New Delhi: In a devastating road accident near Raipur, Chhattisgarh, 13 people, including women and children, lost their lives when their Swaraj Mazda vehicle collided with a trailer truck on the Raipur-Balodabazar highway.
The victims were returning from a family ceremony when the tragedy struck near the village of Bangoli, under the Kharora police station.
According to authorities, the accident occurred around 11:00–11:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Swaraj Mazda (registration number CG 04 MQ 1259) was carrying relatives of Puneet Sahu, residents of Chatod village. The group had travelled to Bano village in Kharora to attend a "Chhathi" ceremony (a traditional ritual held on the sixth day after a child's birth) at the residence of Neelkanth Sahu.
While returning from the ceremony, their vehicle collided head-on with a trailer truck (registration number JH 05 DP 7584) near Saragaon, leading to a horrific crash that claimed 13 lives on the spot. The deceased include nine women, two girls, one boy, and a six-month-old infant. Several others sustained serious injuries.
District Collector Gaurav Singh confirmed the tragic incident, stating, "Around midnight, we received the information. Immediately, the entire administrative team reached the spot and alerted nearby hospitals. Thirteen people have died, and around 11–12 others are injured. After providing them with primary medical treatment, we shifted them to Mekahara Hospital in Raipur for further care."
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lal Umed Singh provided further details: 'Some residents of Chatod village were travelling in a Swaraj Mazda to attend a Chhathi ceremony in Bano village. While returning late at night, the vehicle met with a tragic accident near Bangoli village.'
BJP MLA Anuj Sharma expressed deep sorrow over the incident. "This is a heartbreaking tragedy. A collision between a trailer and a Mazda vehicle in Bangoli has resulted in the death of many and injured several others. We are coordinating with the administration to ensure proper treatment and support to the victims' families."
The injured were initially taken to the Community Health Center in Kharora and later referred to Raipur Medical College (Mekahara) for advanced medical attention. Rescue operations were conducted swiftly under the supervision of senior police and medical officials.
The district administration has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the collision occurred due to high speed and possible driver negligence.

Sand mafia growing unchecked, governance failing under CM: Gehlot

1 2 3 Jaipur: Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot criticised the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led BJP govt in Rajasthan, accusing it of surrendering to the sand mafia and failing to uphold law and order in the state. Speaking on the birth anniversary of senior Congress leader Late Girija Vyas at PCC Tuesday, Gehlot said, "The sand mafia has completely taken over. Sand prices are skyrocketing, and the common man can't even afford to build a home. During our tenure, we faced challenges too, but we tried to control them. Today, it's a free-for-all." He alleged that a deep-rooted nexus now exists from the grassroots to the top, resulting in unchecked violence. "Police are being attacked, people are being run over by trucks, and anyone refusing to align with the mafia is being crushed—literally. This is not governance, this is lawlessness," he said. Gehlot further questioned chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's priorities. "What is the point of frequent tours and public visits if there is no governance on the ground? Crimes are happening everyday — rapes, robberies, thefts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo These are burning issues. Why isn't the CM acting?" Criticising administrative inertia, Gehlot noted the delays in implementing officer promotions and appointments. "Promoted officers continue to work on their old posts. IPS officers promoted to DIG are still functioning as SPs. IAS officers faced similar delays. Now that a new DGP is in place, what is stopping the govt?" He further accused the BJP govt of losing grip over public grievance redressal systems and claimed that law and order in the state was deteriorating. "The public doesn't know where to go. Mafia elements are on the rise, and complaints at the thana (police station) level are simply not being heard," he said. "The chief minister should deploy his IB discreetly to investigate whether what we are saying is baseless or not. If our concerns hold merit, he should act swiftly to fix them. If not, fine—we'll accept it was political exaggeration. But it must be verified by his own agencies," he added.

Call govt first: New law in HP cuffs cops, not officials

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh govt has enforced a new legal provision requiring police to obtain prior sanction before arresting any public servant for actions taken in the line of duty, following the President's assent to the Himachal Pradesh Police (Amendment) Act, 2024. The amendment to Section 65 of the Act now states: "No police officer shall arrest a public servant for any act done while discharging their duties except with the prior sanction of the govt." The state's Vidhan Sabha passed the amendment on Dec 20, 2024, despite strong opposition from the BJP, which argued it could shield corrupt officials from accountability. However, the state govt defended the move, claiming it would protect public servants from undue pressure and allow them to perform their duties without fear of arbitrary legal action. After passage in the assembly, the bill was sent to the President, who granted assent on May 23. The state's law department notified the amended Act officially on Monday. In addition to changes in arrest procedures, the amendment also alters recruitment protocols. Section 4 of the parent Act has been updated to state that the recruitment of non-gazetted Grade-II police officers to the state cadre will be conducted through the Police Recruitment Board, following rules framed by the state govt. The amendment marks a significant shift in the legal protections afforded to public servants in Himachal. TNN

"Is Nitish Kumar in unconscious state": Pramod Tiwari slams Bihar govt on incidents of violence, including 9 murders in 24 hours

New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): Congress leader Pramod Tiwari hit out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar questioning his government's ability to maintain law and order in Bihar, citing recent incidents of violence, including 9 murders in 24 hours, with 5 people burned to death in Purnia. He condemned the statement of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, calling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav the 'Gabbar of Bihar' and accusing him of creating an atmosphere of fear during his rule. Pramod Tiwari said, 'I condemn these statements. Moreover, 9 murders have occurred in Bihar in 24 hours out of which 5 were burned to death (in Purnia). Is Bihar inside India or not? Will the law of the country apply here? If there is Jungle Raaj anywhere then it is Bihar where maximum murders are taking place. Is Nitish Kumar in an unconscious state, or is he under the pressure of BJP? He is not the Nitish we knew. BJP and Nitish government has not right to stay in power, they have implemented the 'Rule of Jungle'' Three main accused, including a minor, have been arrested after five members of a family were allegedly burnt alive on July 6 in Titgaon village of Bihar's Purnia district, in a suspected case of witchcraft-related violence. Purnia District Magistrate Anshul Kumar visited the village following the incident. He told ANI, 'This incident happened on 6th July. At night, five people were beaten up and burned alive. Yesterday, the police and administration recovered all the bodies. The post-mortem has been done, and the last rites have been performed. A case has been registered against around 23 named accused. An FIR has also been registered against 150-200 unidentified people. The police have caught the main accused... In regard to this case, 3 people have been caught, of whom one is a minor.' Reacting to a political row triggered by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's sharp response to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's statement, Pramod Tiwari accused the BJP of using the language of Hooliganism. He further said, 'Is this the language of a Parliamentarian or BJP causes to talk like this? Will they say 'Tumko patak patak ke maarenge'. I accuse the BJP of using the language of Hooliganism.' Earlier Addressing Raj Thackeray's controversial instruction to his party workers, 'beat but don't make a video,' Dubey lashed out, saying, 'What are you doing, whose bread are you eating? You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? We have all the mines in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. What mines do you have? All semiconductor refineries are in Gujarat.' He went on to challenge those targeting Hindi-speaking individuals and said, 'If you dare to beat Hindi speakers, then beat those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu too. If you're such a 'boss', come out of Maharashtra--come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. 'Tumko patak patak ke maarenge'...' (ANI)
