30 new AC e-buses roll in, Aapli Bus EV fleet to grow to 260
2
Nagpur: The city's push towards cleaner and greener public transport is gaining pace, with 30 new air-conditioned electric buses arriving this week under the much-delayed 250 e-bus project sanctioned in 2023 by then deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
These buses will soon be inducted into the Aapli Bus service, increasing the electric vehcile fleet from 230 to 260.
The Aapli Bus fleet now comprises a total of 539 buses, including 150 midi buses, 45 mini buses, and 237 standard diesel buses procured under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Out of the 230 electric midi buses already in service, 184 are air-conditioned while 46 are non-AC.
Many of the 237 standard diesel buses have surpassed their 15-year lifespan. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has already begun phasing them out. In the first phase, 123 such ageing buses were scrapped, and more are expected to be replaced gradually as electric buses arrive.
In 2023, Fadnavis sanctioned Rs136 crore for the procurement of 250 AC e-buses. However, the project was marred by delays, including the enforcement of the model code of conduct during the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections.

The Rs550 crore project finally gained traction in 2024 when NMC awarded the contract to Hansa Vahan India Private Limited, which partnered with EKA Mobility for the execution.
"NMC twice floated tenders for this project. Hyderabad-based Olectra and Nagpur-based Hansa Vahan India Pvt Ltd emerged as top contenders. Hansa's competitive bid of Rs62.84 per km was significantly lower than Olectra's Rs77.91, leading to the selection of the local firm.
NMC issued the Letter of Award on October 11, 2023, and gave the firm 300 days to supply and operate all 250 buses," said a senior transport official.
As per the Request for Proposal (RFP), the selected contractor is to operate the 250 air-conditioned electric buses under this scheme at a cost of Rs62.91 per kilometre. The state govt is offering a subsidy of Rs55 lakh per bus, while the remaining cost will be borne by the operator.
NMC will pay the operator based on the kilometres operated.
The official added that NMC has already received the first lot of 30 e-buses from the company. Construction of depots is underway at Wathoda and Khapri. Meanwhile, the company has been temporarily allotted space at the Matrishakti E-Depot in Lakadganj for setting up a charging station, allowing it to begin operations while permanent infrastructure is developed.
In addition, the civic body is expecting the first lot of e-buses next month as part of the 150 sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri e-Bus Sewa scheme. Besides this, NMC has also sent a proposal to the PMe-Bus Sewa scheme to allocate another 240 e-buses.
"By next year, NMC plans to phase out the remaining JNNURM standard buses. By 2029, our target is to convert the entire city fleet to electric, achieving zero emissions in public transport operations," the official said.

‘Sooner or later…': Paytm founder sees impact of AI on jobs as ‘inevitable'; says artificial intelligence will also create new roles
The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs is "inevitable", according to founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who said AI will become part of routine business processes sooner rather than later. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Sooner or later we will have to start using AI as an employee or even as a CFO,' Sharma said at an AI-focused event in New Delhi. He said AI will eventually perform most tasks currently done by humans, and stressed the need to build core products instead. Sharma also outlined a broader vision for the company — to move beyond its fintech roots and become an AI-first firm, according to an ET report. Although AI will automate several human functions, Sharma said it will also create fresh roles in the workforce. The remarks come at a time when Paytm's parent, One97 Communications, is undergoing job cuts. ET reported last month that the company had laid off an unspecified number of employees. The overall sales team headcount dropped by about 3,500 in the March 2024 quarter, taking the total to 36,521. This decline was largely linked to the Reserve Bank of India's restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank operations. In the March quarter, Paytm posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 540 crore, compared with Rs 550 crore in the year-ago period. In June, Paytm stood third in the UPI rankings with 1.27 billion transactions worth Rs 1.34 lakh crore — accounting for 6.9% of total volume and 5.6% of value. PhonePe remained in the lead with 8.55 billion transactions valued at Rs 11.99 lakh crore. As part of its AI initiatives, Sharma announced a new passbook feature that would use Paytm's data to generate a rap song summarising monthly expenses. Though no launch date has been shared, Sharma said it would be made available to users soon. Paytm had earlier partnered with US-based AI startup Perplexity to introduce AI-powered search capabilities in its app.

Raw material crunch halts projects, labourers in limbo
Mangaluru: The acute shortage of sand and laterite stones in Dakshina Kannada has delayed several real estate projects, putting thousands of workers' jobs at risk. Developers say they are running out of existing stock, and many have already stopped plastering works. The real estate industry employs thousands of unskilled and skilled labourers. The shortage has heavily impacted it. Naveen Cardoza, MD, Marian Projects Private Limited, noted that his ongoing two projects were slowed down due to the shortage. "It has been 45 days without supply. How can one go ahead with the work? It is not possible when there is no raw material. If the situation further worsens, all builders will have to stop their ongoing projects," he said. "The irony is that raw material is unavailable both in the black market and the legal market. If the deadlock continues, it will affect the local economy. The govt should come up with legal ways to make these raw materials available at the earliest," stressed Rohan Monteiro, MD of Rohan Corporation. He said he deferred 10 upcoming projects due to the ongoing crisis, which lasted 45 days. Real estate promoters further pointed out that all the construction workers returned to work after a brief summer vacation to the site. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sunteck Launches Windcrest Collection 2 & 3 BHKs from ₹1.27 Cr* Sunteck Sky Park Learn More Undo "We will have to send them back again, or they themselves will go to places which have job opportunities, leaving us further crippled. If we buy M-sand and stones as alternatives to laterite, the cost of construction will rise, which will directly impact home buyers," pointed out another realtor, adding that currently many have stopped plastering work as it needs a good amount of sand. "The shortage will delay projects. However, there will be no extension given by the Real Estate Regulatory Authority of Karnataka (RERA)," they stated. Another realtor, who is currently helping in drafting the sand and laterite stone policy for the region, said that laterite stones are available only in coastal areas and some parts of Malnad. "It was categorised as minor minerals, and a separate policy was planned in 2015. However, even after a decade, there is no concrete policy for it," the realtor pointed out.

Construction workers to hold protest march tomorrow
Mangaluru: Karnataka State Construction Workers Federation Dakshina Kannada district president, Vasantha Achari, said that the forum will hold a protest march in the city on Monday, demanding an uninterrupted supply of sand and laterite stones in the district. Achari told reporters here on Saturday, that over 1.2 lakh construction workers registered through the labour department and an equal number of unregistered labourers in the district are jobless due to the sand and laterite stone shortage crisis. "Due to the current shortage of laterite stone and sand, construction and building activities came to a halt permanently in some places and partially in others. Workers in the construction industry have been without work for over a month, making it difficult for them and their families to sustain their livelihoods. People put their plans to build homes on hold, causing distress. The lack of raw materials indirectly affected truck workers, shopowners, labourers, traders and financial institutions on a large scale," Achari said, demanding a govt policy to make sand and laterite stones available for construction. He said the Sand Bazaar app of the mines and geology department is not functioning properly. Meanwhile, sand from other places is expensive, costing around Rs 22,000 per load. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription!
