Rays score early and often in dominant win over Tigers

The shortstop's two-run single with two outs helped the Rays win for the second consecutive game against the Tigers, who entered the day 19 games over .500 with a .623 winning percentage.
Tampa Bay, which tops baseball with a 22-8 mark dating back to May 20, swept three games from the then-best New York Mets last weekend in Queens.
Danny Jansen, Junior Caminero and Christopher Morel each hit solo homers, while Yandy Diaz extended his hitting streak to 12 games in a 2-for-4 outing with a double and a run.
In winning his second consecutive impressive start, Ryan Pepiot (5-6) yielded only one run on three hits in five innings. He fanned seven, walked two and hit two batters.
Detroit's Jake Rogers (groundout), Jahmai Jones (double) and Dillon Dingler (sacrifice fly) drove in runs.
Opener Brant Hurter (2-3) surrendered four unearned runs in two-thirds of the first inning before yielding to Sawyer Gipson-Long for 6 1/3 innings (four runs, six hits).
The Rays sent nine men to the plate and scored four times in the first due to a passed ball on a strikeout of Brandon Lowe, who raced safely to first with one out rather than two.
Hurter's wildness became his undoing after Jonathan Aranda's double, issuing two walks (a run-producing one by Josh Lowe), hitting Jose Caballero with a pitch for a 2-0 lead and allowing Walls' single.
Brandon Lowe moved his hitting streak to 10 games with a RBI single to plate Diaz in the second, but Detroit answered with Rogers' groundout to make it 5-1.
The home offense kept at it in the fourth as Jansen and Caminero belted solo homers off Gipson-Long for a 7-1 lead.
In the seventh, Morel smashed a Statcast-projected 434-foot homer to left for a seven-run advantage.
Pinch hitters Jones and Dingler had RBIs in the eighth for the final margin.

Matchup of All-Stars, NLs top teams when Cubs, Brewers open series

It seems only appropriate that a three-game series between the teams with the two best records in the National League begins on Monday with a stellar pitching matchup. The Chicago Cubs will send All-Star left-hander Matthew Boyd (11-3, 2.20 ERA) to face the host Milwaukee Brewers, who will send All-Star right-handed rookie Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 2.45) to the mound. The teams are tied atop of the NL Central with identical 62-43 records. Chicago took two of three from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, while Milwaukee avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-2 win over the visiting Miami Marlins on Sunday. The Cubs have won three of the teams' first five meetings this season, including two of three in Milwaukee in early May. Chicago left fielder Ian Happ is looking forward to this week's return trip. "It'll be a great atmosphere," Happ said. "We're going up there just trying to play our game and good baseball. And I think there'll be a lot of noise around it. But we're just gonna play another series in July." Boyd will take the mound after tossing seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals last Tuesday. The 34-year-old Boyd enters Monday's contest with a career-best run of 23 consecutive scoreless innings, which is the longest active streak in the majors. "Somehow he's just gotten better in this stretch, and he's just overwhelming hitters," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. "It's just quality pitch after quality pitch. I think anytime you get in a streak like this, that's what you're doing. There's no let up. No matter what's going on, it's a quality pitch. It just keeps coming at you. Milwaukee first baseman Andrew Vaughn is a career 1-for-8 against Boyd, who is 1-1 with a 9.95 ERA in 12 2/3 innings over three career starts versus the Brewers. Chicago third baseman Matt Shaw enters the game on a tear after struggling in the weeks before the All-Star break. Shaw extended his hitting streak to a career-high nine games on Sunday and is batting .444 (12-for-27) with two doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs during that span. The rookie will look to continue the hot streak against Misiorowski, who is making his seventh career start. Misiorowski, 23, struck out seven over 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Seattle Mariners last Tuesday. He was pulled after 64 pitches, and manager Pat Murphy said the team is monitoring his workload. "Obviously, I want to go six or seven (innings)," Misiorowski said. "But they're looking deeper, season-wise. I'm always going to be competitive and want to get as deep as I can, but it is what it is." Misiorowski is making his first appearance against the Cubs. He has 40 strikeouts in his first six starts covering 29 1/3 innings. "He's just broken the shell, man," Murphy said. "He's just out of the egg, all arms and legs. He's still got gooey stuff coming off him. He's something special." While the Brewers' starting rotation is overflowing with talented options, the team's offense has also risen to the occasion. Center fielder Jackson Chourio, 21, extended his hitting streak to 20 games on Sunday, becoming the 13th major leaguer 21 years or younger since 1901 to have a 20-plus game hit streak. The franchise record is Paul Molitor's 39-game hitting streak in 1987.

NBA Trade Rumors: Dallas Mavericks Linked to $32,951,083 Detroit Pistons Star in Bold Trade Proposal Involving P.J. Washington

As NBA teams fine-tune their rosters ahead of the 2025–26 season, the Dallas Mavericks find themselves navigating a critical stretch without one of their biggest stars. With Kyrie Irving expected to miss significant time due to a torn ACL, the Mavericks are actively exploring ways to fortify their backcourt rotation. One intriguing trade scenario gaining traction involves acquiring Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey in exchange for forward P.J. Washington—a deal that could shake up both teams' short- and long-term plans. Trade Details and Rationale The hypothetical deal, proposed by Cem Yolbulan of Detroit Jock City, is designed to give Dallas an infusion of young talent while allowing Detroit to gain a seasoned forward on an expiring contract. Team Receives Mavericks Jaden Ivey Pistons P.J. Washington Yolbulan explains the logic behind the move by stating: 'If Detroit is hesitant to offer an extension, moving Ivey now could be a viable option.' (H/t: Sporting News) Dallas Mavericks' Urgent Backcourt Needs Jaden Ivey (Image via Getty) Irving's absence creates a glaring gap for Dallas. While the franchise signed D'Angelo Russell to a two-year, $11.7 million deal, questions remain about depth and consistency in the backcourt. The current rotation includes Klay Thompson, Dante Exum, Brandon Williams, Jaden Hardy, and Max Christie—names with upside but also uncertainty. Acquiring Jaden Ivey could help stabilize that unit. At just 23 years old, the Purdue alum has already shown flashes of star potential despite a recent injury setback. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Emergency Generators in Latacunga: (Prices May Surprise You) Emergency Generator | Search Ads Search Now Undo A broken left fibula limited him to just 27 games last season, but his career numbers remain impressive. For the Dallas Mavericks , it's a calculated risk that could yield high rewards if Ivey returns to full strength. What P.J. Washington Brings to Detroit In return, the Detroit Pistons would receive P.J. Washington, a 26-year-old forward who has been a consistent contributor for Dallas. Averaging solid numbers and defensive versatility, Washington has been part of the Dallas Mavericks' core for over a season. However, with his contract expiring, Dallas may not be willing to commit long-term—making him a logical trade chip. Valued at $14.2 million annually, Washington could fill a frontcourt need in Detroit while giving the team additional flexibility next summer. Outlook for Both Teams • Dallas adds a young playmaker who can potentially grow into a cornerstone alongside Luka Doncic and others in the long term. • Detroit gains a dependable veteran presence who can slot in immediately and possibly become a mentor to the younger core. While still a mock trade, the proposal highlights a realistic path forward for two teams with very different priorities—Dallas looking to stay competitive in the West without Kyrie, and Detroit seeking lineup balance and contractual clarity. With Byron Buxton in question, Twins shoot for series win vs. Nats

The most important moment for the Minnesota Twins on Sunday might happen well before the first pitch. That's because All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton is scheduled to undergo testing on his injured left side before the Twins take on the Washington Nationals in Minneapolis. The 31-year-old Buxton left Saturday's game because of left-side soreness. Washington added insult to injury when it cruised to a 9-3 win over the Twins to even the three-game series. Buxton might not be in the Twins' lineup for the rubber match. Either way, Minnesota is eager for a series win after dropping its first two series after the All-Star break. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said the series finale offers a chance for a fresh start. "Not the game we intended to play," Baldelli said. "(Friday's) game was a brilliant game, and then we came in (Saturday) and played like this. I'd like to win the series (on Sunday) and get back to playing complete baseball." The lineup might be incomplete. Buxton went 0-for-3 on Saturday and left the game after he experienced pain. The team hopes the injury isn't serious, but history offers some cause for consternation because Buxton has dealt with a spate of injuries throughout his career. This season, he is hitting .282 with 23 homers, 59 RBIs and 17 steals in 85 games. "He was actually, what I would say, is relatively upbeat," Baldelli said. "I talked to him during the game, I popped upstairs to check on him. ... "We're just going to get him imaged (Sunday) morning just to see what we're dealing with. He felt it more running than anything else. When you have some soreness in your side and you don't feel it as much swinging and you don't feel it as much -- on the offensive end, you feel it running -- that's kind of a unique thing. I'm not going to speculate any more than that. We're going to get him looked at (Sunday)." Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin (7-5, 4.81 ERA) will take the mound against the team that he grew up supporting. Irvin was born in the nearby suburb of Bloomington, Minn., and starred at Jefferson High School before moving on to the Oklahoma Sooners. Irvin is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in one career start against the Twins, a 3-2 Minnesota win on May 22, 2024. That was a home game for the Nationals, and this will be the first time he has pitched in Minnesota. "It means everything," Irvin said. "It's important to put it all in perspective. This is what got me here: Growing up a Twins fan, falling in love with the Twins and just how much they meant to me in developing my passion for baseball. "The people around me that I grew up playing with, I get to see a lot of my buddies from high school. I get to be around my parents and my family, just everybody who supported me along the way. It's all come full circle, and (it's) super, super special." The Twins have not announced a starter and plan to go with a bullpen game on Sunday. One pitcher who figures to receive a good amount of work is rookie right-hander Travis Adams, who is 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in three relief appearances. Adams has allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out six over nine innings. He never has faced the Nationals.
