THANK YOU, FERGIE! Rangers goal hero Findlay Curtis admits he will always treasure Sir Alex's kind words after Euro win

Daily Mail3 days ago
Findlay Curtis says he will treasure Sir Alex Ferguson 's words of encouragement after his first senior goal helped Rangers see off Panathinaikos at Ibrox.
On just his second start for the club, the 19-year-old changed the momentum of the game early in the second half with a brilliant solo effort.
With the Greeks then reduced to 10-men after Giorgos Vagiannidis was sent off, Djeidi Gassama marked his debut from the bench with a goal which handed new boss Russell Martin a two-goal cushion to take to Athens for next week's second leg.
Manchester United legend Ferguson, who had visited Rangers' training base last week, was present at the match together with new chairman Andrew Cavenagh.
The 83-year-old made a point of praising Curtis in person afterwards, a gesture Martin insists was the ultimate accolade and capped off the perfect night.
'He just congratulated me on my goal,' said the club academy graduate. 'Coming from a legend like him, I'll take it.
'Obviously, it's another dream come true, playing in the Champions League.
'I'm on top of the world. I've been here since I was six and I'm just delighted. I'm still speechless, to be honest.
'My mum and dad were both at the game, so were my girlfriend, her parents, my brother and sister and all my pals were here.
'They waited after the game. I could see my mum crying in the stands. It was a good moment.'
Curtis' moment of glory came after Rangers had weathered a storm in the first half of Martin's first competitive game in charge.
Keeper Jack Butland produced two outstanding saves in the first period with two more coming early in the second period just before the teenager struck.
'The first 10 minutes I thought we started well,' he recalled.
'Then there was a rough 10-15 minute period where it was dead sloppy. We came in half-time and had a chat about it and came back out in the second half and I thought it changed.
'Jack was excellent. He made big saves. I'd say it was just about confidence. We got the ball down, started playing our way. Obviously, that goal spurred us on to try to score more goals.'
Martin's men are in the box seat in the tie, yet still have work to do if they are to progress to the next qualifying round where Servette - 1-0 winners away to Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday - would likely await.
With temperatures in Greece potentially rising to 35 degrees, Curtis is adamant that nothing will be taken for granted.
'I've heard it's very hot, so it's going to be hard,' he said. 'It's just halfway in the tie and hopefully the boys get us through.'

Leeds sign Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri as Daniel Farke shores up newly-promoted squad

Leeds have made their seventh summer signing by bringing in Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri from Lyon for an initial €16m (£13.9m). The fee, which could rise by a further €2m in add-ons, takes Leeds' summer spending to around £75m as they bolster their squad in a bid to stay in the Premier League. The 27-year-old joins from Lyon, who he helped reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season in a campaign when he kept 13 clean sheets, after goalkeeper was a problem position for Leeds last season, even as they won the Championship. Manager Daniel Farke dropped the long-time regular Illan Meslier for back-up Karl Darlow for the last few games. A goalkeeper was always expected to be a summer priority for Farke, who has been busy in the transfer market. Leeds have also signed midfielders Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach, centre-backs Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw, left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson and forward Lukas Nmecha.

PSG 'agree deal for new goalkeeper', with 'door open for Man United or Man City' to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly agreed a deal for a new goalkeeper, leaving the future of Gianluigi Donnarumma up in the air - with Manchester United and Manchester City now poised to pounce. United are still hunting for stability between the sticks following a rough two-year spell from Andre Onana, who has failed to impress since joining from Inter Milan for £47.2million in 2023. Since his arrival, no Premier League goalkeeper has committed more errors leading to goals across all competitions than Onana's eight. His save percentage in 2024–25 was just 67.2 per cent - ranking 11th in the league. Meanwhile at City, Ederson 's long-term future has been questioned, and the club are set to re-sign James Trafford from Burnley for £27m. Trafford is regarded as a bright talent who could provide competition or eventually succeed Ederson down the line. The 22-year-old came through City's academy but never made a senior appearance for the first team before joining Burnley in 2023 for £15m - nevertheless, City retained a buy-back option for their exciting talent. According to L'Equipe, PSG are closing in on signing Lille's promising shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier. The 23-year-old is seen as a long-term project who could eventually start for the French capital club. The arrival of Chevalier could force Donnarumma to consider his options, with both United and City said to be in the race to sign him. Before sanctioning Donnarumma's departure, it is believed that PSG want to secure the signing of Chevalier. Donnarumma enjoyed the most successful season of his career in 2024-25, registering 12 clean sheets as PSG marched to an imperious treble-winning campaign. The Italian shot-stopper is widely considered the frontrunner to win the Yashin Trophy for a second time - an award handed out to the best-performing goalkeeper in the world. It has not yet been disclosed what fee PSG would demand for Donnarumma, but it would not be surprising if clubs were forced to break the bank for him. Kepa Arrizabalaga remains the most expensive goalkeeper ever, after Chelsea signed him from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for £71.6m. No Premier League goalkeeper has committed more errors leading to goals across all competitions than Onana's eight since he arrived at United Ederson has made 372 appearances and kept 168 clean sheets for City since joining for £35m from Benfica in 2017 Donnarumma's deal expires in the summer of 2026, but he has made it clear that he wants to stay in Paris. 'My priority is to stay at PSG and sign a new deal,' he said last month. 'I don't think there will be any problems in the negotiations.' Donnarumma began his career at ASD Club Napoli's youth system before moving to AC Milan, where he went on to make his Serie A debut at 16 years old in 2015. He cemented himself as not only one of the most exciting young talents but one of the best goalkeepers in world football, before joining PSG as a free agent in the summer of 2021.

Man Utd hijack Brentford bid for wonderkid just days after snaring £71m Bryan Mbeumo from Premier League rivals

BRENTFORD face a transfer battle with Manchester United over whizkid Idrissa Gueye. The Bees are reeling from losing forward Bryan Mbeumo to the Red Devils in a £71million deal. 2 Yoane Wissa is also set to leave this summer — but new boss Keith Andrews feels he can put one over United chief Ruben Amorim by landing Senegalese kid Gueye. Andrews wants to snap up the Metz forward, 18, but thought Brentford had only Southampton to beat for his signature. Yet United and Burnley have since joined the hunt, along with German side Borussia Dortmund. And the fierce competition has forced Bees chief to now look at matching his French club's £15m asking price. Brentford can offer Gueye a chance at early Premier League football, while United only see him as a long-term project. The Clarets are late to the chase but remain realistic candidates as they too could offer a quicker route to first-team football. The teenager only joined Ligue 2 Metz from Senegalese club Génération Foot in January, making his debut in a goalless draw with Lorient. He scored his first goal in a 3-1 win over Paris FC just days after arriving, but saw his special occasion end in A&E. Gueye collided with an opponent and was rushed to hospital with damage to his teeth. Gueye was also part of the Senegal squad that handed Thomas Tuchel his first defeat as England boss. After an early Harry Kane opener, the African side turned the game around to secure a historic 3-1 win at the City Ground, though Gueye was an unused substitute.
