Sydney FC youngster broke down crying as difficult Wrexham question saw boss hit out
A Sydney FC prodigy was left in tears after netting the decisive goal in his squad's surprise win over Wrexham and sharing his family's Welsh heritage. The Red Dragons are currently on a pre-season tour in Australia as they gear up for their campaign in the Championship next season.
They kicked off with a promising start, securing a 3-0 friendly win against Melbourne Victory last week. However, Wrexham faced a setback this Tuesday when they were edged out 2-1 by a spirited young Sydney side.
The Hollywood-backed team initially went ahead in the first half thanks to an own goal after James McClean's free-kick was inadvertently deflected by Sydney's Corey Hollman. Sydney then levelled the scoreline just before the interval when defender Alexandar Popovic headed home from a corner.
Despite Wrexham's efforts to regain control, they were caught off guard in the 74th minute by substitute Joe Lacey. The 18-year-old midfielder dazzled the more 40,000 spectators at Allianz Stadium with an excellent strike from just outside the box.
Post-match footage showed Lacey in a poignant embrace with his sister. He later revealed the significance of his goal, citing his mother's Welsh background and mentioning that his aunt works as a paramedic at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground during games.
In a post-match interview, Lacey said: "My mum's Welsh and it's very big for me. My family, they're all watching in Wales, she (Lacey's mum) is there at the moment.
"I love them all. I'm very grateful for them. They're all in Wales besides from my sister who came in from Newcastle, so I'm very grateful for them."
Reflecting on his goal, Lacey added: "It just felt like a video game. It felt like I had a VR (virtual reality) set on."
Sydney manager Ufuk Talay seemed less than pleased during his post-match press conference when prompted to weigh up A-League teams against Wrexham. He sidestepped the comparison and urged Aussies to back their homegrown football.
He said: "I personally don't like this comparison. They [Wrexham] play in their own competition, we play in our own competition. I don't think we're comparing apples with apples at the same time - it's apples with oranges.
"Their budgets compared to our budgets are totally different. Our game is the A-League so we should love and support our domestic game regardless. Our competition level is good enough for players to be selected at international level."
Wrexham's loss to Sydney was compounded by an injury to star midfielder Ollie Rathbone, who hobbled off before the break with an ankle issue. Post-match reports confirmed he was later taken to hospital for an X-ray.
"We're really hoping for him and it's a very quiet dressing room in there, because we have concern about Ollie," Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson told the club's media team.
"It didn't look that bad an incident when it happened, but it swelled up instantly in the dressing room, and Kev (Mulholland, club physio) has gone with him to hospital. We've just got to keep our fingers crossed."
Parkinson will be keeping his hopes up for a clean bill of health as Wrexham wrap up their tour with a match against Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on Saturday.

Wrexham are reportedly set to fork out a club record fee for an international player who was lucky to avoid punishment after a heavy challenge on an England star Wrexham are reportedly set to break their transfer record to sign a player who was involved in a controversial clash with England star Kyle Walker. The Welsh side, backed by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are said to have agreed a deal for Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace for an initial £2.16million (€2.5m), with the fee expected to rise once bonuses and add-ons are taken into account. The New Zealand international has played in Serie A for the last three-and-a-half years, racking up 74 appearances since first arriving on loan from Belgian team Sint-Truiden in January 2022. Empoli were relegated from the Italian top tier at the end of last season but Cacace has been linked with several clubs at that level this summer, including Cagliari, Pisa and Cremonese. However, according to Sky Sport Italia, Wrexham have won the battle to secure his services following their recent promotion to the Championship. If confirmed, it would top the £2m the Red Dragons forked out to acquire Reading striker Sam Smith back in January. Details of the potential transfer have emerged in the same week Wrexham are due to play Cacace's former team Wellington Phoenix in a pre-season friendly in his hometown. The deal would be seen as a coup for the club as they prepare for life in the second tier, but the 24-year-old's career has seen several controversies. Cacace's clash with Walker occurred as Empoli suffered a 2-0 home defeat to AC Milan in February. Walker lined up for Milan after joining from Manchester City on loan in January. The Empoli defender was lucky to avoid being sent off after lunging into a heavy challenge on Walker, which left him writhing in pain on the pitch. Despite a VAR check, Cacace somehow managed to escape punishment entirely, much to the bemusement of those watching. He also managed to anger Colombia fans in June 2019 after New Zealand lost to the South American team in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Cacace's Instagram account was showered with hundreds of insults and threats as he shushed Colombia's keeper after scoring in a penalty shootout which his side later went on to lose. According to New Zealand news site Stuff, one Colombian fan posted: "Wipe your tears and go home with your mouth shut!" Meanwhile, Cacace was sent off following a match against Tunisia in the ACUD Cup international tournament in Egypt in March 2024. He was shown a red card after getting into an exchange with Tunisia's Elias Achouri. All Whites coach Darren Bazeley described the sending off as unfair after the game. "I think it's harsh," he said. "The referee sent their player off. They were pretty competitive people, and Libby's said 'bye bye.'" Despite being involved in some fiery incidents, Cacace also has some impressive achievements under his belt. Oleksandr Usyk brandished three fingers in the face of Daniel Dubois at the final media conference before they fight for the undisputed world heavyweight championship at Wembley Stadium this Saturday night. Usyk was affirming his expectation of crowning his legend by becoming an undisputed world champion for a third time. First at cruiserweight. West Wales students ready for WorldSkills National Finals
Of the 120 strong Welsh students entering this year's WorldSkills national final, 20 are from west Wales, with 15 of these being from Pembrokeshire. Among them is 17-year-old Elara Jones from Cardigan who is competing in the Beauty Therapy Practitioner competition. Elara won a Gold Medal at the Skills Competition Wales competition in March this year in Beauty Therapy Practitioner level 3 category. The Coleg Ceredigion student also won bronze in the beauty therapy category in last year's national finals and has achieved silver medals at levels one and two in Skills Competition Wales. 'Winning gold at Skills Competition Wales and now being selected for the WorldSkills UK National Finals shows that all the hard work and effort I've put in has really paid off,' said Elara. 'I'm so pleased, it feels like everything I've done has been building up to this moment, and it means a lot to see it all lead to something so exciting.' This year's national final will be held in Wales for the very first time this November. The UK's flagship skills competition will come to several Welsh venues allowing the country shine on the national stage. With 417 competitors taking part from across the UK and 47 finals planned, this event is not just a contest but a nationwide celebration of world-class vocational and technical training. Wales will be strongly represented; a record breaking 120 young people from across the country have earned their place following standout performances in qualifier heats. This means 29 per cent of the national finalists will be Welsh competitors; an increase from last year's already impressive one in four. Competitors will demonstrate their abilities in a wide range of disciplines, including 3D Digital Game Art, Aircraft Maintenance, Health and Social Care and Culinary Arts. Those who impress under pressure might be selected to represent the UK on the international stage at the 'Skills Olympics' in Japan in 2028. Minister for culture, skills and social partnership Jack Sargeant said: 'These competitions show the real-world value and applications of apprenticeships and are invaluable in futureproofing our economy. 'I am proud Wales is hosting the WorldSkills Finals UK 2025. We have a beautiful country, and I hope all visitors will take some time to explore it.
