If Bumrah was fit to play then surely you need to pick the best bowler in the world? At the very least Kuldeep has to be in the XI if you're worried about taking 20 wickets. Yes, he might be more expensive but he's the next best attacking option!' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Finch's remarks echoed the sentiments of many fans and experts who were stunned by India's selection decisions. Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the world's best all-format bowlers, was left out despite being reportedly fit. Kuldeep, India's standout spinner in the first Test, also missed out on selection. With India trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, the absence of two key wicket-taking options has sparked intense debate. When Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir looked at the pitch to decide India Playing XI After being put in to bat, India's stand-in skipper Shubman Gill explained the reasoning: "Would've bowled first as well. If there's anything in the wicket, it's on the first day. Three changes - Reddy, Washi and Akash Deep come in. No Bumrah. Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break, and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch, so we'll use him there. We were tempted to play Kuldeep, but looking at the last match, our lower order didn't do well, so we decided to add some depth to the batting. Jasprit Bumrah blamed as 'surprising' act laid bare after Edgbaston omission: 'You keep those cards close to your chest'

Amid the rising criticism over the Indian team management resting Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test match against England in Birmingham, former England fast bowler Stuart Broad blamed the 31-year-old for his "surprising" act before the start of the series. India's Jasprit Bumrah during the warm up before the match(Action Images via Reuters) BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed at the time of the announcement of the Test squad for the England tour that Bumrah would play just three of the five Test matches in the series to manage his workload. The fast bowler had incurred back spasms during the tour of Australia earlier this year, which resulted in him missing the Champions Trophy. Later, in an interview with Dinesh Karthik for Sky Sports right before the start of the Test series, Bumrah revealed that he first communicated with the BCCI to discuss his workload management after sensing that he was being considered for the leadership role. ALSO READ: Sunil Gavaskar explodes over Kuldeep Yadav snub, exposes Gautam Gambhir's blunder: 'Nitish Reddy, Sundar won't fix that' "I called the BCCI and said I don't want to be looked at in a leadership role because I won't be able to give [it my] all Test matches coming a five Test-match series. So then, yes, the BCCI was looking at me at leadership. But then I had to say no," he said. Broad outlined Bumrah's statement, saying that he should not have made his plan to play just three Test matches in England public. Admitting it was a "surprising" decision from India to rest Bumrah at Edgbaston after his performance in Leeds, Broad, speaking to Sky Cricket, said what was more baffling to him was the fast bowler's decision to reveal his plan, which he felt should have been kept a secret. MUST READ: Why India, England players are wearing black armbands in Birmingham Test? 'A week is a very good time off for a fast bowler. '[Bumrah's omission] does surprise me and what also surprised me was him saying before the series he will only play three of the five Tests,' he said after Akash Deep replaced the 31-year-old in the playing XI. 'You keep those cards close to your chest and play each week as it comes. 'They will definitely want Bumrah at Lord's because of the movement you can get through the air." Earlier on Tuesday, in the pre-match presser, India captain Shubman Gill had said that Bumrah, who picked up a five-wicket haul in the first Test, was available for selection. However, India decided to rest him in Birmingham to keep him fresh for the third Test at the Lord's. "Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there," Gill explained after losing the toss.
