Inter exams put off by nine days
The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) annual examinations of XI-XII for the year 2025 have been delayed.
The pre-engineering, pre-medical and science general group exams that were to start on April 28 will now commence from May 6 or later.
Due to delay in the first phase of exams, the second phase, which includes Commerce and Arts, will also begin late. Officials have cited multiple reasons for the delay in exams including, unavailability of exam centres, changes in the previous first-year results due to grace marks, and the absence of a chairman at the board, resulting in lack of exam preparations.
A responsible officer of Universities and Boards Department told The Express Tribune that according to the information received from Board of Secondary Education Karachi indicates that matriculation exams will continue in Karachi until May 2. Many of the current exam centers are being used for matric exams and are also designated for the Intermediate exams. Therefore, after the matric exams conclude, these centers will be converted for Intermediate exams. Another reason for the delay is the change in previous first-year results due to grace marks.
It's worth noting that, according to initial decision of Department of Education's Steering Committee, matric exams in Sindh were supposed to begin on March 15 and Intermediate exams on April 8.
However, as the matric exams approached, some private school associations raised concerns that it would not be feasible for students to appeared in exams during the month of Ramazan.
Consequently, the Steering Committee held another meeting and approved the rescheduling of matric exams to April 8 after Eidul Fitr, with Intermediate exams to start the same day.
Now, with further delays, Intermediate students will once again be taking their exams in extreme heat, as has happened in the past. This delay in results will also impact university admissions and the start of the new academic session.

The summit in Astana brought together Xi with the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Under Russia's orbit until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the five Central Asian states have courted interest from major powers including China, the European Union and the United States since becoming independent. At the summit, the group signed a pact of "eternal" friendship as Xi called for closer ties with the resource-rich region. "We should... strengthen cooperation with a more enterprising attitude and more practical measures," said Xi in comments carried by state news agency Xinhua. Central Asia is also seen as a key logistics hub, given its strategic location between China, Russia, the Middle East and Europe. Speaking as Western leaders gathered on the other side of the world for the G7 in Canada, Xi refreshed his criticism of US President Donald Trump's trade policies. "Tariff wars and trade wars have no winners," Xinhua quoted him as saying. While Central Asian leaders continue to view Russia as a strategic partner, ties with Moscow have loosened since the war in Ukraine. China has also shown willingness to invest in massive infrastructure projects in the region, part of its Belt and Road initiative that uses such financing as a political and diplomatic lever.

Xi signs treaty to elevate ties with Central Asia
BEIJING: China President Xi Jinping signed a treaty to elevate ties with Central Asian nations on Tuesday, as Beijing looks to further deepen cooperation on trade, energy and infrastructure with the resource-rich region. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Beijing has been stepping up efforts to boost economic links with Central Asian nations traditionally within Russia's sphere of influence, drawn by their strategic location and energy resources. At a regional summit in the Kazakh capital of Astana on Tuesday, Xi, lauding a milestone, signed a treaty of 'permanent good-neighbourliness and friendly cooperation' with leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, China's official Xinhua news agency reported. The summit this week is the second such gathering, following the pomp-filled, inaugural gathering in northwest China in 2023. Both occasions have coincided with meetings of G7 leaders. 'At present, the world is undergoing accelerating changes unseen in a century, entering a new period of turbulence and transformation,' Xinhua quoted Xi as saying in a speech at the summit. 'Trade wars and tariff wars produce no winners, and unilateralism, protectionism, and hegemonism are bound to harm both others and oneself,' he said, in a thinly veiled swipe at the United States that had engaged in escalating tariffs with Beijing. 'China is ready to work with Central Asian countries to safeguard international justice, oppose hegemonism and power politics,' Xi said. He also pledged 1.5 billion yuan ($208.86 million) in grant assistance to the Central Asian countries this year to support their livelihood and development projects, and called for more cooperation in areas including trade, minerals and agriculture. Despite a trade truce with the US, Beijing has been keen to consolidate relations with its regional partners. China's two-way trade with the five Central Asian countries reached a record 286.42 billion yuan in the first five months this year, a 10.4% year-on-year increase, Xinhua reported citing the Chinese Customs. Turkmenistan, a major supplier of natural gas for China, is the only Central Asian nation with a trade surplus with China. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan's trade deficits with China run into the tens of billions. ENERGY, MINERAL COOPERATIONS In separate bilateral meetings with the regional leaders, Xi called for expanded cooperation in natural gas, minerals, international railway and law enforcement, according to summaries posted by the Chinese foreign ministry. In meetings with the Uzbek and Kyrgyz presidents on Tuesday, he urged progress on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, an overland route bypassing Russia.

Passenger car sales jump 32% in 11 months
Listen to article Passenger car sales increased by 32.1% to 94,388 units during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year compared to the same period in the previous year on account of a variety of reasons, including a dramatic fall in interest rates, back-to-back Eid festivities, anticipated price hikes ahead of the federal budget 2025-26, and others. According to data released by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), sales of all vehicles, including two-, three-, and four-wheelers, increased; however, sales of farm tractors declined. Sales of jeeps-cum-pickups rose by 66% to 31,706 units. Sales of trucks and buses increased by 95.7% to 3,776 units and by 73.3% to 719 units, respectively. Sales of motorcycles and rickshaws also surged by 30% to 1,378,131 units. However, sales of farm tractors fell by a dramatic 36.8% to 26,401 units. Automobile consultant and expert Shafiq Ahmed Shaikh said it augurs well that, excluding the tractor segment, other parts of the auto sector are gaining momentum as they are on an upward trend. This reflects that the auto industry is growing and regaining strength. "In my opinion, there are four main reasons. First, the reduction in interest rates — different banks and financial institutions are offering good and affordable instalment schemes. Secondly, owing to information and rumours ahead of the federal budget that vehicle prices will rise, sales have increased. Thirdly, during both Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha, sales witnessed substantial rises as customers wanted vehicles during the Eid holidays to celebrate in a better way. Finally, credit for the significant rise in vehicle sales also goes to improved law and order, which has supported the industry, along with favourable government measures allowing the industry to flourish. In my opinion, the auto industry has the potential and capacity to grow. We foresee that the existing industry will face stronger competition from electric vehicles (EVs), as the future will mainly depend on EVs," he said. Auto sector analyst Mashood Khan said all segments of the automotive industry performed well except for the tractor segment. The motorcycle industry has continuously gained strong momentum throughout the year due to the middle class, which cannot afford expensive four-wheelers. When it comes to the auto industry overall, it has started regaining strength. Meanwhile, raising concerns about the recently announced federal budget 2025-26, MG Motors Pakistan General Manager (GM) Marketing Division Syed Asif Ahmed said the industry is seeking clarity on the budget. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) enjoy 8.5% GST compared to 18% on EVs. This anomaly has existed for many years, giving HEVs an advantage over EVs. "Social media has reported an increase in the GST for HEVs from 8.5% to 18%. If true, this will jeopardise the huge investments made by almost all automakers in HEVs. The Finance Bill is silent on the subject, despite the Automotive Industry Development and Export Plan (AIDEP) 2021-26 commitment of no change in tariffs until June 2026. What is needed is for EV GST to be reduced to 8.5% to match HEVs," he said. He added that used car importers are abusing the gift, baggage, and transfer of residence schemes for commercial trading. Allowing commercial imports of five-year-old used cars with reduced Regulatory Duty (RD) will distort the playing field against local assemblers.
