Rodgers sees Celtic 'doing more' in market

BBC News11 hours ago
Celtic do not need "a major overhaul", says Brendan Rodgers, but the manager expects to see the Scottish champions "doing more" in the transfer market.Rodgers has recruited goalkeeper Ross Doohan, forwards Benjamin Nygren and Callum Osmand, plus defender Kieran Tierney, while left-back Greg Taylor has joined PAOK."We're not needing a major overhaul of the squad, but freshness is so important," Rodgers told club media."Some of these guys have been here a long time. It's so important, even in a winning squad, that you refresh that and reset the competition in the squad. We've done some really good business up until now."
However, he stressed: "I see us doing more to get us set up for hopefully what will be a really exciting season."Tierney departed Celtic for Arsenal in a £25m transfer six years ago and the Scotland international has returned Glasgow as a free agent."Sometimes top players like that might come back later on in their career, but we're getting Kieran at 27 years of age," Rodgers said."I was with him during the summer, so I know first hand as well how excited he is to be here and I'm looking forward to seeing this new version of Kieran, having had the experience in the Premier League and playing at a top club like Arsenal."He'll come back here with greater maturity both as a person, as a professional and tactically and now we can really get the benefits of that."Of Sweden cap Nygren, Rodgers added: "He's a leader on the pitch and he produces on the pitch in terms of his goals he scores, what he creates and he's got real good physicality."I'm really looking forward to seeing him adapt to how we play."

Osaka ready to spread her grasscourt wings after being paralysed by fear

LONDON, July 2 (Reuters) - After years of having a rather a strained relationship with Wimbledon thanks to being "paralysed by fear" at the thought of playing on tennis's fastest surface, Naomi Osaka feels she has finally found her grasscourt wings. The Japanese player, who has won all four of her Grand Slam titles on the hardcourts of Melbourne Park and Flushing Meadows, has never found her comfort zone on the green, green grass of Wimbledon, making only four previous appearances during her 10-year professional career. During those four visits to the All England Club, she won a total of just five matches, with third-round showings in 2017 and 2018 her standout performances -- hardly anything to shout about for a woman who has been ranked on top of the world. But after matching her best ever Wimbledon showing on Wednesday with an impressive 6-3 6-2 win over Czech Katerina Siniakova, who has won the Wimbledon women's doubles title three times, Osaka feels she has finally overcome the fear factor on grass. "When I was younger, I had no fear. I think when you are young, you fear nothing, and that's one of the really cool things about it," explained Osaka, now ranked 53 as she continues to try to recapture her best form after taking a maternity break in 2023. "But with age fear kind of crept along and, I guess, paralysed me in a way. Now I'm kind of just getting over that and trying to spread my wings on grass. "I think it is working, and I think I am moving pretty well. Yeah, I just hope that in years to come and hopefully this year I can do a lot better in this tournament." Osaka could not have picked a better year to enjoy a deep run at the tournament. Following the carnage of seeds over the first three days, the highest seeds she could meet before a potential semi-final against either world number one Aryna Sabalenka or Australian Open champion Madison Keys are number 13 Amanda Anisimova or number 30 Linda Noskova -- neither of whom are known for their grasscourt pedigree. After two straight-set victories, she will certainly fancy her chances of defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to reach the last 16 here for the first time, considering the Russian has not beaten her since 2017. "Definitely this year I feel a lot more comfortable moving on grass," said Osaka after improving her Wimbledon win-loss record to 7-4 on the day her daughter Shai was celebrating her second birthday. "I know the last couple of years I was really scared to move because when I was younger, I strained my knee or whatever. It took a couple of years to get over that but I definitely feel a lot more comfortable."

When is Carlos Alcaraz playing his third round match at Wimbledon?

The 2025 Championships at Wimbledon are upon us as the All England Club opens its doors to the tennis world once again. Carlos Alcaraz is eyeing a third consecutive title in SW19, and is also looking to become the second player to win Roland Garros, Queen's and Wimbledon in the same year. World No 1 Jannik Sinner and British No 1 Jack Draper are the other favourites in the men's draw, but Alcaraz is already through to round three, thanks to a five-set win over Fabio Fognini and straight-sets dismissal of Britain's Oliver Tarvet. World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka is the favourite for the women's title, with 2022 champion Elena Rybakina also a leading contender after French Open winner Coco Gauff crashed out in round one. Czech player Barbora Krejcikova is the defending champion. Emma Raducanu, who missed out on a seeding, leads the British contingent in the women's draw, having overtaken Katie Boulter as British No 1 recently. Both won their first round matches on Monday, but only Raducanu reached round three, having beaten ex-champ Marketa Vondrousova. When is Carlos Alcaraz playing? Alcaraz's next match will take place on Friday 4 July, and he is expected to play on Centre Court or No 1 Court, but it remains to be seen whether he'll play Felix Auger-Aliassime or Jan-Lennard Struff. The pair began playing their second-round match on Wednesday evening but could not beat the curfew, so they will resume on Thursday, tied at one set all. F1 chief Stefano Domenicali tells Keir Starmer what sets the UK apart: ‘The home of our sport'

Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali has revealed what sets the UK apart in the sport in a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of Silverstone. Starmer welcomed a host of F1 personalities, including drivers Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon, to 10 Downing Street on Wednesday in celebration of the sport's 75th anniversary year. With close to half a million set to flock to the British Grand Prix this weekend, Domenicali believes it is not simply the country's passion for motorsport that makes it so integral to F1, but also what it puts into the industry, highlighting the UK's burgeoning employment sector in F1 that is unmatched by any other. "Next year, nine of the 11 Formula 1 teams will have a base here. We have our office and technical centre here in the UK. No other country can make that claim, and we are very proud of it,' said Domenicali. "But this is not just about the presence here, it is about what we bring with fans, employees at 4,500 companies working with the sport, 41,000 jobs linked to the F1. And 25,000 highly skilled engineers. We generate over £12bn to the UK economy and help keep the country a leader in world-class innovation, technology and skills. "This country is passionate about Formula 1 motorsport, and very proud of it. Seventy-five years ago, Formula 1 started here in the UK at Silverstone in 1950. Since then, it has become a British institution with deep roots and a huge contribution to the country.' Domenicali has run the sport since 2019 and recently agreed a new five-year deal to remain in his post. Other attendees at Downing Street included leaders of the incoming Cadillac F1 operation Graeme Lowdon and Daniel Towriss, F1 Academy managing director Susie Wolff, and F1 legends Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill, Martin Brundle and Jenson Button. Starmer added: "It is really great to have you and to celebrate that so many teams have chosen the UK as their base. This is pretty extraordinary - the sheer number of teams that are based here, just like the headquarters of Formula 1 itself. And next season's new teams on the grid - Cadillac, which opened a new facility at Silverstone, and Audi's building its technical centre near there as well. "So the continuation of the British stamp on the sport is absolutely there. In fact, there is only one team without a presence here, and I did wonder whether it would be too much of a diplomatic incident if I tried to lure Ferrari out of Italy, and whether it would increase our relationship or not!" The British GP is race 12 of the 2025 F1 season and will be nine-time winner Lewis Hamilton 's first home race in Ferrari red.
