Rangers newbie Thelo Aasgard opens up on Liverpool education, playing with Haaland & why he ALWAYS liked Russell Martin
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THELO AASGARD came through the ranks at Anfield, weathered the storm in English football's third tier and scored on his international debut - alongside Erling Haaland. Now he wants to take his career to the next level at Rangers, and admits new head coach Russell Martin was a huge pull for him to come to Scottish football. 3 Thelo Aasgard has given his first interview since arriving in Scotland 3 He joins Rangers on a four-year contract The 23-year-old signed for Gers on a four-year deal from Luton Town for a fee in the region of £3.5million. He became Martin's fifth signing of the summer and perhaps the most exciting yet. The Norwegian international promises to bring flair and attacking intent to Ibrox, and in his first interview since arriving in Glasgow he spoke about how as soon as he knew the Light Blues were interested, his mind was made up. Speaking to Rangers TV, Aasgard said: "I'm delighted to be here. It's been quite a few days waiting for it but I'm really happy to get it over the line. "When I heard (about Rangers' interest) I was over the moon. I've played against the manager a few times and I've always seen myself in his team. "It was quite an easy decision to be fair. I love the amount of games here, the stature of the club and that itself is enough. "I think just having the trust from the manager is really important and just being here one day, I can already see he wants me to express myself in his system and I'm really looking forward to play a part. "I remember when we played his Swansea teams, we never really touched the ball! "I always thought it'd be fun to play in that sort of team." Aasgard qualifies for Norway due to the fact his father is from there but he himself was born in Liverpool, and that's also where his pro football journey started. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview He was in the Anfield youth system for five years before leaving to join Wigan Athletic in order to play first team football. It was a decision that worked out as Aasgard racked up over 150 appearances for the Latics, building a reputation for himself as a goalscoring midfielder in League One. He said: "I played for Liverpool for five years. "I was a young kid, 14, moved to Wigan, and kind of developed through the academy there and made my debut when I was 18. "It was four or five years of progression, really. It kind of started off quite raw, playing a lot of games, but just finding my feet. "And then coming into the age of 19, 20, I really started to impose myself on our team. We won the league and won it well and got promoted, and it was a chance to show myself in the championship. "I think I did quite well, although we got relegated. But last season and the season before was really where I started to step into my own body and really become the player I am. "I grew a lot of confidence and scored some goals." Aasgard signed for Luton in the January transfer window last season as the Hatters looked to desperately cling on to their Championship status. While they ultimately couldn't fend off the threat of relegation, Aasgard left a mark on Kenilworth Road with fans and boss Matt Bloomfield sad to see him leave. Aasgard said: "I went there to try and help them, and unfortunately, it didn't go as we planned. "But, you know, I'd like to think I gave my all, and I loved my time there. Loved every minute." Whilst at Luton, Aasgard made his debut for Norway in a World Cup qualifier against Moldova. As first caps go it was a dream, as he scored the third goal in a 5-0 win. Also on the scoresheet that night? A certain Erling Haaland. Martin Odegaard captained the side that evening too, playing in midfield alongside Aasgard. "They really took me in well," said Aasgard. "To be fair, I feel really part of the group. We've got a top, top group. We've had a strong start to the World Cup qualifiers. "So, yeah, to play in the World Cup next year is a big goal for me. "Hopefully I can show the manager that I'm ready with some performances here." Not only does he want to show the national team manager what he's capable of right away, but Aasgard is keen for the Rangers fans to see what he's all about. He said: "I feel at home already. The facilities are fantastic. It's a really good change in me. I can't wait. "It just feels like the right thing in my career. To be playing in front of some amazing fans at an amazing stadium, it's what I've been dreaming of. "I'd say I have a bit of flair, I'm full of confidence and not afraid to shoot from distance. "I like to link up with my teammates and form connections at the top of the pitch. "I like to be part of the build-up phase as well as getting in the box and getting my goals." 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

As he challenged for a ball at the byline, Musiala was shielded away from it by Willian Pacho and at the same time, Donnarumma dived to jump on the ball. However, as Musiala was caught in the middle of the pair, his left leg got caught under the body of the Italian goalkeeper. Donnarumma was also visibly upset by the accident and had to be consoled by the team benches as he held his gloves over his face. The Italian was shown on camera in tears having sunk down to one knee before the half-time whistle was blown. Musiala was stretchered off the field of play before being taken to hospital. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens spotted with Chelsea squad after Club World Cup win over Palmeiras... despite not signing yet According to Sky Sports in Germany, it is suspected he has suffered a fibula fracture. Following the game, Donnarumma shared a picture of himself in tears walking off at half-time to Instagram. He paid tribute to Musiala in the caption, saying: "All my prayers and well wishes are with you @jamalmusiala10," Despite the horror collision, Donnarumma was in fine form for his club as he helped them win the match 2-0 despite going down to NINE men. PSG fielded the same starting 11 that had won the Champions League seven weeks earlier in Bayern's stadium, with the exception of Bradley Barcola replacing Dembele in the front three. In the final 12 minutes of normal time and 11 minutes added on, PSG scored twice, had two men sent off and then saw a penalty awarded against them at the death overturned on review by English referee Anthony Taylor. Pacho was sent off for a lunge of Leon Goretzka, and PSG substitute Lucas Hernandez soon followed him for a mindless elbow on Raphael Guerrero. But the European champions held on, and Ousmane Dembele sealed victory deep into stoppage time to put them a step closer to being crowned kings of the world as well. It felt harsh all round on Bayern, who were the better team for much of the match and lost Musiala to a sickening ankle injury just before half time. That moment took the shine off what was one of the best games of the tournament. Luis Enrique's side will face one of Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final. The other clash in the last four sees Fluminense take on Chelsea.
