How to use AI and still stay true to your values

As AI development and usage continue to grow, people are encountering a fundamental question: What is my relationship with these AI tools as a human being?
A global survey by Boston Consulting Group indicated that 43% of people are excited about AI's impact on lifestyle and workplace-based issues, while 28% are conflicted and 29% are concerned.
AI is a powerful tool that uses lots of resources (electricity, data centers, water and more), which then affects how many resources get allocated to it, where the resources come from, and who gets to make these decisions.
Humanness includes the limitations, strengths and compassion that people use to navigate through the complexities of life as an individual and as a group. We need humanness in our AI usage because the decisions we make as individuals have an impact on others.
If you want to use AI with your humanness engaged, here are three principles to help on this journey.
Define the functionality
For what ends are you using AI?
Most people focus on this benefit: convenience. This reason creates a blanket statement to always use AI, for who doesn't like convenience? So let's take another approach and work backwards: What is the outcome you want from using AI?
AI usage tends to fall into these non-mutually exclusive categories:
Organize complex ideas or processes in a usable and user-friendly way. Examples include creating a process for personalized healthy eating habits or summarizing research on the history and usage of AI in brand marketing.
Create new content or an image based on something that already exists. Maybe it's creating a picture of a cat surfing a rainbow cloud or writing the story of Cinderella in the voice of Homer Simpson. It's about taking a reference point and shifting the perspective or tone on it.
Edit something that was previously written or created to make sure it flows for grammar, punctuation, content and similar standards. Examples would be asking a program to proofread or rewrite the article you wrote for a school project.
Get really clear on what you can trust AI to do. Currently, the AI hallucination rate, or the frequency with which it generates false information, can be as high as 40%. You may not want to rely on AI only to organize something that is highly technical or trust it to create your schedule for next week.
Know exactly what you are saying yes to when you use AI.
Establish boundaries
Decide under what circumstances you will not use AI.
As humans, we all have people, ideas and things we value. This informs what we are willing or not willing to do, which creates boundaries. Humans can also have boundaries with AI.
For example, I've been a childhood fan of Hayao Miyazaki, the creator of beloved Japanese animated films such as Spirited Away. Knowing his perspectives on AI, I would never input his work into an AI platform because I respect his work deeply.
Another person I know is a writer who wants to honor the time and care it took to develop their creative work. Privacy, in terms of attribution back to the original writer, is important to them. So they decide to prioritize and even pay for (if needed) services that will not store their work and give it to other users without their knowledge.
Knowing what you highly value and are willing to hold onto is part of your integrity and empathy as a human. These qualities create boundaries, which then determine what you say no to.
Ask better questions and make better requests
After you have your personal values for AI usage based on the first two principles, let's get tactical. In order to have useful and doable AI outputs, you need to have relevant and specific inputs. Here is a framework to help you assess your inputs:
Be specific about your situation. Put on your journalist hat and provide the Five Ws: who, what, when, where and why of the circumstance. This provides enough context for AI to return outputs that are specific to you instead of just anyone else.
Name the output you want. Specify if you want high-level strategies, detailed tactics, brainstorming, summary or anything in between. If you don't state what you want initially, then you will likely input 10 more prompts to get to where you want to go.
Honor your limitations. Specify what you do not want. It can be a process, types of input, time period or perspective.
Ask follow-up questions. If something seems confusing, unclear or undoable for you, then ask AI to clarify, define or break it down to smaller steps. Sometimes, certain words or ideas are used, but they may or may not be used in the same way you are using them. Double-check to make sure you are on the same page.
When we choose to use a tool and it has an increasing impact on the world, then we need to get really clear on when and how we use it.
With these 3 principles, you get to decide why you want to use AI, under what circumstances you will not use AI and how to get AI outputs that are specific and relevant to your life.
AI is a tool. We get to bring our humanness to any tool by determining our relationship with the usage and the impact it has on the world and other people.

GEC 2025: What the Global Entrepreneurship Congress says about American entrepreneurial leadership

Among the greatest of American exports, hip-hop and basketball have gone entirely global. Entrepreneurship too. Back to antiquity, the first businesses were in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The modern corporation is a European invention, and the longest running company is Japanese. But the Americans made it cool. From the 1980s-era 'greed is good' to post-Great Recession social entrepreneurship, the United States put get-rich businesses on magazine covers and humble small business owners on primetime reality TV. Fitting, then, that the Global Entrepreneurship Congress is an American product that has been mostly held abroad. With origins in the early 2000s, this first-of-its-kind globally-minded pro-startup conference was held in 2009 for 200 attendees in Kansas City, with funding from the entrepreneurship-obsessed Kauffman Foundation. Founded by trained economist and policy wonk Jonathan Ortmans, the conference is organized by what is now called the Global Entrepreneurship Network (or GEN, pronounced like the name Jen), which Ortmans leads. This year boasted more than 3,000 attendees. 'Entrepreneurs are the new diplomats of the world.' Jonathan Ortmans, Global Entrepreneurship Network Over the following 15 years, the Congress was held the world over, including Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Last week, GEC was held in the United States for the first time since its start — in Indianapolis, a growing city in a Midwestern state with bipartisan support for business growth and a hook into federal research dollars. 'Entrepreneurs are the new diplomats of the world,' Ortmans said on stage. His opening remarks lamented fading enthusiasm for an interconnected global economy. Elsewhere, he spoke optimistically of what remains bipartisan support for business creation. In the conference's keynote conversation with entrepreneur-turned-celebrity investor Mark Cuban, Ortmans boasted that GEC was held in Moscow in the weeks that followed the Russian invasion of Crimea. Back in March 2014, for the conference-attending entrepreneurs and their supporters from around the world, 'nothing was different.' Whether that sounds like a hardworking ethic or aloof indifference, Ortmans argues entrepreneurs crave stability, clarity and transparency, which benefits everyone else. Alongside Ortmans, Cuban presented as even more optimistic, and idealistic, for Entrepreneur The Diplomat. Cuban gushed about the promise of artificial intelligence to unlock the entrepreneurial spirit around the world, leveling the playing field with just an internet connection. Famously, Silicon Valley notables broke toward supporting Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, but Cuban was a prominent outlier and frequent MAGA critic. He was less directly critical at nonpolitical-striving GEC, and Ortmans encouraged him to widen his lens to consider a global audience in the convention hall that came from at least 130 countries. Tellingly, there was no formal delegation from the American federal government, nor its DOGE-cost-cutting Small Business Administration. (One member of a GEC advisory group politely declined to comment and sensibly encouraged this reporter to focus on the international presence and bipartisan support among state and local American officials.) 'There are plenty of places to talk about politics. If you're an entrepreneur, be an entrepreneur. If your business succeeds, the politicians will come to you,' Cuban advised. 'You want your business to outlast any one politician.' In some sense, it's a hopeful throwback to a more innocent time when a jet-setting elite believed commerce would lead to peace and prosperity. That's the optimistic worldview that led the American government to welcome the Chinese Community Party into the World Trade Organization, and the same that encouraged the German government to rely on the Russian state for its energy security. In recent years, there's been a reversal: Global citizens of international capitals have been humbled into a choice, say more, or say less. During the pandemic, social justice protests demanded that entrepreneurs speak out on a growing list of political issues. Ortmans, Cuban and the spirit of GEN's GEC seem to say something different. As one GEC collaborator has told me: 'Entrepreneurship is my politics.' Informed by the modest, Midwestern style of the Kauffman Foundation, the conference was filled with practical advice for entrepreneurs and local economic development leaders. Common-sense policy discussions happened alongside meet-and-greets between commerce ministers from dozens of countries. Each GEC features a dedicated 'compass room' with a UN-style circular white table with microphones. Its orientation stands in contrast to the Silicon Valley investor-catwalk startup conferences, Austin's hipper-than-thou SXSW and and the sprawling and showy Las Vegas consumer technology shows. Ortmans hopped between sessions and off-site events. He addressed both the launch of a national campaign to center entrepreneurs in next year's anniversary of the American Revolution and at a working session of 'national ecosystem resource providers' — of which Technically is one. 'This is one way back,' Ortmans said of a more pro-growth time. 'Customers matter. Failure doesn't.' Mark Cuban Cuban, who knows something about hip hop and basketball, embodies a brighter optimism than most American elites of late. A thousand of us overflowed conference chairs, and clapped and chuckled at his folksy charm, embodied by the carefully chosen polo-shirt he wore from his Indiana University alma mater,. As ready-for-TV as Cuban is, he still offers practical advice for founders: 'Raising money isn't an accomplishment. It's an obligation.' And in practiced, self-effacement: 'Customers matter. Failure doesn't.' (In contrast, another main-stage panel of Colorado-bred tech startup notables was a snoozefest of self-congratulation from a bygone era.) Cuban advised policymakers and economic development leaders to invest in community, rule of law and lifestyle to attract and retain entrepreneurs: When he chose where to start his businesses, first Indiana and later Texas, 'not one single time did I look at the tax rate first.' Speaking to a crowd with attendees from countries including Iraq, Nigeria and France, he personified his role as the commonsense sage of American-style center-left techno-optimism. Said Cuban: 'An entrepreneur is always an entrepreneur first.'

Trump says US Steel will stay in Pittsburgh and enter a ‘planned partnership' with Nippon

After more than a year of back-and-forth and political ping pong over the deal, US Steel and Nippon will enter a 'planned partnership,' according to a social post by President Donald Trump. Trump today said he approved the $14.9 billion merger of Japanese-owned Nippon Steel Corporation and United States Steel Corporation. He asserted in a post on Truth Social that the deal would create 70,000 jobs (US Steel currently employs around 22,000 people, down from a two-decade peak near 50,000). He also claimed it would add $14 billion to the US economy. Pennsylvania's junior senator, Dave McCormick, repeated the monetary amount while describing a different number of jobs. 'This $14 billion investment by Nippon Steel ensures this storied American company remains under US leadership, dramatically enhances US domestic steel production capacity, protects more than 11,000 Pennsylvania jobs, and supports the creation of at least 14,000 more,' Sen. McCormick posted on X. Per the president, US Steel will keep its headquarters in Pittsburgh, where it's been located for more than a century, and Trump said he will visit the city for a 'big rally' next Friday, May 30. The company on Friday afternoon issued a statement praising the president for the decision. 'US Steel will remain American, and we will grow bigger and stronger through a partnership with Nippon Steel that brings massive investment, new technologies and thousands of jobs over the next four years,' the company said, in part. At the time of publication, the administration did not provide more specifics on the agreement or economic impacts. Nippon's purchase, however, comes at a time of dwindling steel jobs over the past half-century, as federal investments like the New Economy Collaborative look for ways to build opportunities in robotics and automation in the region. 'Our energy assets, skilled workforce, higher education and strategic location to markets,' Allegheny Conference CEO Stefani Pashman said, 'are a tremendous value proposition for investment from companies like Nippon.' The decision to move forward with the deal reverses former President Joe Biden's move to block the merger in January, a few weeks before his term ended. It also marks a shift away from Trump's campaign trail stance against the Nippon-US Steel purchase. Previously, US Steel threatened to leave Pittsburgh, or at least downsize its presence, if the deal failed. Plus, United Steelworkers, the trade union representing some workers at US Steel, continuously came out against the proposal. For Pittsburgh, the legacy of steel looms large. US Steel, once the largest domestic company and a hallmark of American industrial might, is now worth roughly $11.75 billion of a stock surge post-announcement. In contrast, Nippon Steel is valued at over $21.66 billion and ranks as the world's fourth-largest steelmaker. The decline of US Steel mirrors a larger story of economic transformation. Once a cornerstone of industrial America, the company now symbolizes how automation and globalization reshaped Pittsburgh and similar cities. Still, elected officials, as both pro- and anti-deal legislators have previously said, are hoping for a path forward that continues to build up the region for the so-called new economy. Several Pennsylvania politicians issued statements on Friday afternoon. 'We have the opportunity to deliver historic investments,' Gov. Josh Shapiro said, 'ensure the future of American steelmaking continues to run through the Mon Valley while the headquarters of US Steel remains in Pittsburgh and have our workers, right here in Pennsylvania, continue leading the world with their skill and innovation.' 'Vowed to jam that up almost a year and a half ago and we did,' posted Sen. John Fetterman. 'The original deal was a death sentence for Mon Valley steel. Nippon coughed up an extra $14B. This is why we fight for the union way of life.'
