Who will win the Auburn Regional? D1Baseball weighs in

USA Today30-05-2025
Who will win the Auburn Regional? D1Baseball weighs in Auburn has the tools to emerge victorious in this weekend's regional. Will they get it done?
Auburn baseball's postseason journey gets underway on Friday evening when it faces Central Connecticut at 6 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park in Auburn. The Tigers are gearing up to host its third regional in four years, and will look to advance to the Super Regionals for the fourth time since 2018.
Will they get the job done? D1Baseball dropped its predictions for each regional on Friday, including their picks for the Auburn Regional. According to D1Baseball's picks, Auburn has an 81% chance to emerge victorious in its regional this weekend. Nine members of D1Baseball's staff including Kendall Rogers and Mark Etheridge forecasted Auburn to win, with two members, Aaron Fitt and Bradley Smart, picking NC State.
Central Connecticut, Stetson, and NC State will each provide its own set of challenges for Auburn this weekend, but NC State's greatest quality will be its pitching. In its preview of the Auburn Regional, D1Baseball named NC State's starting rotation the best in the regional, with Dom Fritton being the most dominant pitcher in the staff with 102 strikeouts through 83 1/3 innings. The Tigers would miss Fritton should Auburn and NC State win its Friday games, as he is scheduled to pitch against Stetson in game one on Friday. Auburn would most likely face Ryan Marohn on Saturday, who boasts a team-low 3.72 ERA with 81 punchouts.
How will Auburn combat the Wolfpack's elite pitching staff? In terms of offense and defense, the Tigers have the edge. D1Baseball gave Auburn the title of best offensive and defensive team in the regional. Offensively, five players are hitting above .300, three players have double-digit home run totals, and eight players have 30-or-more RBI. Defensively, D1Baseball highlights the sneaky good team Auburn has in the field.
Though it's not necessarily a team you think of when you think about electric defensive players, Auburn is the best defensive team in this regional, as it has a .982 fielding percentage and no player on the roster with more than eight errors on the season. They might not be the team that turns in the most acrobatic play during the weekend, but they're the team most likely to make every single routine play.

5-star 2026 Ohio State running back target Savion Hiter announces commitment date

As it stands right now, the Ohio State football team has put together a very good recruiting class for the 2026 cycle, but if we're being honest, it's a little behind where we've seen in past years, especially considering the Buckeyes are coming off a College Football Playoff national championship. And while many programs would love to have the class Ohio State has, there have been some pretty big misses as the program tries to figure out how name, image and likeness, and the House Settlement leading to direct revenue payments will work. The perception is that the Buckeyes have been conservative compared to other teams, and that has seemingly led to some misses on the high-priority targets. But there's another big one in play coming up with five-star running back Savion Hiter, who just announced his commitment date. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Hiter is ranked as the No. 1 running back and ninth overall prospect in the class. He will be making his college choice on August 19, according to an announcement on "X," and he'll be choosing among a final four of Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, and Tennessee. To be fair, OSU doesn't seem to have the momentum in this race -- though that hasn't seemed to matter this year. Despite being on campus multiple times, the buzz is that it'll come down to Michigan and Tennessee, both of whom have been much more aggressive with NIL money than Ohio State has been. To date, the Buckeyes have just one running back commitment in the class of 2026, three-star Ohio product Favour Akih. It's beginning to look like he'll be the lone back in this class unless there's a surprise with Hiter, or OSU pivots and tries to find a diamond in the rough to round out the class. Texas A&M is reportedly trailing one team in pursuit of 2026 4-star WR

Texas A&M's 2026 recruiting class features three of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2026 cycle, as four-star Aaron Gregory, Madden Williams, and Mike Brown have all shut down their recruitment and are expected to seal the deal with the program during Early Signing Day on December 4. However, head coach Mike Elko, OC Collin Klein, and WR coach Holmon Wiggins are looking to land one more elite pass catcher next month. After missing out on four-star wide receiver Ethan "Boobie" Feaster, who committed to USC earlier this month, Elko and his staff are eyeing the top route runner in the class, as four-star Mississippi native Jace Mathews will anounce his commitment on August 8, and has narrowed his list to Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. Mathews has taken official visits to all four finalists, but it's been unclear who is truly leading heading into next month. On Friday, 247Sports recruiting insider Tom Loy (Subscription Required) provided more clarity, stating that Auburn, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and LSU, in that order, are where things stand from an "optimism" standpoint. "After that, Texas A&M seems to have some optimism as well. Not nearly to the level of Auburn, but they are up there. They have done a great job of showing him what a future looks like in College Station, and that has resonated well with him and his family. Coach Wiggins does a tremendous job recruiting the receiver position, and he is very difficult to beat." While Texas A&M is reportedly 1B to Auburn's 1A, 2026 5-star WR Tristen Keys, who is currently committed to LSU, is a candidate to flip to either A&M or Tennessee, which could shake up Mathew's final decision, and if Mathews commits to Auburn, I'd expect Elko and Wiggins to go hard after Keys this fall, especially if Mathews shuts down his recruitment. Still, the Aggies are in a good spot heading into his commitment, and still have a solid chance at pulling off another surprise commitment and solidifying the program's future wide receiver rotation that already looks borderline elite on paper. During his 2024 junior season, Mathews reeled in 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns, and will more than likely play in the slot at the next level. According to 247Sports, Mathews is currently positioned as the 191st-ranked prospect in the 2026 cycle, the 27th-ranked wide receiver, and the 9th-ranked prospect in Mississippi.
