Immigration to investigate marriages of locals and foreigners with big age gaps

KOTA BARU: The Immigration Department will investigate all marriages between locals and foreigners, particularly those with significant age gaps.
This is to determine if there were ulterior motives behind the marriages and if they were orchestrated by syndicates.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said that there have been cases of Malaysian women aged 65 marrying foreign men in their 20s, raising suspicions.
"If they marry legally and follow proper laws and procedures, it's not an offence. But what we are concerned about is if the marriage is being used for other purposes, what we call a 'marriage of convenience'.
"When you have a 25-year-old foreign man marrying a 60- or 70-year-old woman, there's a significant age gap.
"We will conduct thorough investigations to verify whether the marriage is genuine or if it was done for specific benefits," he told reporters at the 2025 Immigration Director-General's Cup Shooting Championship at the Kelantan Shooting Association's range.
Zakaria said the department would not approve immigration facilities, such as a spouse visa for foreigners, if investigations revealed the marriage was not legitimate.
He added that such marriages were not a new issue but had long existed, and while not illegal if done properly, they posed a social problem.
"We need to raise public awareness. If you have elderly family members without anyone to care for them, pay attention so they don't fall victim to syndicates," he said.
Recently, the Immigration Department busted a syndicate believed to be offering immigration-related services, including applications under the "foreign spouse of Malaysian citizen" category and marriage registration services via the National Registration Department (NRD) for marriages between Malaysians and foreigners.
Zakaria had said the syndicate appeared to target elderly individuals who were often neglected or received no financial support from their families.
In most cases, he said, these senior citizens were not required to do anything except agree to the marriage.
"In return, they receive monthly allowances amounting to thousands of ringgit, as these foreigners are only interested in securing legal status," he said.

Prioritise youths' aspirations, Star and PBS told

Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 Text Size: Prem said the study also revealed that ideologies such as 'Sabah for Sabahans' and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) resonate strongly with this group. Kota Kinabalu: The leadership of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) should focus on youth-related issues in preparation for the 2025 state elections (PRN 2025), as recent statistics show that Malaysians aged 18-39 make up 50.47pc of the country's total electorate. Star Sabah Assistant Secretary-General, Prem Bechile Kitingan, said that this shift in voter demographics was highlighted in a study conducted by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), presented by Associate Professor Dr. Bonaventure Boniface at the PBS-Star Convention last Saturday. Advertisement 'Through the 2019 Constitutional Amendment, Malaysians aged 18 and above are automatically registered as voters, which also qualifies them to become election candidates,' said Prem, who is also the Director of the Sokid Villa Solidarity Research Centre. Prem added that in Sabah, this demographic tends to favour election candidates who understand youth sentiment, are free from corruption, uphold strong religious values, and possess credibility and integrity. The study, conducted by 10 UMS academics led by Associate Professor Dr Lai Yew Meng, was presented to the public for the first time. The research team included Dr. Budi Anto Mohd Tamring, Dr. Shaffarullah Abdul Rahman, Dr Amy Azuan Abdullah, and Dr Yusten Karulus, all of whom were also present at the convention. The number of young voters in Sabah in 2024 is 910,471 (53%), a 23pc increase from 485,939 in 2022. Prem said the study also revealed that ideologies such as 'Sabah for Sabahans' and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) resonate strongly with this group. They are drawn to capable and integrity-driven local leaders, prefer coalitions of local parties over solo local parties, and are not attracted to the 3R ideology (religion, race, and royalty). 'Young voters also support efforts to resolve issues related to dilapidated schools, having qualified teachers for subjects and infrastructure needs such as roads, water, electricity and rural internet access,' he said. Despite being active users of social media, this group still considers parental influence in shaping their political stance. However, they also have a strong sense of state identity, prioritising the candidate's ideology over party struggles. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Controversial US envoy pick faces united backlash

PETALING JAYA: More voices are urging the Malaysian government to reject the appointment of American conservative figure Nick Adams (pic) as the US Ambassador to Malaysia. PKR Youth International Relations Bureau's Arief Izuadin said Adams' appointment is viewed with deep concern as his background is closely associated with extremist ideologies and divisive rhetoric, which contrast starkly with the values upheld by Malaysia's government and people. 'Such a rejection should not be misconstrued as hostility but rather seen as a necessary measure to safeguard the integrity of bilateral relations and ensure that diplomatic envoys can contribute constructively, in a manner aligned with the shared aspirations of both nations,' he said in a statement yesterday. He added that PKR Youth intends to submit a formal memorandum of protest to the United States Embassy urging the appointment of a more moderate, respected and globally-minded individual, who will embody the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation that has long underpinned US-Malaysia relations. Similarly, Selangor PAS Youth Chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said in a separate statement that the government, through Wisma Putra, should take a firm and clear stance against Adams' appointment to protect the sensitivities of Malaysians. He added that the government should uphold the dignity of a nation that consistently advocates for humanitarian issues, especially regarding Palestine. 'Nick Adams is not just a controversial figure. He openly spreads hatred towards Islam and supports the Zionist colonial regime without consideration. 'He once pressured a restaurant in the United States to fire a waitress simply for wearing a 'Free Palestine' pin. This is an inhumane act that demonstrates extreme and hateful attitudes towards the oppressed Palestinian people's struggle,' he said in a statement yesterday. He emphasised that Malaysia does not need a diplomatic representative who brings extremist and pro-Zionist ideologies, as it is a majority-Muslim country that upholds the principles of justice and solidarity with oppressed people. 'This appointment is an insult to the sensitivities of Malaysians. If the government remains silent or accepts this appointment, it will be seen as betraying the people's firm stance in supporting the Palestinian cause,' he said. Mohamed Sukri said Malaysia has the absolute right under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to reject any ambassadorial candidate deemed unsuitable or harmful to domestic harmony. He added that firm action is needed to defend the nation's image and stance and to reject any efforts to spread extremist pro-Zionist ideologies in the country. On Sunday, Amanah Youth international bureau chairman Mus'ab Muzahar said Adams' appointment is an insult to the country's dignity and foreign policy. 'Nick Adams is not a diplomat or a statesman. He is merely a far-right propagandist, a staunch Trump supporter and a vocal supporter of the Zionist Israeli regime. 'His rhetoric on social media is full of hatred, racism and Islamophobic sentiments, clearly deviating from the spirit of mature bilateral relations,' he said in a Facebook post.
