22-Year-Old Becomes Sole Caregiver for Grandmother and Brother After Parents Drown in Riptide
Authorities said that a bystander borrowed a boogie board and was able to get her brother to shore, saving his life
However, despite "extensive lifesaving measures" authorities were not able to save Peter and Sonia NguyenA 22-year-old college student in Georgia is now the primary caregiver for her brother and grandmother after her parents drowned in a riptide.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a 57-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife — later identified by authorities as Peter and Sonia Nguyen — drowned near a resort in Destin, Fla., last month. They were both residents of Buford, Ga.
'Beach safety personnel pulled the mother out of the water while Destin Beach Safety and an OCSO Marine Unit located the father," authorities said in a statement. "Intense and extensive lifesaving measures were performed on both but were unsuccessful."
'Witnesses say the couple and their son were spotted struggling in the Gulf about 75 to 100 yards offshore,' officials continued. 'A bystander borrowed a boogie board and went out to try to rescue them. He was able to get the 26-year-old son to shore, and his actions saved the young man's life.'
According to the sheriff's office, yellow flags were flying on the beach at the time of the incident, indicating moderate surf or currents.

The attack happened at the Den Treek estate. In a statement shared on their official website, the estate said the boy was bitten and dragged into the woods by the animal. 'On Wednesday morning, July 30th, a child was bitten by a wolf (presumably Bram) and dragged into the woods,' the statement read. 'The child was with several adults and other children in the woods near the Pyramid of Austerlitz. While playing, the child was unexpectedly attacked by the wolf and dragged away.' The statement added, 'Due to the prompt action of the adults present, who hit the wolf with a stick, the wolf released the child into the woods and ran away. The child was taken away by ambulance. The victim's condition is not yet known.' According to The Times and RTV Utrecht. the boy received stitches for bite wounds on his back and near his armpit. He also had scratches and abrasions. Images shared with RTV Utrecht showed large scratches on the boy's back. He has since left the hospital and is back at home, according to the outlet. 'I thought it was a playful dog running towards us and thought, Nice, I'll go and play,' " the boy's mother, Nynke, 41, told The Times. 'But before I got there, I heard my eldest son screaming very loudly. He was jumped by the animal and dragged into the woods.' Speaking of how her son was rescued, she added, 'There were two men with big sticks who beat the animal and eventually they got it off my son. I was in a state of total panic and grief.' Two other women who were nearby then called emergency services, according to RTV Utrecht. 'I'm very happy that I wasn't alone with my two children,' Nynke told The Times. "It's not like we were going for a walk deep in the woods where no one normally goes," the boy's father Mike, who was not present at the time of the attack, told RTV Utrecht. "We knew about previous incidents at the Den Treek Estate, but I didn't know that the Pyramid of Austerlitz was also part of it," he added. Mayor Magda Jansen of the municipality of Woudenberg, which is near Utrecht, also said in a statement, "Please heed this advice. Do not enter the forest with children. As an adult, you must also be very alert when entering the forest. Stay on the paths and, above all, do not enter the forest alone," per RTV Utrecht. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Dakota Trenkle Jr., a 13-year-old who was reported missing on Sunday, was found alive at the bottom of a nearby ravine with serious injuries to his head and leg, according to the local sheriff's department and a GoFundMe created on his behalf. Authorities said the Missouri boy had survived more than three days without food or water. Newsweek has reached out to the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department for comment via email on Friday. What To Know Trenkle was reported missing after he left home on his skateboard to visit a friend but never arrived, authorities said. In a July 29 post, the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department reported that Trenkle was found "after an extensive search involving multiple agencies and widespread community support." Earlier that day, Trenkle's brother called emergency responders after finding Dakota's skateboard about a half mile from their home. Police then requested support from the Farmington Correctional Center (FCC) K-9 Unit. A 5-year-old bloodhound named Daryl successfully followed Trenkle's scent and discovered him at the bottom of a ravine in about a foot of water, nearly 240 feet down. "Dakota sustained a traumatic leg injury and endured 96 hours of being exposed to the elements without food or water. Due to Dakota's current condition, he was airlifted by ARCH helicopter to a St. Louis area hospital for emergency medical care," the sheriff's department post said. A GoFundMe set up by his aunt, Brittney Van Volkenburg, said he suffered "head trauma." What People Are Saying St. Francois County Sheriff Jeff Crites: "This was an incredibly difficult search, both physically and emotionally. Finding Dakota alive after so many days is nothing short of a miracle. We are thankful to everyone who contributed their time and energy to bring him home." Van Volkenburg, also a volunteer firefighter with the Goose Creek Lake Fire Department, told KSDK: "This was a miracle. He's a fighter. He's been a fighter since the day he was born." Lieutenant Virginia Stafford, handler on the K-9 unit, told KSDK: "We had our gear on, which makes us hotter. The terrain was slick from the humidity ... as soon as we went down, Daryl was on track; he was pulling really well. He did lead us down to him ... There's no way he could have hollered for help; he couldn't speak when we got to him. Daryl led us straight to him ... Daryl is a hero. He did a great job. That's why we train every week, in all elements—hot, cold, water, snow. It paid off." What Happens Next An online fundraiser has raised over $13,000, with more than 300 donations for Trenkle's medical bills.

"During a routine activity to prepare food for the leopards, which took place as part of a behind-the-scenes tour for visitors of the zoo, a leopard managed to escape from the leopard house into the inner courtyard and attacked one of the zoo employees," the Biblical Zoo said in a statement shared with The Jerusalem Post. Nuri suffered "severe injuries" and was reportedly already unconscious when emergency responders arrived on the scene. Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedic Dov Shari told The Jerusalem Post that responders "immediately attempted to stop the bleeding," noting that the injuries were on his neck. 'We gave him life-saving treatment, including CPR, before he was evacuated for further treatment," they said. Despite their attempts, Nuri was pronounced dead at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center after "prolonged resuscitation efforts," the hospital told Ynetnews. In their statement shared with The Jerusalem Post, the zoo stressed that "at no point was there any physical danger to the visitors, who were protected behind a glass window." They noted that they were unsure of how the leopard escaped its enclosure and that they would be investigating with the help of local police.
