Kerry Condon: 'Champagne was all I knew about F1'

Extra.ie22-06-2025
Banshees of Inisherin star Kerry Condon admits she knew little to nothing about Formula One before her lead role in the Brad Pitt F1 film.
Condon stars alongside Pitt in the new blockbuster F1, opening in Irish cinemas this week.
The 42-year-old received an Oscar nomination for her role as Siobhán, the long-suffering sister of Colm Farrell's character, in The Banshees of Inisherin.
She is also known for playing Octavia in the hit HBO series Rome (2005-2007); Stacey Ehrmantraut in Better Call Saul (2015-2022); and as the voice of the AI entity F.R.I.D.A.Y. in various films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kerry Condon in F1 Pic: Warner Bros/Apple
But she says the learning curve for her latest role was so steep, she thought she would have to go and get a degree in aerodynamics.
'I didn't know anything about Formula One, not a thing at all. I only knew about the podium and the champagne celebrations. That was the height of my knowledge.
'I had to learn a lot. about the engineering side of making the car and the physics of it. I got to a certain point where I said, 'I have to go to college to learn this properly!''
But instead, Condon wisely focused on 'the particular scenes that I was in' and explained to the audience what was going on, so if you are not a Formula One fan, you'll understand what is happening in the movie. 'So trying to walk that fine line between being very normal with a lot of the terminology, but yet in a way that people will understand.'
Over the past 20 years, Condon has established herself as one of the most sought-after character actors in Hollywood, but the Tipperary star said she only now feels comfortable in her new role as a 'leading lady? acting opposite Brad Pitt' no less.
Speaking this week ahead of the release of F1, Condon said she felt confident taking on the leading lady role in what is set to be this year's big summer blockbuster. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris in F1 Pic: Warner Bros/Apple
'I can be a character actress, but I can also be a leading lady? It wasn't a fluke, I got an Oscar nomination [for Banshees], and I felt I was up for acting opposite Brad Pitt. I think I've enough experience. I think I know what I'm doing,' she said during an interview with the US showbiz platform Entertainment Tonight.
In F1, Condon plays Kate McKenna, race director of the fictional APX GP team and the first female technical director in Formula One. Her character is influenced by Northern Ireland's Bernie Collins, a former Formula One strategy engineer.
Condon has also revealed she and Hollywood A-lister Pitt share 'a bit of romance' in the movie.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, she shot the host a suggestive look when he asked if depicting a romance with Pitt's character was 'part of the draw' for her to take part in the new movie.
'They scheduled it for half eight on a Thursday morning,' she said of her call time for those scenes with Pitt. 'I was like, 'Ah, come on.' So I had a vodka orange juice for my breakfast that morning. 'We were supposed to be in Vegas on a night out or whatever,' she added, before telling Colbert: 'You're giving it all away!'' And at a red-carpet event this week, the down-to-earth Thurles-born star gave a rather Irish answer when asked to reveal her most memorable moment during the high-profile, global blockbuster shoot.
Instead of nights out or parties with fellow cast members, which also include Javier Bardem and Damson Idris, Condon recalled walking around casinos in Las Vegas at 5 am when filming had finished, 'drinking tea' that cost $15 (€13).
She also rubbished reports circulating online that she is about to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a real-life reprise of her F.R.I.D.A.Y. character in the upcoming Disney series, Vision Quest.
'It's not true!' Condon said emphatically. 'I saw [the reports], and I was like, 'Who's saying this?!' It's not true, no, no, no? 'I wouldn't say absolutely 'no chance', but at the moment it's not in the cards for me.'

Bring Her Back sees Sally Hawkins do horror in style

Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-shortlisted for The Shape of Water and Blue Jasmine, Sally Hawkins really rolls the dice for her latest. In Bring Her Back, she is cast against type in an Aussie horror and delivers a performance for sibling directors Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) that's up there with her most acclaimed work - menace to put the wind up even the most seasoned viewers of all things scary. Foster parent Laura (Hawkins) agrees to take in siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong) when their father dies unexpectedly. Laura, who is also fostering the disturbed Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), is a bit off from the get-go, empathetic one minute and intimidating the next. What's she up to? Well, no spoilers here, but if you want a thrill ride, you need to get round to Laura's place. It's some feat when you can do deeply disturbing and darkly comic in the same movie, but the Philippou brothers pull it off, Danny Philippou's script with co-writer Bill Hinzman (they also collaborated on Talk to Me) delivering plenty of whiplash moments as the walls close in on Andy and Piper. Hawkins is in the best of on-screen company here. Barratt, an International Emmy winner at age 13 for the BBC Two film Responsible Child, deftly mixes bravery and bewilderment as Billy. Wong, who is visually impaired, had never acted before Bring Her Back, but stakes her claim to a screen career with one of this century's standout debuts. As for Phillips, well, it's incredible to see such screen presence in someone so young. Bring Her Back has plenty of blood that it doesn't need, and there are two far-fetched moments - involving a swimming pool and a freezer - even for horror, but apart from those gripes, it's another Aussie winnah.

How are fan projects changing the concert experience?

Picture this... you arrive at the concert you have been waiting months for. Your tickets are safely secured on your phone, you're dressed to the nines, and you're ready for a boogie. Then, in the queue, someone approaches you with a coloured piece of paper and a set of instructions. You are about to become part of a fan project. Fan projects are fan-led initiatives to create a memorable moment at a show or to communicate a message to the artist onstage. A common fan project is to light up your phone in a certain colour for a particular song, or for everyone to pull out a poster that bears the same sentence, usually some kind of pun or reference to a moment in the artist's set. For project organisers, it is a way to show their favourite artist how much they love and appreciate them. Ahead of Billie Eilish's concerts at the 3Arena in Dublin this weekend, one fan has been working for months on her fan project. 17-year-old Katie Gorman from Co Laois is aiming to get hundreds of people to light up the seating section in the colours of the Irish flag. She hopes to turn the standing section blue, in reference to the cover of the headliner's album, 'Hit Me Hard and Soft.' She has been working on the idea since May of last year. She hopes that the American singer will react as "It would make the whole thing feel like it was worth it, and it's taken a lot of work and even money." Katie has taken inspiration for her fan project from a similar effort for a different artist earlier this year. 15-year-old Ruby Campbell, from Co Dublin, planned the Gracie Abrams fan project for her concert in Dublin in March. "The fan project consisted of green, white and orange lights going across the seats to represent the Irish flag and pink hearts in the pit to represent our love for Gracie and the EU tour dates which were pink during the song 'Normal Things'." More than 90 people were involved in Ruby's fan project. She knew some of them in person, but the majority were recruited using social media. To keep things efficient, there was a google doc form where people gave their section, how much paper they'd be able to cut, and what time they'd get there to help hand out paper on the day. But the huge effort paid off. Gracie Abrams noticed the project and even took home one of the pink hearts used to light up the standing section. "For me, this was an out of body experience, I was shaking so hard, it felt like all my hard work had paid off," Ruby explained. Ruby was inspired to do a fan project by Kamila Zietek, who has organised three successful fan projects for Olivia Rodrigo concerts. For the US star's most recent concert in Marlay Park, Kamila spent months in her home in Galway organising for the crowd to hold up a sign saying, "We Care, We Care, We Care", an ode to the song 'Lacy' which lyrics' say "I care, I care, I care" "I knew I wanted to do more than just show up. I wanted to show her how much I appreciate her, her music, and the impact she made on my life," Kamila said. Rodrigo noticed the fan project during her performance of 'enough for you.' "Tonight was so much fun, and you guys are so wonderful, and you made all these signs," she told the delighted crowd. Katie, Ruby and Kamila have all become friends through working on these fan projects. There are multiple group chats filled with people they've met through the project, and they keep each other up to date on their lives and make plans to hang out in person. In Kamila's case, she didn't have anyone to go with to the Olivia Rodrigo concert in Marlay Park, so she sent a message into the group chat from the last fan project asking if anyone was going, and someone reached out and they went to the concert together. So, if you are going to either one of the Billie Eilish concerts this weekend, keep an eye out for the fan project and get involved.
