BJP core committee lays out road plan for local body polls

The Hindu6 days ago
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) core committee, which met here on Monday, reportedly saw a better chance of the party emerging as a reliable third alternative to the Left Democratic Front- United Democratic Front 'revolving door' politics in the 2025 local body polls and the 2026 Assembly elections.
A BJP insider said the Congress' 'lacklustre' showing in the Nilambur Assembly byelection had buoyed the party's hopes for a better showing in the elections that lay ahead.
He said the core committee's reading was that the Congress had failed to cash in on the 'anti-incumbency' anger against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government fully.
Later, former BJP State president K. Surendran told a press conference that the Congress had merely held on to a traditional stronghold wrested from it by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) using an Independent candidate.
He said the voting pattern in Nilambur revealed the Opposition United Democratic Front's (UDF) inherent electoral weaknesses, which the BJP would exploit to its full advantage.
Mr. Surendran said the BJP was initially not keen on contesting the Nilambur bypoll at the fag end of the second Pinarayi Vijayan government. 'The bypoll was of scarce political or electoral consequence. Still, the BJP kept its options open,' he said.
Mr. Surendran said the core committee meeting had finalised the contours of a roadmap for emerging as a potent electoral force in the local body elections. He stated that the BJP was open to tactical alliances without compromising its core ideology or national agenda.
BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar and leaders P.K. Krishnadas, V. Muraleedharan, Sobha Surendran, and M.T. Ramesh were among those present.

Nadda inaugurates six BJP offices in Delhi and Haryana

BJP ideologue Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee never clung to positions of power but remained unwavering in his commitment to ideology and even sacrificed his life for it, party national president and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said on Sunday (July 6, 2025). Mr. Nadda was addressing party workers and leaders after digitally inaugurating six new party offices in Delhi and Haryana. Speaking on the occasion, he pointed out that the day carried an emotional significance to the BJP, as it coincidentally marked the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Emphasising Mookerjee's unwavering commitment to ideology, Mr. Nadda said, "He never compromised on his beliefs. India will always remain indebted to him, especially for his role in ensuring that West Bengal remained a part of the country." The Union Minister further highlighted India's strong stance on national security, referring to the surgical strikes after Uri and airstrikes after Pulwama. Citing the terror attacks that killed 26 people at Pahalgam in April, he noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed a response "beyond imagination", which led to Operation Sindoor that destroyed nine terrorist camps in Pakistan. Mr. Nadda congratulated BJP workers, who "made history" by helping to form a party government in Delhi after 27 years and to secure a third consecutive term in Haryana.

Muharram procession taken out in Srinagar amid heavy security, curbs

SRINAGAR: Thousands of Shia mourners wearing black clothes on Sunday took out an Ashura procession in the city here to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussain on the tenth day of Muharram. The procession was taken out in Srinagar from Bota Kadal in the Lal Bazar area of downtown Srinagar to Zadibal. Some of the participants were seen thumping chests amid chanting of pro-Islamic slogans. Many of them were also carrying religious flags. J&K L-G Manoj Sinha visited Bota Kadal in Lal Bazar before the procession started, officials said. Sinha distributed water among the Shia mourners before the procession began from Bora Kadala and culminated at Zadibal Imambara, the officials said. Senior BJP leaders, including former J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina and general secretary (Org) Ashok Koul, also participated in the procession. National Conference president and three-time ex-J&K CM Farooq Abdullah also took part in the celebrations. The administration had issued strict guidelines to organisers to prevent the display of flags, banners or photographs associated with banned militant organisations, whether national or international, during Muharram processions. They had also warned against delivering anti-national or inflammatory speeches. Police had set up kiosks on various routes in Srinagar, where Shia mourners were being given water and other refreshments. The 10th Muharram processions concluded peacefully across the Valley amid tight security arrangements. Notably, it was the third consecutive year that the 10th Muharram procession was allowed in Srinagar.

Harish spreading canards, we know when to start motors: Uttam

Hyderabad: Ina sharp rebuttal to BRS leader T Harish Rao, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday accused the Revanth Reddy government's predecessor of conspiring to mislead Palamuru farmers. He asserted that while the Congress government's intention is to support farmers during harvest, BRS leaders harbour 'evil intentions' of terrorising and confusing them every season. Responding to the BRS leader's demand to start the motors of Kannepalli Pump House, Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that the BRS was 'constantly conspiring to cheat and worry farmers in the state,' and was 'spreading conspiratorial lies.' He claimed that 'Harish Rao has become accustomed to spreading lies more than Goebbels.' Uttam highlighted that last year, alongside the monsoon, Telangana farmers cultivated a record amount of paddy in the recent Yasangi season, an unprecedented achievement in India's history. 'Forgetting that fact, Harish Rao is speaking falsehood,' he said. Uttam reminded that BRS had spread similar lies even before the Rabi season, making 'devious attempts to create panic among the farmers.' He detailed the state's agricultural success, noting that in the last monsoon, farmers cultivated paddy on 66.7 lakh acres and harvested 153.5 lakh metric tonnes of paddy. In Rabi, Telangana farmers cultivated paddy on 60 lakh acres, achieving a yield of 130 lakh metric tonnes. 'The record of achieving 283 lakh metric tonnes of paddy in a single year in the history of the country was achieved under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy during the Congress government,' Uttam Kumar Reddy asserted. The Irrigation Minister further stated that the Medigadda barrage had collapsed due to the 'incompetence, negligence, and mismanagement of the BRS.' He added that the Annaram and Sundilla barrages also remain in a dangerous condition. The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) found fault with the construction of Medigadda using secant piles technology. 'Like Medigadda, the Annaram and Sundilla barrages have become dangerous because they were built using the same secant piles foundation technology. They are in an unusable condition,' he explained. Uttam questioned, 'Have you forgotten that out of the 160 TMCs of water lifted from Medigadda to Annaram, Sundilla, and to Yellampally in the past, about 57 TMCs of water was again released into the sea by lifting the gates and pouring public money into the river?' Uttam affirmed that the Congress government would take appropriate decisions on these projects as per the advice and suggestions of the NDSA, stating, 'We do not need to believe the words of Harish Rao.'
