Man arrested following 9-hour standoff in Bear Creek
Paul Lawrence Rader, 47, of the 1500 block of Lambert Chapel Road, Siler City, was charged with two counts of felony attempted first-degree murder; one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; six counts of felony discharge of a weapon into occupied property; and one count of misdemeanor injury to real property
The incident began around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, when deputies responded to a residence on Lambert Chapel Road to serve an involuntary commitment order at the request of the man's family. While deputies were speaking with family members outside the home, the man began firing indiscriminately from a travel trailer on the property, a press release states.
Shortly after 4 p.m., the man began shooting directly at one of the deputies. That deputy returned fire. Over the next several hours, the man continued firing from inside the trailer, with hundreds of rounds discharged during the course of the incident.
The standoff ended shortly after midnight when a second Chatham County deputy was involved in a second exchange of gunfire with the suspect. The man was shot and taken into custody, then transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for medical treatment. He was conscious and alert. No deputies or bystanders were injured.
The Chatham County Sheriff's Office was assisted during the incident by the Moore County Sheriff's Office, Randolph County Sheriff's Office, Guilford County Sheriff's Office, FirstHealth, Siler City Fire Department, Chatham County Emergency Communications (911 operators), Chatham County Emergency Management and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, according to the release.
'This was an extremely dangerous and unpredictable situation that could have ended very differently,' Sheriff Mike Roberson said. 'We're grateful this incredibly dangerous situation did not result in loss of life. Our deputies exercised courage and professionalism in the face of an unpredictable threat, and we're thankful for the support of our neighboring agencies that helped bring this to an end.'
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.

Carroll died as a result of injuries she sustained, and Jennifer was severely injured and airlifted to the hospital, where her leg was amputated above the knee, CBS 17 and ABC11 reported. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission confirmed in a statement sent to PEOPLE that Jennifer's right leg was also injured. However, surgeons "believed they have saved" it. Her sister-in-law Kristie Stehle told WRAL News that she was in critical condition. Carroll and Jennifer were reportedly not related, according to ABC11. Knight was 'under the influence of an impairing substance,' an arrest warrant and a N.C. Wildlife spokesperson said, per CBS17 and WRAL News. The warrant added that he 'unintentionally caused the death of' the child, per CBS 17. N.C. Wildlife Commission's Sgt Claude Smith told the outlet that Knight drove his girlfriend's Tiger Wake Boat into three swimmers. Officers then arrested him at the Cross Point Access Area. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission confirmed that Knight had been charged with Operating While Impaired and Death by Impaired Boating. 'This was a heartbreaking accident, but one that was preventable,' Sheriff Mike Roberson said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. 'Alcohol was a factor, and the decision to operate a boat while impaired had devastating consequences. We urge everyone to think twice before mixing alcohol with watercraft operation. It only takes a moment for lives to be changed forever.' He continued, adding, 'We ask the public to keep the families and loved ones of those involved in your thoughts and prayers. We are also grateful to the deputies, first responders, and medical professionals who responded swiftly and courageously in an incredibly difficult situation.' Jennifer's sister-in-law Kristie also released a statement to WRAL News. "Please keep both families in your thoughts and prayers for strength as they try to cope and heal from this terrible tragedy, one that should've never happened,' she said. 'My family and friend did everything right, but because of a series of reckless and selfish decisions, both families are now left traumatized and forever changed.' She added, 'This is a heartbreaking reminder that every choice we make can deeply affect the lives of others.' 'Please think before you act. Your decision, no matter how small they seem, can have life-altering consequences for good, loving, hardworking, Christian people who deserve peace, not pain,' Kirstie concluded. A GoFundMe page created to help with Jennifer's medical costs has so far raised $13,094 out of a $35,000 goal. 'On August 2, 2025, tragedy struck when Jennifer Stehle, a wife, mother, and WCPSS school social worker, became one of the victims in a devastating accident at Harris Lake,' the description read. 'She sustained severe injuries and now faces a long and challenging road to recovery.' They added, 'As Jennifer begins this difficult journey, her family—especially her husband, Justin—is doing everything they can to support her, but they need our help. The emotional and financial burden is immense, and any support will make a significant difference in her recovery process.' Many boaters on Harris Lake expressed their thoughts following the tragic incident. 'Drinking and driving in a car is totally unacceptable but drinking on a boat is a totally different level,' boater Craig Schnier told CBS 17. 'Absolutely absurd it's hard to believe somebody can do something of that nature, boating is supposed to be fun, it's supposed to be about being with family and friends. It's just horrible to hear." Cornyn takes swing at James, Schiff with new LETITIA Act targeting 'crooked politicians'
FIRST ON FOX: A Senate Republican wants to crack down on public officials who use their position to grow their wealth. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is set to introduce legislation that would create stiffer penalties for public officials who commit federal bank fraud, tax fraud, or loan or mortgage fraud. Cornyn's bill comes on the heels of two such instances where top officials and lawmakers were hit with allegations of mortgage fraud. Indeed, Cornyn's Law Enforcement Tools to Interdict Troubling Investments in Abodes (LETITIA) Act is named for New York Attorney General Letitia James. The Justice Department earlier this year opened an investigation into James, who successfully won a civil case last year against President Donald Trump and his Trump Organization over allegations of faulty business practices, for alleged mortgage fraud. Federal Housing Finance Director Bill Pulte alleged in a letter that James could have engaged in mortgage fraud by making false or misleading statements on property records, like a loan application that said her property in Virginia is her primary residence, a building record stating her multifamily Brooklyn property incorrectly has five residences instead of four, and a mortgage application that falsely stated James was her father's spouse. "This legislation would empower President Trump to hold crooked politicians like New York's Letitia James accountable for defrauding their constituents, violating their oath of office, and breaking the law, and I'm proud to lead my Republican colleagues in introducing it," Cornyn said in a statement. Cornyn's bill also comes after his colleague Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was similarly hit with allegations of mortgage fraud. In another letter to the Justice Department, Pulte charged that Schiff falsified bank documents and property records by listing homes in Maryland and California as his primary residence out of an effort to allegedly get more favorable loans. The bill, which is so far co-sponsored by six Senate Republicans, would increase federal statutory maximum sentences and fines for public officials who abuse their offices and violate the public trust to commit bank fraud, loan or mortgage fraud, or tax fraud. It would create new mandatory minimum sentences, including one year for bank fraud, one year for loan or mortgage fraud, and six months for tax fraud. And if a public official engages in a repeated pattern of offenses, minimum sentences increase to five years for bank or loan fraud and two years for tax fraud.
