When is Muharram-ul-Haram 2024?
As per the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee, the crescent moon was sighted on the evening of June 26, marking the start of Muharram-ul-Haram from Friday, June 27. The 10th day of Muharram, also known as Yum-e-Ashura, will be observed on Sunday, July 6.
This month is not only the beginning of the Hijri calendar but also a time of peace, devotion, and spiritual awakening. It is one of the four most sacred months in Islam where all acts of violence are strictly prohibited.
Significance of Muharram and the Islamic New Year
The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, is the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar. The word 'Muharram' itself comes from 'haram', meaning 'forbidden', indicating the sanctity of this holy month.
This period holds deep importance for Muslims worldwide. The first ten days are especially significant as they honour the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA)—the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)—who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

Dawoodi Bohra leader Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin's inaugural Ashara sermon in Chennai invigorates the followers' faith
MUMBAI: Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the 53rd leader of the global Dawoodi Bohra community, delivered the inaugural sermon of this year's Ashara Mubaraka from Saifee Masjid on SMB Street in Chennai. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Syedna began his sermon by reflecting on his father, the late 52nd leader, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin's visit to Chennai for Ashara Mubaraka 50 years ago. He underscored the deep connection his father had with the city and the community. Reflecting on the community's historical journey, Syedna Saifuddin noted how many members originally migrated from Sidhpur to Chennai in search of better livelihoods. Ashara Mubaraka is a period from the 2nd to the 10th of Moharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, dedicated to remembering Prophet Mohammed, his grandson Imam Husain, who, along with his family and companions, endured immense suffering at the Battle of Karbala in Iraq in 680. During this solemn and sacred period, community members around the world gather in masjids and centres each morning and evening. The themes explored in Ashara Mubaraka, drawn from the Holy Quran, Islamic history, and Fatimi philosophy, connect centuries of teachings and tradition with contemporary moral and social issues facing the community and humanity at large. The Syedna's sermons will revolve around a central theme, which will guide the spiritual reflections over the coming days. Syedna announced that he would use each of his sermons this year to explore the universe, the planetary orbits, its celestial bodies, and ultimately, on the final day, the planet earth. He drew parallels between the physical stars and planets and between key personalities from the history of Islam, who also, like the stars above, have had a lasting impact on the inhabitants of the earth, specifically upon adherents to the faith. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Syedna stated that this cosmic theme would allow for a rich exploration of the harmony between faith and science, declaring that when viewed from the right perspective, both religion and science bolster and strengthen one another. Congress MLA from Mumbai Amin Patel who flew into the city to attend Syedna's sermon on the first day of his Ashara Mubaraka sermons said that it was uplifting. "For over three hours, Syedna sahab kept us engaged in his deeply thoughtful sermon. We heard him in utmost attention and I was overwhelmed with the way he explained the purpose of life on this earth. We did not realise how over three hours flew while we heard him," said Patel. While explaining the cosmic forces that draw stars to one another and maintain celestial bodies in their orbits, Syedna underscored the immense power of love in bringing people together. He explained that 'mohabbat', love in Arabic, is a powerful force for good, especially when that love inspires people towards acts of charity and kindness. He praised the Dawoodi Bohra inhabitants of Chennai for their commitment to their fellow denizens of South India's largest city, and for serving their brothers and sisters from all communities and faiths. Syedna concluded the sermon by recounting the sacrifices made by Prophet Muhammed's grandson, Imam Husain, and the tragic sequence of events that led to his martyrdom in Karbala (Iraq) in 680. He explained how remembering this tragedy, year after year, empowers the community, increasing its empathy and rekindling its dedication to the universal values of love, harmony and humanity. Around 43,000 Dawoodi Bohra community members have gathered in Chennai for the occasion. This includes 8,000 Bohra residents of Chennai and 35,000 guests who have travelled from across the world to participate. The primary venue for the congregations is Saifee Masjid at SMB Street, with live telecasts extending to nine other centres across the city, including the Wings Convention Centre, YMCA Ground and Binny Ground. Beyond Chennai, community centres in Coimbatore, Erode and Salem in Tamil Nadu and other cities in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, will also benefit from the live broadcast. Under the guidance and leadership of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, these learning sessions are designed to reinvigorate the community's faith as they navigate the complexities of modern life. The sermons inspire devotees to seek knowledge in the light of the Holy Quran and to strive to emulate the noble qualities of Prophet Muhammed and his family members.

Sound of innovation: Mumbai mosques go digital with 'azan app' to overcome loudspeaker curbs
Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills In the backdrop of curbs over the use of loudspeakers, half-a-dozen mosques in Mumbai have registered on a dedicated mobile phone application which relays the 'azan', or call to prayer, directly to the faithful in app, Online Azan , has been developed by a Tamil Nadu-based the restrictions and sensitivities surrounding the use of loudspeakers for the call to prayer, the dedicated mobile app helps relay the azan directly to worshippers from local mosques, Fahad Khalil Pathan, managing trustee of Mahim Juma Masjid, told free app will allow users to listen to the azan at home, especially during Ramzan (the Islamic holy month of fasting) and other times when public announcements are restricted, he explained."The initiative comes after a police crackdown on the use of loudspeakers, where officers visited the mosque (Juma Masjid) and warned loudspeaker use could result in action. This led to the mosque temporarily disabling its sound system," Pathan ensure that spiritual experience remains uninterrupted, especially for the elderly and those residing nearby (the mosque), the Juma Masjid in the Mahim area has adopted the app, he app was developed with technical support from a team of IT professionals from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, and is now available on Android devices and app plays a live audio stream of the azan through mobile phones, exactly when it is delivered from the mosque. Worshippers who cannot physically hear the azan due to sound restrictions can now receive it through this app in real-time, Pathan app also serves a larger community purpose by notifying users about prayer times and can be used like a smart watch alert system. Once installed and configured, it runs have praised the initiative, stating that even when loudspeakers are off, they can now still stay connected to their neighbourhood mosque's azan through their mobile said the 10x15 box speakers installed at mosques do not spread the sound of the azan as widely as the traditional loudspeakers. Many people who were accustomed to hearing the azan through loudspeakers have found it difficult to hear the call for prayers from the this backdrop, the Online Azan app has proven to be very helpful."We chose innovation over confrontation. Now, the faithful can stay connected to the azan timings regardless of the use of loudspeakers. In the past three days alone, 500 residents living near our masjid have registered on the app. A total of six masjids in Mumbai have registered with the app's server (located in India)," he simply need to download the app, select their locality, and choose the masjid nearest to them. They will then receive live notifications whenever the call to prayer is made from that mosque."It's important to clarify that the Bombay High Court has not ordered the removal of loudspeakers, but has set permissible sound limits -- 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. In response and on recurring request from the police, we have voluntarily stopped using loudspeakers and have shifted to box speakers to comply with the guidelines," Pathan Ali, one of the co-founders of Online Azan, said the company that developed the app is three-year-old and has 250 mosques in Tamil Nadu registered with company asks for an application form, address proof of the mosque and the Aadhaar card of the person who gives the call to prayer, he Congress general secretary Asif Farooqui welcomed the move by mosques to adopt the new technology."Loudspeaker was just a medium to convey what needs to be said in a larger way. There should be no disturbance to others. Prayer is important and not loudspeaker. There are multiple ways to communicate the call to prayer and it is good mosques are adapting to new innovations," the politician leader Kirit Somaiya has been spearheading a campaign against the use of loudspeakers on mosques in former MP has claimed that due to his campaign, 1,500 loudspeakers have been taken down in the metropolis, which he said were being used without permission from authorities.
