Top diplomat slams EU for inaction against 'US mercenaries' killing starving Palestinians
In a statement on X on Thursday, the Spanish minister slammed the EU for remaining 'unwilling to take any action against these crimes'.
In May, Borell, who served as the EU's foreign policy chief from 2019 to 2024, made headlines for stating that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, describing the Israeli government's actions as 'the largest ethnic-cleansing operation since the end of the Second World War'.
Borell's latest comments come amid growing international outrage over the controversial GHF aid distribution sites, which have been described as 'death traps' by officials from the UN and Save the Children, among others. Over 600 Palestinians have been killed while queuing at GHF sites as of May, according to UN data.
On Wednesday, AP revealed that American contractors used live ammunition on Palestinians at GHF sites. This followed reports in Israeli media of Israeli troops admitting to deliberately shooting and killing aid seekers.

Last week, 15 international human rights and legal organisations called for the suspension of GHF's operations due to possible complicity in war crimes.
On Thursday, the Gaza government media office released a statement from the interior ministry 'warning against dealing or cooperating" with the GHF.
Describing the distribution centres as 'mass death traps' and 'centers of humiliation', the ministry called on citizens to refrain from working with or cooperating with the foundation.

OPEC+ speeds up oil output hikes, adds 548,000 bpd in August
OPEC+ agreed on Saturday to raise production by 548,000 barrels per day in August, further accelerating output increases at its first meeting since oil prices jumped - and then retreated - following Israeli and US attacks on Iran. The group, which pumps about half of the world's oil, has been curtailing production since 2022 to support the market. But it has reversed course this year to regain market share and as US President Donald Trump demanded the group pump more to help keep gasoline prices lower. The production boost will come from eight members of the group - UAE, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Kazakhstan and Algeria. The eight started to unwind their most recent layer of cuts of 2.2 million bpd in April. The August increase represents a jump from monthly increases of 411,000 bpd OPEC+ had approved for May, June and July, and 138,000 bpd in April. OPEC+ cited a steady global economic outlook and healthy market fundamentals, including low oil inventories, as reasons for releasing more oil. The acceleration came after some OPEC+ members, such as Kazakhstan and Iraq, produced above their targets, angering other members that were sticking to cuts, sources have said. Kazakh output returned to growth last month and matched an all-time high. OPEC+, which groups the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies led by Russia, wants to expand market share amid growing supplies from rival producers like the United States, sources have said. With the August increase, OPEC+ will have released 1.918 million bpd since April, which leaves just 280,000 bpd to be released from the 2.2 million bpd cut. On top of that, OPEC+ allowed the UAE to increase output by 300,000 bpd. The group still has in place other layers of cuts amounting to 3.66 million bpd. The group of eight OPEC+ members will next meet on August 3.

Azerbaijan to invest $2 billion in economic sector of Pakistan
Pakistan and Azerbaijan on Friday signed a partnership agreement of US$2 billion investment in Pakistan, reflecting the continuing flow of investment in Pakistan, Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported. In the presence of Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov signed the agreement for investment of a total of US$2 billion by Azerbaijan in the economic sector of Pakistan. The agreement was signed between the two countries after a cordial meeting between the Prime Minister and the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Khankandi. The agreement has taken investment and trade relations between the two countries to a historic level, according to APP. The agreement will prove to be a milestone for further promotion of brotherly relations between the two countries and for strengthening of trade partnership. Israeli air strikes kill 10 near Rafah, including children
Nine people have been killed on Saturday in an Israeli attack near an aid centre north of Rafah, including three children, according to medical sources at Nasser Hospital. Another medical source at Ahli Hospital said another Palestinian was also killed and others injured in al-Zeitoun neighbourhood in Gaza City.
