Xiaomi to consider selling cars outside China from 2027, CEO says
The company has to focus on its domestic market in the meantime given robust orders for its SU7 and YU7 cars, he said.
Xiaomi had earlier mentioned 2027 as the first year for potential overseas shipments of its EVs.
The electric SU7 sedan has outsold Tesla's Model 3 on a monthly basis since December and the YU7 sports utility vehicle received robust orders in the first 18 hours after it went on sale last Thursday.
Xiaomi was telling YU7 customers that they will have to wait more than a year to pick up their cars, sparking a fresh wave of complaints against the company, Reuters reported on Monday.
Many commentators asked about the long waiting times and production ramp-up during the livestream, but Lei offered no clues.
"We'll strive to ramp up capacity," Lei said, without elaborating.

Sutskever to lead Safe Superintelligence after Meta poaches CEO Gross in AI talent war
Ilya Sutskever has taken over the reins of Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the artificial intelligence startup he launched last year, after losing CEO Daniel Gross to an intensifying talent war in the industry. Gross has joined Meta Platforms to lead its AI products division, sources told Reuters. The development comes as tech giants such as Meta Platforms aggressively chase high-profile acquisitions and offer multi-million-dollar pay packages to attract top talent in the race to lead the next wave of artificial intelligence. Meta had also attempted to recruit Ilya Sutskever and acquire SSI, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. "You might have heard rumors of companies looking to acquire us. We are flattered by their attention but are focused on seeing our work through," Sutskever said in a post on X. SSI raised $1 billion in cash last year to build advanced AI systems designed to safely exceed human intelligence. Gross did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, to unify the company's AI efforts, following setbacks with its Llama 4 model and key staff departures. The unit will be led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman, after Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale and ramped up efforts to recruit top AI talent. Gross and Friedman are known to be close, having cofounded the venture capital firm NFDG - named after their initials. The firm has backed high-profile startups including Safe Superintelligence, Perplexity and Figma. Apple acquired Gross's startup, Cue, in 2013 for its predictive search and AI technology, after which Gross joined the iPhone maker as a director, overseeing machine learning and artificial intelligence.

CME lean hogs drop as pork prices decline, cattle higher
CHICAGO, July 3 (Reuters) - Chicago Mercantile Exchange lean hog futures fell on Thursday on lower cash market prices, while cattle futures posted modest gains despite lower beef values as tight supplies continue to underpin the market, analysts said. Trading volumes were lighter than normal and investors squared positions ahead of the long U.S. Independence Day holiday weekend, with markets closed on Friday. Declining cash pork and cash hog prices have pressured hog futures this week and the market has "officially put in a seasonal top," said Rich Nelson, chief strategist with Allendale Inc. CME August lean hogs ended down 1.800 cents at 106.100 cents per pound after hitting their lowest level since June 3. The actively traded contract was down 3.8% in the week in a second straight weekly decline. The pork carcass cutout value fell for a seventh straight session, down $1.25 in Thursday's morning update at $109.50 per cwt, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Cattle futures closed firm on Friday as traders weighed current tight supplies and good packer margins against a downturn in cash beef prices. CME August live cattle ended 1.600 cents higher at 214.050 cents per pound and August feeder cattle futures finished the day up 0.475 cent at 309.500 cents per pound. Monday's announcement of a phased resumption of imports from Mexico promised to help bolster supplies in the coming months after concerns about New World screwworm in herds south of the border shut off U.S. imports on May 11. The choice boxed beef cutout fell $4.09 on Thursday morning to $390.77 per cwt while the select cutout fell $1.32 to $378.99 per cwt, according to the USDA. Average beef packer margins stood at $104.75 per head on Thursday, up from $31.93 a week ago, according to livestock marketing advisory service LLC. China's mineral curbs a wake-up call for India to cut reliance: GTRI
China's export curbs on critical minerals crucial for India's electronics sectors are no longer mere warnings but a wake-up call for New Delhi, underscoring the need for urgent measures like reverse-engineering of low- to mid-tech imports to cut overreliance on Beijing, think tank GTRI said on Thursday. read more China has come to have a near-monopoly on the supply of critical minerals in the world. (Photo: Reuters) China's export restrictions on key minerals essential to India's electronics sector are no longer just warnings but a wake-up call for New Delhi, highlighting the urgent need to reverse-engineer low- to mid-tech imports and reduce dependency on Beijing, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said on Thursday. China has been using its economic influence in a calculated manner to hinder India's industrial growth, GTRI noted. Over the past year, Beijing has progressively tightened its control over exports of crucial raw materials and engineering support, sending a clear message to India amid rising geopolitical tensions and shifts in global trade patterns. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Since mid-2023, China has imposed curbs on exports of critical minerals such as gallium and germanium — essential for India's electronics, EV, and defence industries. Similarly in late 2024, the restrictions were extended to graphite, dealing a direct blow to India's clean energy and battery manufacturing sectors, it said, adding that citing national security reasons, Beijing has cloaked these actions in strategic ambiguity, while tightening its grip on supply chains that India is still dependent on. 'The pressure mounted further in June 2025, when Chinese battery giant CATL reportedly directed Foxconn to withdraw all Chinese engineers from its manufacturing unit near Chennai. The move disrupted timelines and coordination at a crucial time for India's electronics and EV supply chain buildout,' GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. India's imports from China surged in FY25, while exports declined sharply. It has led to a widening trade deceit of USD 100 billion. Chinese firms now supply over 80 per cent of India's needs in laptops, solar panels, antibiotics, viscose yarn, and lithium-ion batteries, deepening strategic vulnerabilities. 'India must act to slash Chinese import dependence. There is an urgent need to do reverse-engineering of low- to mid-tech imports, domestic production incentives, and long-term investment in deep-tech manufacturing to reduce overreliance on a geopolitical rival and build economic resilience,' Srivastava said. He added that a strategic and phased approach can help reduce this dependence significantly. 'The first step is to launch a nationwide reverse-engineering initiative. Sector-specific industrial labs should be set up to deconstruct commonly imported goods and develop standardised, open-access blueprints,' he said. These designs can then be shared with Indian MSMEs for niche production and with larger firms for mass manufacturing, he suggested. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD This model, Srivastava said, combining public R&D and private production, would enable rapid substitution of many high-volume imports. 'India should also create a 'Localize-100' tracker to monitor progress on localising the top 100 low- and mid-tech imports from China,' he said. PTI RR TRB
