ChatGPT Tops Global App Charts, Beats Instagram and TikTok In March

NDTV27-04-2025
OpenAI's ChatGPT became the most downloaded app globally for March 2025. According to App Figures, the artificial intelligence app has surpassed social media giants like Instagram and TikTok.
This is the largest month for ChatGPT ever and the first time the app has topped the monthly download charts. In March, ChatGPT reached 46 million new downloads, up 28 percent from February, according to new data released by app intelligence company App Figures.
The data revealed that ChatGPT saw 13 million downloads on iOS and 33 million on Android, making a total of 46 million downloads in the month of March.
Instagram also achieved 46 million downloads in March, including 5 million on iOS and 41 million on Android. It was followed by TikTok with 45 million downloads, which witnessed 8 million downloads on iOS and 37 million on Android.
According to MoneyControl, between January and March 2025, the app was downloaded 148 percent more than it was during the same time in 2024.
App Figures founder and CEO Ariel Michaeli said, "It's starting to feel like ChatGPT is becoming a verb, a lot like how Google did in the 2000s, to the point where many don't think 'AI' but rather 'ChatGPT.'"
He added, "So when there's excitement about AI — even about competition like Grok, Manus AI, or DeepSeek — many who are not swimming in this topic come for AI but really download ChatGPT."
The rapid growth of ChatGPT took place after CEO Sam Altman introduced advanced image-generation capabilities. The social media platforms exploded with Studio Ghibli-inspired art.
The craze among people for Japanese anime art was so insane that Mr Altman asked users to stop making so many image requests, as the team needs rest as well.
In a post on X, he wrote, "Can y'll please chill on generating images, this is insane, our team needs sleep."
can yall please chill on generating images this is insane our team needs sleep

He also urged users to slow down because it was putting too much pressure on the system.
He said, "It's super fun seeing people love images in chatgpt. But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully won't be long! Chatgpt free tier will get 3 generations per day soon."

OpenAI CEO Brad Lightcap revealed that in just one week since ChatGPT introduced its image generation feature, over 130 million people used it and together created more than 700 million images.

Truecaller call recording on iPhones to stop from September 30: Here's how to save them now

Truecaller, the popular caller ID and spam blocking app, has announced that the call recording feature on iPhones will be discontinued starting September 30. In a statement to TechCrunch, Truecaller's head of iOS, Nakul Kabra, said that the company took the decision to do away with call recording on iOS as it wants to focus more on other features like Live Caller ID and automatic spam call blocking. Introduced in June 2023, Truecaller's call recording feature was initially available to paying subscribers on iPhone, but later expanded to the Android version of the app. Since Apple does not allow third-party apps to record calls natively, the company had to resort to using a recording line which merges with calls. According to Kabra, the method not only increased the complexity but also led to a sharp rise in costs. On X, several Truecaller users shared a notification which said, 'We are discontinuing the Call Recording feature on Truecaller for iPhone.' The pop-up message also asked users who often use the functionality to download their recordings, as everything will be deleted after September 30. To save your call recordings on iPhone, launch Truecaller on your phone and head over to the Record tab. Now, tap on the Settings icon, click on the option named Storage Preference and change it to iCloud storage. If the option is disabled, you will need to manually enable it by going to Settings > Your name > iCloud > Saved to iCloud > Turn on Truecaller. In case you want to download specific recordings, head over to the Record tab and swipe left on the recordings you want to save. Now, tap on the Share or Export option, and the app will ask you where you want to save the recording. Truecaller's decision to discontinue the call recording feature on iPhone comes at a time when Apple has introduced its very own native call recording feature.

OpenAI banned from using Claude AI just before GPT-5 launch: Here's why

Anthropic has revoked OpenAI's access to its AI models on Tuesday for allegedly violating the company's terms of service, according to a Wired report. The news of Anthropic cutting OpenAI's access to Claude comes at a time when the Sam Altman led company is rumored to be releasing its own GPT 5 model soon. Anthropic spokesperson Christopher Nulty, while confirming the development in a statement to Wired, said, 'Claude Code has become the go-to choice for coders everywhere, and so it was no surprise to learn OpenAI's own technical staff were also using our coding tools ahead of the launch of GPT 5.' 'Unfortunately, this is a direct violation of our terms of service.' he added. Meanwhile, Nulty stated that Anthropic will 'continue to ensure OpenAI has API access for the purposes of benchmarking and safety evaluations as is standard practice across the industry.' OpenAI was reportedly plugging Claude into its own internal tools using special developer access (APIs), instead of the chat interface, which allowed the ChatGPT maker to run tests to evaluate the rival AI models' capability on tasks like coding and creative writing. OpenAI was also able to check how Claude responded to safety related prompts in categories like CSAM, self harm and defamation. The results from these tests reportedly helped OpenAI compare the behavior of its own models under similar conditions and make adjustments as needed. Anthropic's commercial terms of service state that customers are not allowed to use its AI models to 'build a competing product or service, including to train competing AI models or resell the Service.' OpenAI's Chief Communications Officer Hannah Wong, in a statement to Wired, said, 'It's industry standard to evaluate other AI systems to benchmark progress and improve safety. While we respect Anthropic's decision to cut off our API access, it's disappointing considering our API remains available to them.' Notably, this isn't the first time that Anthropic has cut off a competitor's access to its AI model. Earlier in the year, the company had restricted AI coding startup Windsurf from having direct access to its models after reports started emerging that the company was being acquired by OpenAI. Anthropic's Chief Science Officer Jared Kaplan had then talked about revoking Windsurf's access to Claude, saying, 'I think it would be odd for us to be selling Claude to OpenAI.'
