Put some colour in your cheeks: why blusher is all you need right now
Sometimes blusher gets sidelined by beauty consumers: After all, a scarlet lipstick makes a louder, smarter, sharper make-up statement. A glistening eyeshadow gives a more glamorous, glossy look. But I think we've got this wrong. My desert island beauty product would be blusher. And I think yours should be, too. Because if our eyes are the windows to our soul, it is our cheeks that reveal the truth in our heart. Flushed with love? Desire? Delight? Exuberant? Exhilarated? Afraid? No other body part so openly discloses our feelings. Flushed cheeks are — to me — vitality, life force and beauty defined. And I'm not alone. Over the decade that I covered fashion week shows — hundreds of them, from London to Paris, New York to Milan — I heard designers in the tiny backstage beauty areas praise the 'perfect flush' time and time again. They enlisted the world's finest make-up artists to recreate perfect iterations on their models, from the radiant blush of first love, to cheeks freckled and ruddy from the sun, or that pinched prettiness that comes with a frosty winter walk. Blush has been a make-up mainstay for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt ochre was rubbed onto the cheeks, while the early Greeks used crushed mulberries and aristocratic Romans turned to red vermilion. By the start of the 20th century French companies, such as Bourjois and Guerlain, began to produce the stuff at scale — and demand hasn't stopped since. 'Across cultures and centuries, a hint of colour on the cheeks has always been associated with youth, vitality, emotion and beauty,' says make-up artist Ninni Nummela. 'It mimics health and radiance. Whether softly blended or boldly sculpted, it adds depth and dimension, delivering an instant lift.' Fellow face painter Celia Burton agrees. 'Blush brings a face to life,' she says. 'At its core, it's linked to youth: colour in the cheeks signals vitality. But beyond that, it adds charm and joy. We're currently returning to a more honest approach to make-up, where we enhance what's already there, celebrating the natural tones that show up in the face. You can't do that authentically without blush.' Our current fascination with real skin, plus more minimal beauty approaches such as the clean girl aesthetic, have sparked a blusher renaissance that feels less like a trend and more like a homecoming. Social media platforms and real faces have begun to reclaim blush as not just a finishing touch but as a focal point. Importantly, too, this is the kind of magic that suits us all. There's a thrilling universality to blush that few other beauty products can claim. It transcends age, gender and skin tone. The shift is also powered by innovation: today's formulas go far beyond the chalky, sparkly iterations of yore. Creams, balms, gels and tints that range from sheer to satin and matte to dewy allow for a seamless spectrum of finishes that work with your skin and better mimic a natural finish. Victoria Beckham's new Colour Wash Blush Water Tints are a case in point. Sitting somewhere between a stain and a gel, they are infused with activated sea water and come in three shades: coral (my fave), flushed (VB's go-to) and vintage rose, delivering a modern, painterly finish that looks like it's your own and feels — even in a busy blusher market — rather unique. 'It's the flush you get after a fantastic laugh, a day in the sun … or any other invigorating reason cheeks might show a little colour. I can think of a few,' says Beckham. 'I always draw a bit across my nose and the top part of my cheeks, where the sun would naturally kiss you.' Talking of application ... 'We've been applying it high on the cheekbones for years,' says Burton. 'Almost as an extension of contouring, but real blush doesn't show up there naturally. Think instead about how your face looks after exercise — the colour sits quite centrally on the apples of the cheeks, directly under the eyes and sometimes sweeps across the nose or hugs low along the jaw. Blush is about bringing a believable warmth to the face.' Nummela's top tip is about keeping it real too. 'Lightly pinch your cheeks to reveal the colour your skin turns, then choose a blush that closely matches that shade.' Convinced? I do hope so.

Viral Carrot Salad (TikTok) — Review & Recipe
Every week, without fail, I buy a five-pound bag of organic carrots. Even if we have barely made a dent in the previous week's carrots, I click 'add to cart' like it's my job. Ok, maybe it is kind of my job as a dietitian and a recipe developer, but you get it! While I serve salads every night with dinner, I often look for lettuce-free salads that don't wilt, are even better the next day (because no one wants limp lettuce for leftovers!), and use up what I have in the fridge. That's why I was so excited to stumble across Cassie Yeung's viral carrot salad on TikTok. With over 19.9 million views, I knew I had to try it. This salad is similar to Korean Carrot Salad, or Morkovcha, thought to have come about when Koreans in the Soviet Union couldn't find ingredients to make their traditional dishes, like kimchi. Instead, they used what they could find to make a carrot salad that was vinegary, based on Korean banchan — small dishes typically served with rice. Since Cassie's video first went viral earlier this year, many have made their own versions of this dish: some using maple syrup and fish sauce, others with added honey and lime. Even Cassie made a different version using raw red onions, dill, garlic, red wine vinegar, olive oil, lemon, and Calabrian chili. It reminds me of a carrot salad I often make with grated carrots, Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, honey, parsley, and sunflower seeds. Many other influencers have tried their hand, from Basic with Bails, and Baked by Melissa, Kale Junkie, and publishers from Eating Well and Real Simple; each adding their own spin to the dish — and they all love it. Hey, you! Wanna cook thousands of easy recipes on your phone in step-by-step mode — with helpful video tutorials? Download the free Tasty app right now. For the purposes of this post, I followed Cassie's original recipe. She starts by using a vegetable peeler to thinly shave the carrots into ribbons. While she doesn't give exact measurements, I spied around eight or nine carrots, so I tried to do the same. Spoiler, I had only seven carrots left. While using the peeler is easy, I always find a way to cut myself when using it in a hurry, so I took my time with these carrots. I cut vegetables all day long, but I always manage to hurt myself using a peeler, go figure! I ended up with these funky-shaped carrots. Not sure how to add them, I snacked on a couple, and threw the rest into the freezer to make into vegetable stock later. And then my dog begged for one, proceeded to take it onto the couch, and stain the couch. A problem for another day! I added a couple of roughly chopped green onions along with sesame seeds. I only have black sesame seeds, so feeling fancy, I threw a tablespoon of those in as well. Finally, I grated a clove of garlic (I spy my favorite kitchen tool, the zester/microplane!). Let this be your sign to a) buy a zester, and b) stop using jarred minced garlic. If I had fresh ginger, that would be a delicious addition as well. Cassie's dressing is simple, albeit measured with her heart. It's simply sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and chili crisp, which you gently massage into the carrot ribbons. She was smart to use a glove, because my hands might smell like sesame oil for the next week. I added a healthy amount of chili crisp on top. I've recently lost my ability to eat spicy food, so I went for a mild chili crisp for a little added flavor and crunch. At this point, it kind of looks like my 'carrot lox' I make. In Cassie's video, she claims that she's eating her skincare, as carrots are good for hormonal health. Judging by her beautiful, dewy glow, I'd buy just about any skin care she was selling. Carrots are indeed good for overall health, including skin health. They are full of nutrients like beta-carotene (which converts to Vitamin A). Beta-carotene can help the skin prevent damage from UV radiation and free radicals. They are also a good source of vitamins C and E. While any vegetables are going to be beneficial to your health, I'd still lather up with your favorite sunscreen — don't just rely on those carrots! She eats hers right out of the bowl with chopsticks, and never wanting to add a dirty dish to the pile, I did the same. This was a part of my lunch, so I also added some baked tofu on top for added protein. Cassie's friends apparently laugh at her for craving vegetables, but if all carrots tasted like this… I would, too! This might be my new favorite way to use up those leftover carrots. I might add cucumber ribbons to my salad next time, along with some mint or cilantro and a sliced avocado to make it more filling. All in all, this is going to be on my vegetable rotation! A Step-By-Step Guide To Natural Goddess Glam
My favorite beauty look of summer is natural goddess glam. Think perfectly imperfect waves, sun-kissed skin, and a glow that radiates from within. Wondering how to get the natural goddess glam look for yourself? Here's my step-by-step guide! 1) Start your glam early. Skinfix Foaming Oil Cleanser ($30), Exo + Ectoin Intensive Repair Baume ($69), and Triple ... More Lipid-Peptide Cream ($85) It's (kind of) an industry secret that true glam starts the night (or week!) before the hair and makeup sesh. Start your glam the night before by creating a hydrated base for your makeup with a skincare routine that's safe for sensitive skin. Skinfix is all about protecting your skin barrier, and their Foaming Oil Cleanser removes all makeup without stripping your skin. Follow this up with the new Exo + Ectoin Intensive Repair Balm, which is a retinol-free treatment that acts like a retinol to smooth out the skin. Allow that step to sink in before adding your moisturizer on top. My favorite is of course, the Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream, and I also use this to prime my skin before I do my makeup. 2) Use filtered water for better hair and skin. Canopy Handheld Filtered Showerhead Duo | $275 Canopy makes adding a filtered showerhead to your routine so easy, it's basically a necessity. It's been so important for my skin and hair personally to add this step. I've seen such a difference in my hair fullness and skin texture from using a filtered showerhead. I love Canopy showerheads, but especially this one because I can use the scalp massaging setting for that spa experience at home! 3) Create sleek volume for styling your hair. Dyson Supersonic r™ Hair Dryer | $570 My hairstylist was using this hair dryer before its release, so I was thrilled to finally get my hands on it. This is my absolute must-have hair tool for goddess hair. Dyson's new hair dryer is their best one yet, with powerful air and no heat damage; my hair has never been healthier. I love using the included diffuser for more naturally defined curls, or the powerful air attachment for ultra shine. It's so convenient that it remembers the settings when you switch attachments! I finish the look with their Chitosan™ Post-Style Serum, which leaves my hair shiny and full. 4) Add gorgeous waves to your look. ghd Chronos Curve Conical Wand | $259 A natural goddess needs hair that makes waves. For this look, I add some curls to my now sleek hair with the ghd Chronos Curve Conical Wand. It's important to use a conical wand for this look to create smooth and defined beachy waves that cascade over my shoulders. This wand is my pick because it holds my wavy style for days. 5) Prep your skin with an eye lift to look more awake. Clarins Total Eye Lift Eye Cream | $95 After my skincare, I love to add in this at-home eye lift to make my eyes look more awake for the rest of the day and into the night. A product like this does wonders for your glam and will replace the typical under-eye patches that aren't always effective. This smooths the area and lifts, so my eye area is ready for makeup! 5) Create a natural face base that will prep your skin well. Typology Tinted Care Trio for Complexion and Lips | $123 Typology's line of tinted skincare is my choice for a more natural-looking glam. Summer heat can make heavier foundations look wonky, so I always reach for my Typology products. A good concealer is the best way to start your face base, and their Tinted Concealer is perfect for this. It has a thicker texture with great coverage. I follow that up with the Tinted Serum, which is an amazing product for a makeup base as it looks even better the longer you wear it. It adapts to your skin to even out your complexion. Then I hydrate my lips with their Replenishing Balm as a base to prep my lips. 6) Blur and bronze the skin to make it glow. Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Pressed Powder ($54) and Ambient™ Lighting Bronzer ($58) For glam that lasts, Hourglass Cosmetics makes some truly stellar powder products. I use the Vanish Airbrush Pressed Powder to set the under-eye area after applying concealer and create a blurred look. This is a fine, talc-free powder that doesn't make my skin look cakey, so I also apply it to my t-zone to diminish shine in the right places. A goddess glam wouldn't be complete without bronzer, too! I prefer a powder bronzer over creams, which don't last as well on my skin. The Ambient™ Lighting Bronzer is one of the best bronzers I've used, so it's the perfect way to glow up the skin for a lit-from-within bronzed finish. 7) Add bold colors in a subtle way. AORA Mírame Eyeshadow Palette | $65 AORA's eyeshadows are out-of-this-world good. This palette is inspired by Mexico's opulence, and every artist should be adding this to their kit. I've never seen a silver eyeshadow like the one in this palette; it's stunning and lasts all day. Then add your favorite eyeliner and mascara. I love using the rich pink from the palette as my summer blush, and it's great for deeper skin tones. Plus, the brand is 100% plastic-free! 8) Add definition for a long-lasting lip with a natural shine. DIBS Lip Service Set | $48 For the perfect lip to match your summer tan, DIBS is a wonderful option. The No Pressure Lip Liner lasts for hours on me, while the Jam Jam Lip plumps my lips so they look fuller longer. I love the versatile color options; it makes it so easy to choose a color no matter the skin tone. 9) Highlight your body to give it a healthy, hydrated look. Josie Maran Pink Algae Pro-Retinol Body Butter | $42 I love using Josie Maran products for hydrating my skin, but the Pink Algae Pro-Retinol Body Butter has a consistency that makes my skin glow. The texture is thick but absorbs well, and the finish looks like you put on a high-end balm. Use this to add a shine to the skin that makes you look like an ethereal goddess. 10) Add a shimmer oil to bring out your skin's natural undertones. +Lux Unfiltered N°30 High Gloss SPF 30 Oil | $44 For a shimmer that lasts from day to night, the Lux Unfiltered Oil Sunscreen is your girl. This is such a fun product to apply, as it's basically a shimmer oil with SPF 30. The flecks of shimmer and subtle bronze tint will emphasize any summer tan that you're already rocking. 11) Don't forget to show some love to your hands, too! Lights Lacquer Pistachio Cuticle Oil Bundle | $25 You can have the prettiest nail polish in the world, but if you aren't hydrating your cuticles, it can fall flat. Lights Lacquer's cuticle oils smell amazing, and the formula is the most nourishing one I've tried. It's thick but absorbs in a way that isn't messy. Their cuticle oil pens are perfect to keep in your purse, wherever your glam may take you.
