Now that the ICC World Test Championship celebrations are over, the Proteas Test team switch focus to this week's first of two Test matches against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
The series falls outside the new World Test Championship cycle. However, it still carries significant weight as South Africa's fringe players will get a taste of Test cricket, further widening the talent pool for head coach Shukri Conrad to choose from for the 14 Tests that lie ahead in the new cycle.
Five key Test players will be rested for the series, including Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen. In addition, captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained during the WTC final at Lord's earlier this month.

With most of the experienced heads sitting out the Zimbabwe tour, the likes of Codi Yusuf have earned their maiden Test call-ups, alongside Lesego Senokwane and Lhuan-dré Pretorius.
Yusuf, who enjoyed an impressive domestic season for the Lions and a stint with Durham in the County Championship, is well aware of the magnitude of the opportunity.
'I would say this is probably the most important game in my career so far,' Yusuf told Independent Media. 'I haven't had a taste of international cricket yet, but it would be unbelievable to go and make a mark there and show people that I can perform at the highest level.
"I personally believe in myself and feel like I can do that, and I know a lot of other people do as well. I know Shuks does as well, and that's why he would have chosen me to be part of his squad.
'I don't want to put too much pressure on the game and on the moment, but it would definitely be up there as probably the most important game in my career so far.'
Yusuf has enjoyed a career-defining few months — going from being omitted from the South Africa 'A' squad for the Caribbean tour and instead named in the South Africa Emerging team for the Bangladesh tour, to playing county cricket in the UK, and now earning a spot in the Test squad.
The 27-year-old was in the UK when he received a message from Proteas team manager Volvo Masubelele, followed by a phone call from Conrad himself to inform him of his maiden Test selection.
Like any youngster receiving a long-awaited call-up, Yusuf shared the news with his family.
'It's very weird how things can change and how quickly things can happen,' said Yusuf.
"I was supposed to be in that Emerging squad. I had applied for my visas, and just before everything got finalised, Durham came along for me to come play some county cricket. That on its own was a very proud moment for me, my family and also a very proud moment for my wife
'Shuks gave me a call after I had played about four County games and asked me how the UK was going? He asked if I was still there. I was like, 'yeah, it's good. I'm enjoying my time'.
'Actually, Volvo first sent me a message, and I was like, okay, maybe there's some sort of sniff coming my way. I think it was about two minutes later when Shuks gave me a call.
'Shuks told me that I'd been chosen to be part of the squad travelling to Zimbabwe. He just wished me congratulations and told me that I'm deserving of the opportunity and that he looks forward to having me involved in the squad.
'I was at my house when that happened, and as soon as I got off that call, I called my wife and we spoke about it — she was over the moon — and then shortly after that, I called my parents.
"They were also over the moon. My family members were there as well, and there was just a lot of cheering and celebration on the phone.
'It's been a dream for me to play for my country, so when I got that call, I was like, oh wow, okay, this is really happening. I'm very excited to get into that environment and see what it's about, and experience what it's like playing at an international level,' he concluded.
Proteas Test squad for Tour of Zimbabwe
Keshav Maharaj (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne, Codi Yusuf.

Proteas dominate in Bulawayo despite heroic hundred from Williams

While Yusuf was able to find the same kind of disconcerting bounce the Zimbabwean seamers were able to achieve on the first day and Mulder was typically accurate, both Bosch — perhaps still stiff from his batting exploits on Saturday — and Maphaka failed to build any pressure. Williams and home skipper Craig Ervine added 91 runs for the third wicket, with Ervine playing more sedately than his senior partner. Williams is playing in just his 21st Test, and while his average of 44.94 suggests he should have played more, Zimbabwe's limited Test schedule but also Williams' run-ins with the cricket authorities in his home country, have also minimised his opportunities in the five-day format. Against the current World Test champions however, he was determined to make a point, and found the right balance between attack and defence to reach a hundred, which he celebrated with plenty of enthusiasm. Before that milestone, Ervine became Maharaj's 200th Test wicket, with Verreynne easily stumping him after the left-arm spinner had bemused the left-hand batter with a lovely flighted delivery. Maharaj is the first SA spinner to reach that landmark and the ninth SA bowler to pick up 200 wickets. It is a great reward for a cricketer who has been one of the most important Proteas players in the last decade. He made his debut as part of the side that won a series in Australia in 2016, and has been through the lows of 2019 and the highs of Lord's two weeks ago. Mulder ended a 58-run fourth-wicket partnership between Williams and Wessly Madhevere, when he trapped the latter lbw for 15. Williams, who was also hit on the head by a Maphaka bouncer, was eventually dismissed by Maharaj, with Verreynne delivering a second stumping, for a superb 137 off 164 balls that included 16 fours. Facing a first innings deficit of 167 runs Zimbabwe claimed early reward when Tanaka Chivanga had Matthew Breetzke caught in the gully for one. However Mulder on 25 and Tony de Zorzi on 22 looked secure in the last hour and the home team face an uphill battle if they are to keep SA in their sights.

Sean Williams fights lone battle for Zimbabwe as Proteas take charge at Queens Sports Club

Proteas allrounder Wiaan Mulder was the chief destroyer with the ball on the second day of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. Picture: BackpagePix The Proteas assumed control of the first Test on the second day in Bulawayo, despite a marvellous century from Zimbabwean veteran Sean Williams at the Queens Sports Club. Williams' 137 was the mainstay of Zimbabwe's 251 after the Proteas declared on their overnight 418/9. The 38-year-old battled through the initial new-ball onslaught after debutant Codi Yusuf picked up his maiden Test wicket in his first over before following it up with another a couple of overs later. Kwena Maphaka may not have tasted success, but the teenager built up a good head of steam. The teenager struck Brian Bennet flush on the helmet, which forced the Zimbabwean opener to retire hurt with concussion on 19. Prince Masvaure was the concussion substitute.

Lando Norris fights off Piastri to win in Austria

Lando Norris of McLaren staved off teammate Oscar Piastri to win the Austrian GP on Sunday. Photo: AFP Image: AFP McLaren's Lando Norris showed composure on Sunday to fight off his teammate and Championship leader Oscar Piastri to claim his first win at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Norris won a must-win race and made the fight for the World Championship a two-man, all McLaren party between him and Piastri. The first 20 laps consisted of Piastri sniffing at the rear wing, overtaking Norris and then losing the position immediately after. Back and forth, the McLarens battled for pole position while leaving Ferrari's Charles Leclerc further off the pace. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ If anything, the Austrian Grand Prix showed McLaren's uncontested prowess this season - which looks to have no close rival. Their closest competitor, Max Verstappen, was forced to retire early after Kimi Antonelli crashed into him on the opening lap. The two McLaren drivers benefited off Verstappen's misfortune, extending the Championship gap even further. Norris' clutch moment performance on Sunday came at a time when he needed it the most. Had Piastri won again, the gap to the top of the Drivers Title would have become somewhat impossible - especially with the form the young Australian driver is in.
