Cowboys Rookie Tyler Booker: Not Winning at Alabama Fuels My 'Burn and Passion'
"I love to win, and I hate to lose. I lost too much this past year. I lost a lot more than I should have in college, me being at Alabama," Booker said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News. "I left without a national championship and that's something that is going to burn at me for the rest of my life. So I'm going to bring that burn and passion and desire with me to the NFL and transfer that over to wanting to win Super Bowls."
Booker, a four-star recruit, played three seasons at Alabama (2022-24), with whom he shined. In 2022, Booker played at both guard spots before becoming Alabama's full-time left guard and earning first team All-SEC honors from the Associated Press in 2023. Last season (2024), Booker started 12 games at left guard, one at left tackle and was an All-American.
As for Booker's Crimson Tide teams as a whole, Alabama went a combined 32-8 over the past three seasons, making the College Football Playoff in the 2023 season but losing a heart-breaker to eventual-national champion Michigan in the semifinal round. Last season, Alabama went 9-4 overall and 5-3 in SEC play, but Booker played in the team's ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan.
Booker, who stands at 6-foot-4 and 321 pounds, joins a Cowboys team that missed the playoffs last season at 7-10. Meanwhile, quarterback Dak Prescott missed the final nine games due to a hamstring injury, and Dallas fired head coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons, then promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.
Booker's selection marks the third time in the past four years that the Cowboys have drafted an offensive lineman in the first round; Dallas selected Oklahoma's Tyler Guyton with the No. 29 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and Tulsa's Tyler Smith with the No. 24 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. With Guyton and Smith on the left side, Booker is projected to start at right guard for the Cowboys.
"I'm very excited about training camp and putting the pads on," Booker said. "I'm really excited for the opportunity to get better, because I know there will be things I have to work on and things I have to get better at and things I have to learn. I'm very excited to go through the whole process and learn."
Booker and the Cowboys open the 2025 preseason on the road against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 9 and open the regular season on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.

Paul Skenes to start 2nd straight All-Star Game for NL and Tarik Skubal to open for AL
ATLANTA (AP) — Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes will start his second straight All-Star Game for the National League and Detroit's Tarik Skubal will open for the American League on Tuesday night at Truist Park. Major League Baseball made the announcement Saturday night. Skenes will become the first pitcher to start consecutive All-Star Games since Washington's Max Scherzer and Boston's Chris Sale in 2017 and '18. Sale started three in a row beginning in 2016. Skenes and Skubal are 1-2 in average four-seam fastball velocity among those with 1,500 or more pitches this season, Skenes at 98.2 mph and Skubal at 97.6 mph, according to MLB Statcast. Skenes worked around Juan Soto's walk in a scoreless first at Arlington, Texas, last year, throwing at up to 100.1 mph. He made the start after just 11 major league appearances, the fewest for an All-Star. Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski, with five appearances, could take over that mark Tuesday if he pitches. Skubal pitched a perfect second inning in his first All-Star appearance last year, following Baltimore's Corbin Burnes to the mound. A 23-year-old right-hander, Skenes is 4-8 despite a major league-best 2.01 ERA for the Pirates, who are last in the NL Central. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year has 131 strikeouts and 30 walks in 131 innings. Skubal, a 28-year-old left-hander, is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. He is 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA, striking out 153 and walking 16 in 121 innings.

Rockets' Fred VanVleet elected new president of NBPA, succeeding CJ McCollum
Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet was elected the new president of the National Basketball Players Association during the Board of Player Representatives meeting on Saturday. He will begin a four-year term immediately, succeeding CJ McCollum. VanVleet recently signed a two-year, $50 million contract to stay in Houston. The veteran guard won an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and was named an All-Star in 2022. He also set records for the highest-paid contract for an undrafted player. McCollum, who was recently traded to the Washington Wizards, saw his term expire. He had served as NBPA president since August 2021. In 2023, McCollum led the players' association in negotiations to complete a seven-year collective bargaining agreement. He's expected to stay involved in the NBPA, moving into an advisory role.

Juan Soto's 435-foot homer lifts Mets over Royals 3-1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Juan Soto homered to lead the New York Mets past the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Saturday. Soto's two-run shot into the right field fountains opened the scoring in the fourth. Over his last 20 games, Soto has nine home runs and 19 RBIs. Frankie Montas (2-1) threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of 19 batters while allowing a run on four hits and striking out five. Kyle Isbel and Jonathan India opened the sixth with doubles, reducing the Mets lead to 2-1. India had two of the Royals four hits, both doubles. Reed Garrett relieved Montas and permitted India to advance on a wild pickoff attempt before retiring the heart of the Royals lineup, stranding the tying run. Jeff McNeil's two-out RBI single capped the scoring in the ninth. Edwin Díaz allowed a walk in two hitless frames, earning his 19th save. Scheduled Royals starter Michael Lorenzen missed the game with illness.
