Bihar woman's memoir becomes lesson in Kerala class VI textbook
Speaking to TNIE, Dharaksha, who arrived in Kerala 12 years ago in 2013, says, 'My father came before us. For him, Kerala has been home for the past 25 years. We now live at Muppathadam Thandirikkal Colony in a rented house.'
According to her, the events that led to her writing getting selected for the Malayalam textbook happened after a small piece of news appeared in a vernacular daily in 2023.
'Narayanan Mash from Palakkad happened to come across the news. It was a story about a function held at GHS Binanipuram, where I now teach craft and also Malayalam under the Roshini project,' she says. 'Narayanan Mash contacted Jayashree teacher associated with the Roshini project at my school. She sent him my location and address. He, along with his team, came to my house and held discussions with me for an entire day. It was during the discussions that he asked me to write something in Malayalam for a book,' says Dharaksha. She agreed and wrote a piece in a letter format addressed to her friend in Bihar. 'In the letter, I talked about my life in Kerala, achievements, important events and the people here. I sent the write-up to Narayanan Mash. It was then edited and finally selected as a lesson in the Class VI Malayalam textbook after thorough scrutiny,' she adds.
According to her, the friend she addressed her letter to is a girl she studied with in Class VII in Darbhanga. 'She is now married. That would have been my fate too if I hadn't come to Kerala. When I arrived and joined Class V at GHS Binanipuram, it was difficult for me to study.

No fellowship amount for seven months, charge PhD scholars in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: Due to technical issues, around 12 scholars pursuing PhD programmes at Government Arts College (Autonomous) in Coimbatore have not received their Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) amount for the past seven months. Scholars raised concerns that they would have to spend their own money for research, attending seminars, and purchasing chemicals. A PhD scholar told TNIE that over ten scholars in the science and arts departments who cleared the JRF of UGC NET are currently pursuing their PhD programmes. "Since January, we have not received the monthly fellowship amount of Rs 35,000. Although we complained several times, the college administration simply states they are taking steps to resolve the issue, without explaining the reason for the delay," she said. She expressed concern that without the fellowship amount, they have been forced to use their own money for research activities, seminar participation, and chemical acquisitions, adding that they were unable to meet their expenses. She said that this issue is only in this college, and she urged officials to take immediate action. According to sources from the college, the fellowship amount can only be approved for scholars by the nodal officer, who checks monthly research activities using the Scholarship and Fellowship Management Portal (SFMP). Last December, the nodal officer from the mathematics department was replaced by one from the Tamil department. However, the college administration should have obtained formal approval from the UGC by sending a request letter before making this change. The administration failed to do this, making the new nodal officer unable to login to SFMP. After that, the administration allegedly requested the UGC to allow the new nodal officer to log in through mail. Even though the nodal officer received a new login ID and password from UGC for the portal a few months ago, she has been unable to log in due to a technical issue. The administration allegedly decided to send a teaching faculty member to UGC's office at New Delhi directly to resolve this issue," sources added. When contacted, College Principal MR Yezhili told TNIE that they are taking steps to ensure scholars receive their fellowship amount soon.

Arches for Samayapuram & Vayalur temples in Tiruchy delayed
TIRUCHY: Questioning the delay in construction of a new entrance arch despite its groundbreaking ceremony having been held months ago, devotees and local residents seek the HR&CE department to respect visitors' sentiments and immediately complete the 'symbolic gateway' to the Mariamman temple in Samayapuram. A similar plea has been placed in regard to the Subramanya Swamy temple in Vayalur, whose entrance arch collapsed while under construction in February this year. The Mariamman temple, located near the Tiruchy-Chennai NH, had an entrance arch featuring carved idols of the principal deity of Mariamman, besides that of Murugan and Ganesha, installed near the Samayapuram four-road junction. The structure of 40 years, however, suffered damage after a truck en route to Manachanallur via the Samayapuram service road rammed into its base on August 3, 2024. The temple authorities inspected the site and brought down the entire structure to avoid danger to the public. Following this, a new arch was planned to be constructed, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held. No work, however, was carried since. Pointing out a year having nearly passed since the old arch was brought down, R Chellappan, a shopkeeper, said, 'Every morning, before opening my shop, I offered prayers at the arch. Further, for many truck drivers and vehicles heading to other districts, it was a sacred starting point. We miss it deeply.' Devotees also point to the Subramanya Swamy temple in Kumaravayalur being in a similar situation. As part of a Rs 4-crore renovation project, a 25-foot-high and 40-foot-wide decorative entrance arch was being constructed on the Vayalur-Adavathur road to replace an ageing one at the Chola-period temple. On February 6, 2025, the new arch, however, suddenly collapsed. R Kalaiselvan, a resident of Vasan Nagar and a frequent visitor to the Vayalur temple, said, 'The arch served as a landmark. Without it, many first-time visitors miss the turn to the temple and have to either enquire their way to it or return after passing it. It is more than just architecture and is part of the temple's identity. Months have passed but nothing has been done. The long delay in reconstruction shows neglect of our cultural heritage.' When contacted, an HR&CE official in Tiruchy told TNIE, 'We are looking for a new donor [to reconstruct the entrance arch] to the Vayalur temple. At Samayapuram, the arch base work has begun but it has been paused due to the Aadi footfall. Work will resume and be completed soon.'

350 deaths in four years: Thiruvananthapuram dist administration to launch drowning prevention drive
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With drowning death tolls hitting over 350 between 2021 and 2025, the Thiruvananthapuram district administration has decided to launch a drowning prevention campaign. Being organised in connection with the World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25, the 'Jeevanam- Jeevanodu Jagrathayode Yudham' campaign will be launched by Education Minister V Sivankutty at Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom, on Friday. 'The number of drowning deaths in the district is very concerning, especially when you consider that the deaths due to natural calamities in the district were not as high as this,' district collector Anu Kumari told TNIE. Adding that these figures have not included the drowning deaths at sea, she mentioned that the campaign aims to inculcate proper water conscious practices, particularly among the youth, as they have a major proportion in the death toll. Envisioned in multiple phases, the project will see the convergence of various departments, including fire and rescue, education, revenue and local self-government. The first phase will be awareness about drowning accidents, which will include actual demonstrations. The second phase aims to have increased deployment of services, including lifeguards and infrastructure at critical points. The district administration has submitted the project to the Union government for allocation of funds, said the collector. 'Out of the 41 quays in the districts, we have identified over 15 sites, where drowning incidents regularly happen, with the help of fire force officers,' disaster management deputy collector Sreekumar G told TNIE. He added that data from the police will also be studied to identify the more drowning-prone areas, and warning boards will be place there. Jointly organised by the district administration and district disaster management authority, the launch ceremony will be presided over by Vattiyoorkavu MLA V K Prasanth. The collector, deputy mayor P K Raju, deputy commissioner T Farash, sub-collector Alfred O V, and other school officials will attend the event. Officials have also sent a letter to the deputy director of education to take a drowning prevention pledge in all schools of the district on Friday.
