Govt targeting Dalits, Kapus: alleges ex-MP
Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, Harsha Kumar condemned the state government's decision to reopen the Ratnachal Express train burning case, which was part of the Kapu reservation agitation in Tuni. He termed the move outrageous and politically motivated.
He further criticised the YSRCP government led by Jagan Mohan Reddy for cancelling 26 welfare schemes for Dalits and expressed disappointment that the current coalition government has not reinstated even one of those schemes in the past year. Harsha Kumar also accused the present government of failing to fulfil its promise of setting up a commission to investigate false cases filed against Dalits.
He questioned the rationale behind the government's persistence in pursuing cases that had already been dismissed by the judiciary, particularly the Tuni train incident. Alleging a political vendetta, Harsha Kumar demanded to know why there was such a determination to revive these cases.
He expressed confusion over the silence of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on the issue and questioned his stance on the cases filed against Kapus. Harsha Kumar stated that the entire Kapu community stood behind Pawan Kalyan, but criticised him for not delivering anything substantial for the community since assuming power. Harsha Kumar claimed that while real ganja smugglers are being let off the hook, common citizens and Dalits are being falsely implicated and subjected to injustice through fabricated cases.
He alleged that ganja is readily available in prisons across the state. He called for an urgent investigation into the matter.

Vijayawada: The high court on Tuesday dismissed the anticipatory bail petition filed by Rajampet YSRCP MP, P Midhun Reddy, in the alleged liquor scam case. The court observed that the investigating officer deserves a free hand to take the investigation to its logical conclusion in a case containing severe allegations, and the grant of anticipatory bail could hinder the ongoing investigation. The court also said that the power of granting anticipatory bail under section 438 of CrPC needs to be exercised sparingly in extraordinary circumstances. Considering the gravity of the offence, particularly taking note of the accusation that Rs 3,500 crore was said to be collected towards kickbacks for the liquor syndicate, no such extraordinary circumstances were seen in the present case for granting the relief of anticipatory bail, said the high court while dismissing the petition. Midhun Reddy, named A-4 in the alleged liquor scam, has been accused of conspiring to change the order placing system. The prosecution alleged that he influenced officials in bringing changes to the excise policy and was the mastermind behind placing orders to favoured companies. He is also accused of receiving kickbacks from the companies which were favoured by way of getting additional orders for liquor. The prosecution presented witness statements indicating the role of the MP and the money trail between some of the companies involved in the scam and the company owned by Midhun Reddy's family members. The MP said that he was implicated in the case because of political vendetta. He argued that he was not part of the state govt and had no role in policy decisions.

Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah Tuesday said Ahinda — a Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalits — must no longer be seen as a vote bank but as the "conscience of the nation," as he pitched the Karnataka model of empowerment for national adoption at the inaugural meeting of Congress' national OBC advisory council. "Let us remind the country that Ahinda is not a vote bank. It is the voice of India's conscience," Siddaramaiah said, addressing the gathering at KPCC headquarters. He said the model Karnataka had developed for social justice was rooted in fraternity and backed by data and scientific surveys. "We are here to reorient politics and reclaim our voice. India cannot progress without empowering backward classes, Dalits and minorities who have long been denied power, opportunity and dignity," he said. Former Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, who is part of the advisory council, voiced concerns about the BJP-led Centre's seriousness in conducting a caste census. Society must strengthen the voices led by Gandhi to ensure social justice and equity, he said, speaking at the AICC OBC Advisory Council meeting. 'Let us remind the country that Ahinda is not a vote bank. It is the voice of India's conscience,' he said, referring to the acronym that stands for minorities, OBCs and Dalits. Ahinda, he added, was an empowerment model which is not only relevant, but is also essential. 'India can never be a true democracy unless the majority who come from OBC, SC, ST and minority communities, that is the AHINDA communities, are not only counted, but also heard.' Karnataka model, Siddaramaiah said, was principled in its commitment to Social Justice and Equity. 'It is rooted in fraternity. It is based on data and scientific surveys. And it is now ready for a national-level adoption.' The CM said his government was committed to delivering justice after completion of the second socio, economic and educational survey that was underway.
