Pioli returns to Fiorentina as head coach after just one season at Al-Nassr after shock Palladino resignation
The 59-year-old succeeds his compatriot Raffaele Palladino, who resigned to everyone's surprise in June, a few weeks after extending his contract until 2027.
'Fiorentina announces that its new coach for its first team is Stefano Pioli,' the club said in a statement.
'Pioli, who returns to Florence after wearing the purple jersey as a player between 1989 and 1995 and having coached the club from 2017 to 2019, has signed a contract binding him to Fiorentina until June 30, 2028.'
Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A last season which qualified them for the Conference League.
Pioli left Al-Nassr, where Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo plays, at the beginning of the week after just one season in charge, having guided the club to third place in the Saudi League.
His coaching career includes spells at Bologna, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and then five years at AC Milan with whom he won Serie A in 2021-22. — AFP

Last week, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner would head to the San Siro from Real Madrid after the Club World Cup. Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined Madrid from Tottenham in 2012 and had been linked with a move to Italy since early June, after announcing he would leave the Spanish giants at the end of his contract. He has made 597 appearances for the Spanish club, winning 28 trophies including four LaLiga and six Champions League titles. He played his last game for Real on Wednesday, coming on as a second-half substitute during a 4-0 loss to Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup semi-finals. (AFP pic) LONDON : Crystal Palace have been demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League by Uefa for a breach of multi-club ownership rules, European football's governing body confirmed on Friday. US businessman John Textor owns a stake in the Eagles and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Under Uefa multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season. Palace qualified for European competition for the first time by winning the FA Cup in May – the club's first ever major trophy. Textor has since agreed to sell his 43% stake in the London club to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. However, that deal is yet to be completed and was struck well after Uefa's deadline of March 1 for multi-club conflicts to be resolved. A decision on Palace's fate had been delayed by a separate case that initially saw Lyon relegated to the second tier of French football due to financial problems. The seven-time French champions won an appeal against that decision on Wednesday after Textor stood aside from the day-to-day running of the club. Palace are expected to appeal the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Parish told Sky Sports: 'We are obviously devastated, most importantly for the supporters.
