Celebrating Mandela Day at Ingane Yami Children's Village

In the spirit of Nelson Mandela's enduring legacy, The Daily News Milk Fund spent Mandela Day at a place that reflected the very heart of his vision, Ingane Yami Children's Village.
Nestled in the lush Shongweni Valley, Ingane Yami – meaning 'My Child' in isiZulu, is not just a children's home, but a permanent, loving village for orphaned and vulnerable children.
The village consists of individual homes, each led by a dedicated foster mother who cares for six children, creating a nurturing family environment where dignity, healing, and hope are restored.
This Mandela Day, The Daily News Milk Fund chose to spend our 67 minutes by visiting this inspiring village, which is also proudly one of the beneficiaries on our ongoing milk and porridge distribution list.
As part of the day's visit, we were honoured to donate essential food items such as rice and sugar, small tokens that we hope will go a long way in their daily lives.
We were also thrilled to treat the children to ice cream, kindly sponsored by *Polar Ice Cream*, whose generosity brought wide smiles to little faces. To make the day even more memorable, each child received a goodie bag filled with treats and love; a small gesture to remind them just how cherished they are.

Ingane Yami is more than just a shelter – it is a thriving, growing village built on a dream that took shape in 2009. It began as a vision in the hearts of Yvonne and Roger Greig, former senior pastors of Open Skies Church, who felt called to respond to the devastating effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and poverty within KwaZulu-Natal.
That dream is now a reality, with seven operational homes, an on-site school, social workers, a community hall, sports fields, and a resource centre in development.
During our visit, we could feel the buzz of excitement as the children prepared for an upcoming corporate soccer tournament. Here, children were not merely cared for, they are empowered, educated, and uplifted.
As we continue our work at The Daily News Milk Fund, it is organisations like Ingane Yami that remind us why we do what we do. Their vision to eventually grow to 25 homes and care for 150 children is a bold and beautiful goal, one that deserves community support and celebration.
Mandela once said, 'There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.'
On this past Mandela Day, we were privileged to witness a village that treats its children with the utmost care, compassion, and love – every single day.

Staff of Caxton Local Media Joburg East as well as the Benoni City Times slapped on some hairnets and slipped on gloves as we endeavoured to make 1 000 sandwiches in celebration of Mandela Day on July 18. Loaves of bread were stacked high as staff members abandoned their desks to prepare delectable sarmies, which were donated to various charity organisations within each publication's footprint. 'I cannot remember when last anyone did anything for our organisation for Mandela Day,' she said. 'Knowing that each individually packed sandwich was not only prepared with us in mind, but that our local community newspaper identified us as worthy beneficiaries, is truly heart-warming.' Casting her eyes on a further donation of packets of soup, which were donated by Caxton staff, Grobler said that the initiative will assist greatly in keeping bellies full and hearts filled with hope. 'I cannot wait to start handing these treats out at our weekly Friday soup kitchen,' continued Grobler. 'We are incredibly grateful to Caxton and the Benoni City Times. You are always willing to assist local charity organisations' tell their stories to garner ongoing support.' On Mandela Day, Pretoria News and Big Save joined forces to uplift the elderly residents of Mamelodi Old Age Home, donating food hampers and spreading kindness in honour of Nelson Mandela's legacy. The leadership of Pretoria News and Big Save believe that everyone deserves a good life and that every act of kindness – big or small – counts during this Mandela Month and beyond. The two brands, both rooted in the communities they serve in the Tshwane region, demonstrated this when they joined hands to celebrate this year's International Nelson Mandela Day on Friday with the residents of the Mamelodi Old Age Home in Mamelodi East, Pretoria. Pretoria News and retail partner Big Save donated 67 food hampers to the old age home. The outreach function on Friday was a heartfelt gesture to honour the late former president. Mandela Day, commemorated annually on July 18, encourages South Africans and the world to dedicate their time to acts of kindness, reflecting on Mandela's 67 years of service to the nation. In that spirit, Pretoria News and Big Save stepped in with practical support offering not only food but dignity and care to senior citizens often overlooked. The Mamelodi Old Age Home houses 56 elderly residents aged 60 and above, many of whom rely on limited government grants and small family contributions to make ends meet. The 67 food parcels were each packed with 12.5kg maize meal, samp, salt, sugar, tea, and Kellogg's Corn Flakes will go a long way in easing their burdens.
