Diu set to host inaugral Khelo India Beach Games

The Hindu18-05-2025
After a 12-day stay in Patna for the Youth Games, the Khelo India caravan now moves to Diu for the Beach Games set to kick off on Monday, May 19, on the Ghoghla Beach.
Over 1000 athletes, men and women, from 36 States and Union Territories will be participating in six medal events: beach soccer, beach volleyball, sepak takraw, beach kabaddi, pencak silat, and open water swimming. Tug of war and Mallakhamb will be there as demonstration sports.
This is the first time that the Beach Games are being held under the Khelo India initiative. Last year, Diu hosted the Games – organised by the local administration of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Diu and Daman – which saw Madhya Pradesh emerge as the winner.
'Every Khelo India event is a new opportunity for young boys and girls. Not just a sports platform, Khelo India events showcase the nation's capability to stage a repertoire of sports. Not just spotting talent, Khelo India is also generating awareness on sports and fitness,' said Mayank Srivastava, the Deputy Director General of the Sports Authority of India, ahead of the six-day tournament.

Sportspersons like Sakshi Punia (kabaddi), Joginder Singh (hockey), Trupti Murgunde (badminton), Mamta Prabhu (table tennis) and Ravi Kumar Katulu (weightlifter) will also be present at the ceremony.
A range of cultural programmes are also planned, including Gujrat's folk dance Garba, Northern India's Bhangra, Southern India's Kathakali and East's Bihu. Popular Gujrati singer Geeta Ben Rabari is also set to stage a musical performance.
With Pearls – the dolphin mascot inspired by the mammal which is a constant feature at the Nagoa beach – cheering on with a surfboard in its hands, the athletes will hope this inaugural edition of the tournament under the Khelo India umbrella augurs well for the Beach Games community.

Not quite cricket but Pak teams allowed India visit

New Delhi: There will be no bar on Pakistan sports teams travelling to India for international events despite the low in bilateral ties following the Pahalgam terror attack and India responding with Operation Sindoor, sports ministry sources said on Thursday. Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya. (ANI) That decision included an agreement that Pakistan teams will be allowed to play ICC tournaments hosted by India at a neutral venue. Cross-border political tension saw the Rohit Sharma-led side play the Champions Trophy, hosted by Pakistan, in the UAE and emerge winners. While the union sports ministry is willing to let the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) address the neutral venue issue – Pakistan will play their games in the ICC Women's World Cup being staged by India in late September in Colombo – hockey will be different. The Asia Cup hockey is scheduled to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29 to September 7 and Pakistan will be free to travel for it, the ministry sources said. 'For international sports no one is barred from going,' the sources said. The government also is conscious of its build-up to bidding for the 2036 Olympics and would not like any step to hurt its image as a welcoming country for sports. 'It won't be nice in the international sports world (if there are any such restrictions),' the officials said. The cabinet approved the new sports policy this week which the union sports ministry is confident will usher in a '360 degrees reform' in Indian sports. The sports ministry has prepared a roadmap for the implementation of the wide-ranging aspects addressed by the policy document and a monitoring group comprising the sports, education and culture ministries will be set up for development of sports at the grassroots. While the government acknowledges the role states have in education, and sports in these institutions, the ministry sources also said: 'Sports is a state subject but international sports is a central subject.' A Khelo India Water Sports Festival will be held in Srinagar's Dal Lake from August 21-23.

Travel time to Jaipur cut as NHAI opens Bandikui link road from Delhi-Mumbai E-way

NEW DELHI: The travel to Jaipur from Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad has become shorter and faster with the NHAI on Wednesday opening a link road — Bandikui-Jaipur — from the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. This will reduce travel time from Delhi to 2.5-3 hours compared to the current 3.5-4 hours. The link takes off at Bandikui, 170 km from Sohna — from where the expressway starts. NHAI officials said as safety audit has been completed, traffic is being allowed on the link road as trial. In the next few days, all systems will be in place and tolling will also start, they said. To reach Jaipur, commuters earlier had to leave the expressway at Dausa and take NH-21 — it took at least one and half hours to cover the stretch as it passes through villages and towns. 'Now, people can seamlessly get out of the expressway and take the Bandikui-Jaipur spur, which is a 67-km four-lane access-controlled highway. The maximum allowed speed on this link for cars is 100-120 kmph. Enough signage has been put up to inform and guide commuters,' said an NHAI official. Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said the greenfield link has been constructed at a capital cost of Rs 2,016 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'This strategically significant project provides direct, access-controlled connectivity between the Delhi–Vadodara Expressway and Jaipur, addressing the lack of a direct route that previously compelled commuters to take longer, fuel-intensive journeys,' he said. The minister said the new spur will reduce travel time between Delhi and Jaipur and also significantly improve mobility, easing congestion on NH-48 and NH-21. This link was added later to the flagship Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project considering growth of Jaipur-bound traffic. While the new link brings down the distance between Delhi and Jaipur by 20 km, there will be more relief for commuters by Dec when the first 9-km stretch of the DND Flyway-KMP interchange on the expressway becomes operational. People heading from Ghaziabad, Noida and East Delhi will be able to travel to Jaipur seamlessly. The entire stretch of 260 km between the DND flyway and Jaipur via the Bandikui link can be completed in two-and-a-half hours.
